6:52 Check out my video on nose breathing!
Today, let’s talk about the real cause of breathing problems like sleep apnea and snoring.
It seems like we have a lot more problems with things like crooked teeth and sleep apnea in our modern world versus ancient times. Why is this?
Could it be a lack of chewing? Or could it be a lack of nutrition? I think it’s both.
If you have a nutritional deficiency, the structure of your bones may not fully develop. But, if you never chew, you also don’t activate the muscles around your face to make the bones structurally sound.
I believe the real cause behind breathing problems is that our mouths have become too small. If there isn’t enough space for our teeth to grow, they will be crooked. If the mouth is smaller, the airway passages will also be smaller, which will constrict a person’s breathing.
It’s crucial that kids stop consuming refined foods and start consuming foods that force them to chew more. But, as an adult, you can do things to make a change to your facial structure, which can lead to better breathing.
What you can do:
1. Breath through your nose
2. Chew your food longer
3. Consume fat-soluble vitamins
4. Stop consuming processed foods
5. Consume trace minerals

Weight has a loooooot to do with it. There are all sorts of factors at play! My sleep doctor looked inside my mouth and noted my tongue was technically too large for my mouth, which is always a lovely thing to hear, lol. The weight doesn't help, but even when I lose that, the tongue issue will still be there.

I nearly died from Covid pneumonia in January. I didn’t know at the time that I had undiagnosed sleep apnia. That was the underlying condition that put me at risk. I snored for years, but never thought it was more than just an annoyance. I would wake up multiple times at night, attributing it to a poor mattress, pillow, enlarged prostate. After my sleep study I now have a cpap machine and the difference is incredible. II sleep through the night (forced to breathe through my nose) and finally getting that restorative deep sleep. I look back and see just how much of my life was stolen due to sleep apnea. Fatigue, afternoon naps, etc. What a difference now. If you snore GET A SLEEP STUDY DONE! I can change your life.

Agree , it changed my life too I use a CPAP . Unfortunately my pulmonologist told me that they have never seen anyone actually come up CPAP so I’ll probably have to use it for life even if I lost weight the problem is still gonna be there and I drive a truck so DOT law requires me to use a CPAP and I have to turn in a compliance report that I have used it for 90 days straight to get my DOT physical every year so I can maintain my CDL but yes I would say the machine has saved my life for sure. I had so many problems before I got on it that I did not even realize also since I started using a CPAP machine I don’t have to get up multiple times in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and I don’t have acid reflux or heartburn anymore which all of that in the past was related to obstructive sleep apnea and dear Medea chief leak test I would quit breathing 72 times an hour. They did tell me if I did lose more weight that I could probably slow down the episodes per hour but if I came off the CPAP I will still be obstructive there on the breathing and that will never be fixed and the CPAP is the element thing I can use that will work because I said the opening in the back of the throat it’s small also and sometimes people are just born that way and if you gain weight it definitely adds to it but I know plenty of skinny people using a CPAP machine. I cannot sleep without it though and as a driver I must wear one to do this job or I will lose my CDL

@@privatsitazen yeah , unfortunately not everybody’s gonna have the same results but in my case it was happening in my sleep so it was doing damage to the esophagus so it was bothering me during the day. Also it’s good they have a good sleep study done and they got the pressure set correctly and I used to use just a nasal cushion but my mouth was open and the air would leak out to my mouth trying out my throat so I went to a full face cushion about 4 1/2 years ago and it made a big difference and I don’t use a humidifier most people do but I do not. But yeah sleep apnea can cause a lot of problems that’s for sure and even though the CPAP works pretty good it’s gonna vary for different people.I hope there acid reflux gets better because that’s something painful to deal with I know but luckily I have not had to deal with it for about 6 1/2 years now

I’ll do you one better - If you don’t have a deviated septum/something blocking the nasal airway then you can do one better. Take a piece of tape (doesn’t have to be big, literally like 1cm max wide if that) and put it vertically across your lips under your nose. This will hold your lips/mouth closed. This will stop sleep apnea and snoring and greatly improve one’s sleep all for the price of a thin piece of tape every night. 😊

