Little known fact. Black retrievers came first, golden retrievers started showing up in litters and people started breeding them and they became more and more popular. I had a flat coat retriever mix she was mostly black with white front paws with black polka dots

The best dog I ever had was a flat-coated retriever who looked just like this. He was beautiful and had the best temperament of any dog I've ever known. He died in my arms after a fight with cancer. He was 10, and I was 21. He was my dog through middle school, high school, and college. Now, over 20 years later, I still miss him more than any other dog.

Sorry to hear about that. My Flat-coat ran into complications at the age of 9. Best dog ever. Unfortunately they die young for some reason. Full of energy until the end.

I always enjoy watching your videos, they bring back so many memories. My mom ran her own dog grooming business for over 30 years, from 1970 until the beginning of the 2000s. It wasn't a huge business but she had clients that stayed with her through multiple dogs from the beginning until her retirement. It was hard work and I always thought she never charged enough, but she loved her dogs and what she did. She's gone now, I miss you mom.

Tbh i thought it was actually a black golden retriever. But they just bred a golden retriever with a black lab lol. So it's not a purebred, just a mix. I don't see how that's rare.

Black labs or anything mixed with it are great dogs, I had black lab/German Shepard mix, sweetest dog ever.

My sweet Jasmine was a Black Lab/Golden Mix. She lived to 15 and was still getting in and out of my truck. She traveled cross country and also went to work with me, while logging and remodeling homes. Jasmine was incredibly smart and made friends all over. She would visit neighbors and their dogs. When I apologized for her roaming (I lived on a dirt road), the neighbors insisted she wasn’t bothering them and said she made their dog’s day. She passed in 2021 followed by her Springer Spaniel sister in 2022 who lived to twelve. I am dogless at the moment due to my current job, but hope to rescue a pair of dogs when I’m able again. She was the best/sweetest dog I ever had.

By far the best dogs! I had a Goldie a few years ago. He passed away in the age of 12. he was my best friend.

Goldies are bred from Irish Setters, Water Spaniels and Labrador Retrievers.

@@Quandussy Not really. Labs and goldens share a lot of the same genetic health problems. Simply mixing a lab with health issues and a golden with health issues won’t produce a dog which is magically healthier than the parents. True health improvements only come from diligent and ethical health testing and breeding, or from when you have true mutts of numerous breeds (aka hybrid vigour) or with the cruel benefit of survival of the fittest, as is the case with villager dogs. Not crosses.

If either mom or dad has all dominant genes, the puppy will take up their traits and resemblance. If one of the parents has all recessive genes, the likelihood of the puppy resembling either parent is 50/50

I think that is an oversimplification of this. There are multiple genes controlling coat colors in labs and I imagine there is for coat length as well. I’ve seen goldadors with long fur, short fur without feathering, and everything in between. The latter of your statements is only true if the opposite parent is heterozygous. The black color from the lab would be dominant in this case but I don’t have any idea how the coat length gene(s) work.

@@laurenwallace8204 The long coat is caused by a recessive genetic mutation in the FGF5 gene. Because it is a recessive mutation, a dog must have two copies of the recessive long-hair allele (l/l) to express that gene and cause the dog to have long hair.

We have one and also breed them. The longer coats are better achieved with an f1b breeding but aren't as uncommon as you think.

One of our girls carries for long coat so when bred back to a golden they're more likely to produce longer coats. Hopefully that makes sense. I just woke up lol

I knew a female golden lab mix who was black. My goodness was she sweet. She loved it when you held her paw almost as much as she loved belly rubs

he behaved so well

He looks so much like my 10 year old dog Jett that passed away unexpectedly a week ago today. We just got his ashes and paw print back today. We adopted him so we weren’t sure on his breed but he looked like a long-haired black lab. This video brought tears to my eyes. I miss that sweet boy so so much!

I grew up with a flat coat, Galaxy, and she was beautiful but obnoxious. 😅 Smart as the dickens, though, and was a good mom to her puppies.

Pls feel free to make this an “Extended ASMR” or something like that version. I could watch this good boy get clean for a lot longer.

I loved both the dog, because he is a precious bean, and the maintenance shown in the video :) it just goes to show how professional you handle people’s pets, which often times mean more than countless possessions.

We ordered a set of nail clippers from your Amazon store last week (hopefully you got credit for it) and they are the best nail cutters we have ever used! Our blue heeler/border collie mix absolutely hates the groomer and the last time I was worried that he was going to be fired as a client (not aggressive, just really nervous and VERY vocal), so we are working on getting him better with tools around him and being more comfortable with being groomed. dog groomer here, i can assure you he wouldn’t be fired for being nervous and vocal! we deal with that a lot. we only really fire dogs when it becomes too dangerous for either the dog or groomer, which only really happens if they’re aggressive or thrash violently and risk choking themselves on the grooming loop. that said, taking the extra steps to help your dog be more comfortable with the process is always a good idea and is very appreciated! best of luck to you and your pup ❤️

@@gracemarcucci3459 They didn't really elaborate on what he did this last visit, but I have a feeling he tried to unalive himself by jumping. He also has this cry/scream that can be very very annoying and sounds like you're killing him, but you're not even touching him. He does it on walks while my kids are too far ahead and I'm not going fast enough to catch up. He got kicked out of a basic training group class because he was screaming and it was freaking out the other dogs. We just tell people he's socially awkward, that's why he fits in so well with our family. Lol

Wow I didn’t know they were rare, my lab always went and got knocked up from the towns golden retriever, she mainly popped out black ones like him, her name was Teddy Bear too! Rest In Peace Teddy 4/29/17

We had a beautiful big 80 pound boy who looked like a FCR, but he was Australian Shepherd/weimaraner mix. He was smart, gentle, protective, my best & constant companion for most of his 14.5 years. You are right. Big, floofy dogs are awesome.

That's what my dog looked like! She was also a Black Lab and Retriever mix. She passed away while I was away at college and the heartbreak was so intense I never had another dog. I miss her so much. My girl, Taco, looks like a miniature version of Teddy Bear. I think she's a flat coated/cocker spaniel mix and the problem both we and the professional groomer have with her is she is likely to decide that she will be taking a nap during her bath or while we dry her and it takes an act of God to get her to stand up for a few minutes....as soon as we finish she is up and refuses to sit for hours

@@irener.3849 I'll never forget e time I scolded an American Cocker Spaniel puppy for his mischief. I looked into his eyes sternly as I scolded him. He turned his head away. I steadied his head such that he couldn't turn away from my face. He was facing me but his eyes slanted to the side. I scolded him for a few more seconds before letting him off. Then I quickly went away to burst into laughter. Oh my! So funny n so super adorable 🤣😂

O my gosh! I used the quote that you said in the beginning as a part of one of my reports on why dogs are the best! It truly spoke to me because dogs really do speak and they are amazing animal we do not deserve them.

She was a calm girl.

@@mcnoneya That's because your dog was a MIX and not a pure bred Flatcoated Retriever! I've met a LOT of Flatcoated Retrievers in my life and they were far from calm! They were very eager to do everything with their owners.

I am so impressed when I watch you trim those black nails. My one year old Lab is so afraid of getting his nails done. I was never going to be that dog mom with a dog that hated his nails trimmed, but here I am!

He looks like Smokey, my Lab/Chow mix he passed away two years ago at the age of 17. I groomed him myself and he had beautiful coat. However, he hated the noise of the hair dryer.

I think he had a problem with all of his hair sticking to his tongue, not particularly the blow dryer. He is amazing

Years ago I helped raise a puppy that had a "black golden retriever" mom and a shepherd dad. All the pups looked like yellow Labs, although some were chunkier and some slender. Fun fact: the mom dog's owners were Abbie Hoffman's ex-wife and kids.

I had a dog of this exact breed and she was the best family dog we could have ever asked for.

Labs and golden retrievers are both such wonderful loving dogs. A mix of the 2 must be the absolute perfect family dog!

Such heartwarmers!

Every weekend in the summer i head up to the lake to see my grandparents to have fun, their neighbors are also relatives and they have this exact dog but he is 6 years old and has the biggest snout ever, not long, big. His name is kato and i am good friends with him, he may be loyal to my auntie but he still jumps up and gives me a big wet kiss in the face when i come to the lake. He is an angel inside a dog and i cant imagine a world without him, i would literally give my life to save his because dogs are superior to humans. If you think pets are not family members then why even bother getting one.

I have a black lab/golden retriever mix, and he is the cutest. Its so cool when we take him out how many people compliment him

Now here's one aptly named dog; anyone else who just wanna cuddle and hug him? So sweet and well-behaved, despite the paw throws.^^

Thank you for sharing the handsome Teddy! We had a "Black Golden Retriever". Her parents were a Golden Retriever and a black Lab. They were both registered, but it was NOT a planned litter according to the owner. Her name was Mij and she had a gorgeous coat like Teddy 😊. When we lived in Colorado people assumed that she was a Flat-coated Retriever because there were some in the area, also beautiful dogs. We were fortunate enough to have her with us for 15 happy, healthy years.

@@janareeves7482 Some breeds of dogs, such as Labradors, always have a short-haired coat. Other breeds of dogs, such as Poodles, always have long hair. Still other breeds can have either type of coat, such as the Dachshund. The long coat is caused by a recessive genetic mutation in the FGF5 gene. Because it is a recessive mutation, a dog must have two copies of the recessive long-hair allele (l/l) to express that gene and cause the dog to have long hair. A dog that has short hair could have one or two copies of the short-hair allele (LL or Ll) to have the short-hair phenotype. Thus, it is possible for two short-haired dogs (if they are both carriers of the long-haired allele) to have a litter of both long-haired and short-haired pups. This may be of a concern for breeds in which long-hair does not fit the breed standard.