Not used to naturally breathing in and out of nose, try a little tape to close lips together, don't panic breathe, start with a minute or so till it becomes more natural, can also sleep with it on while retraining breathing. Can vouch for this. I read James Nestor's book a year or two ago. I've had 8 teeth pulled, braces, and TMJ in the past. I'd wake up at least 2-3 times each night with dry mouth, and had to wear nasal strips to help breath. I switched 100% to nose breathing during the day, especially during exercise, and after a few weeks, my nose/airways regained their strength. I then added sleeping with a piece of tape on my lips to ensure only nose breathing. It's a world of difference. I rarely wake up anymore and have reduced my sleep needed from 9-10 hours to 7-8.

Wow! I am now realizing what I did wrong as a mom! As a child I had 4 teeth removed and then braces. Grew up on casseroles, pasta dishes and cold cereal before school every morning. Both of my parents worked so my brothers and I would also come home and eat ramen and other junk! We all had braces and dental issues. INTERESTINGLY my husband who grew up with a mom at home....No junk cereal....real breakfast and meat and potato with vegetables supper never had teeth issues! We have 8 children and realized in 2019 that we were eating all wrong with lots of allergies weight problems. We did WHOLE 30 found the allergies and several lost lots of weight. Our older 6 all need braces BUT the 2 younger whose diets were changed have straighter teeth!! At 52 years old I use a mouth guard when I sleep because of teeth grinding😢 My husband has a c pap machine but has been steadily losing weight!😊 Thank you for this information Dr. Berg! In our culture (India) we are taught to chew every bite of food 32 times! Now I understand the logic behind it. Our elders often say chew each bite of your food 32 times. This way you dont need to eat 7-8cups of veggies but can manage the chewing exercise just by chewing food enough number of times

I was hit in the face multiple times by soccer balls as a kid and it caused a deviated septum. I'm also allergic to cat, dog, and dust mites. NO amount of chewing or diet was going to magically fix my nasal passages. It wasn't until I had my adenoids removed, deviated septum straightened and upper sinuses opened that I could actually breath through my nose normally. Up to that point it felt like I was always breathing through a coffee straw. After surgery it was night and day. Beyond that, LOSING WEIGHT is was practically eliminated my snoring. Simply going from 195 to 180 was a paradigm shift in my breathing. My neck is no longer thick and my wife says I rarely snore. Telling a fat person, or someone with allergy issues that chewing and diet will change their sleep apnea is scientifically irresponsible. Aside from that, I totally agree with avoiding processed foods and the general dietary advice. It really needs to come into play on top of allergy and weight issues being dealt with, though.

    1. Got that book and read it last year. I concur with your opinion. Glad I got it. I got Nestor's book and Wim Hof's book at the same time. I read them both and learned sooo much that I wish I had learned as a teen. 2. I quit snoring _completely_ as a _side-effect_ , of all things, when I went full carnivore for 6 months. I was having digestive problems, as millions of people have, and went full carnivore as an elimination diet. ( _and then began following your KETO / IF diet at the 6 month mark, slowly introducing some vegetables one at a time, starting with cabbage._ ) After week 3 of being on the strict carnivore diet I stopped snoring. I mean at ALL. It was like someone hit a switch. ZERO snoring. My wife had been listening at me snore for 30 years and the sudden silence at night was unsettling for her. She kept checking me to see if I was breathing. It took her a week to get use to sleeping in silence. That elimination diet cured a LOT of things I did not expect, but it also completed its purpose which was a reset of my system.

Good topic. There is something called ‘Wolfe’s Law’ that simply states, bones respond to the forces placed upon them. Teeth, and the bones that support them all fall under Wolfe’s Law. Most people don’t realize that the tooth-bone connection is actually a joint of sorts. It moves and responds to exercise. This gomphosis joint needs to do work! Just like any other joint. Which brings blood supply and other nutrients to the area etc etc… great video as usual. Thank you 🙏

Agree but way too late for me, been on Keto for over a year but I've lost my molars due to lack of dental insurance and I've noticed my sleep apnea is much worse. I ate more vegetables and my blood test showed low total protein. I also lost a lot of calcium due to parathyroid tumor and hypercalcemia, allergy to nuts and shellfish, deviated septum. No carbs or sugar and I keep gaining weight and its due to poor sleep from sleep apnea.

I believe sugar and processed foods are what causes sleep apnea. I have had it most of my life but not anymore due to elimination of the both of them and I feel better at 49 then I did in my late 20's.

Please, Dr. Berg, May I put my two cents in? I am English born in food rationing post WW2 era and ignorance of value of nutrients... My Mum gave all the food to my dad because he was working. I was second child- and I believe, I had subsequently many birth defects- whatever- so much so that I wonder how I survived at all. I have suffered my entire life Unable to think exhausted, confused ... etc...I had my oral pharynx measured - braces for a second time- mandibular advancement. My oral pharynx is 8mm where normal (I’m told is 18 mm roughly) I struggle to breathe through me nose- Ok get to the point: I believe 99% of today’s problems /oral - esophageal is because babies are bottle fed. My dentist says I was bottle fed, my mother said different. But I think she may have breast fed me somewhat- but not for long. I imagine if she’s giving all the food to my dad, she’s got a toddler- she probably didn’t feed me very long- not long enough! I have spent thousands $ on dentistry & have learned subsequently... the baby sucking hard for milk strengths the dental arch- which corresponds to the lower mandibular-& consequently to the oral pharynx. My mouth is so narrow that where the tongue should rest on the upper pallet, my tongue cannot even get into the upper pallet!!! My teeth came in so bucked That I could not even close my mouth. My words could not form. I could not function. So, bottom line- I believe all this starts at birth. (Baby teeth formed in utero- adult teeth formed between birth to age 5. I am 73 now with very little teeth - spo2 drops to 72%/26 apnea’s a hour! I would love to have good salads - but how? What a mess. Please would you teach good nutrition to younger people --& BREAST FEEDING (500 advantages to breast feeding but Bottle feeding is just not worth it. - I taught breast feeding in my obstetrics etc ( still teach today if anybody interested. If you care about your baby - BREAST FEED. BREAT FEEDING STARTS IN PREGNANCY to avoid issues when baby born. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents! Correct me if you find I’m wrong in anything. Thanks for listening

I don’t know about this one. I think it goes beyond just diet. I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea at 48 and now know that I had it since I was at least 4yrs old and I have always been thin and health. I do of course believe overweight issues are to blame with most snoring and obstructive apnea but this is due to the soft palate and neck growing in size. The soft palate is a harder issue to correct and in most cases it cannot be fixed, even with surgery and weight loss. A good diet will keep most people thinner and therefore not susceptible to obstructive apnea.

Chewing is important especially for young kids and that's true. I knew a friend who's a nephew who developed issues with his gum because he never chewed enough since young; his parents pampered him too much by ensuring food is always blended or smashed so that is easy for him to eat/swallow.

My granddaughter was examined for TMJ. The doctor said basically the same thing. Processed foods, carbs and sugar causing swelling and inflammation of the nasal tissues. Lack of chewing and faces being narrower than our ancestors. With a CT scan, my granddaughter has a dislocated disc on her right side, extremely narrow airway and collapsed nasal passage. We have not been presented with a treatment plan yet. Working with her orthodontist, primary care physician and TMJ specialist but I expect ENT to also be involved at some point.

If your granddaughter is very flexible please ask the doctors to see if she has EDS. My daughter had TMJ too but it was caught by the dentist who referred her to a doctor who officially diagnosed EDS. EDS is a genetic disease and the EDS specialist told her, no sugar. No refined foods that is the best way to manage it. Basically what Dr. Berg has been saying for years.

Please consider the barbaric surgery, I’m not knocking DrBerg, he’s great but it’s an uphill battle with all the stresses that combine in the processes of CPAP devices. It’s much simpler to have a day of pain as opposed to a life time of chronic illness. )Not to mention a loud device)Oh yea I’m 60 Y. O. Male and feel like I’m in my 20’s. Lovely recommendations for nose breathing. One place we forget to do this is in the middle of sentences when we gasp for air. Perhaps we can learn to block the mouth and let the air come in through our nose and then continue the sentence... ;-)
