A Newfie came up to us at a restaurant when we were getting food after a funeral. My grandfather had died. That dog walked right up to my mom and put his head in her lap. It was my mom’s dad that had died. I swear, that dog KNEW that my mom was sad and sought her out. The owner apologized but my mom begged the owner to let the dog stay for a bit. That good boi sat with my mom for about fifteen minutes, and it meant the world to her and to us. It was like grandpa sent that dog to keep her company after he was gone.

I come from a country where they don't exist (small African island) so my first time seeing a Newf was as a university student in York. A man was walking his three black Newfoundland dogs. Within a few minutes he had attracted a small crowd and when he paused for a toilet break the dogs were greeted by what seemed like half the population of the city centre lol. The dogs just sat there peacefully while little kids clambered over them. I fell in love with the breed that day.

When I was in the Air Force, there was a family two doors up from me that had a jet-black Newfie....Gandalf. My wife and I worried a little about that huge dog around our two kids....until I watched them play out back. Gandalf NEVER even growled when all the kids rode "horseyback" on him, sometimes three at time....and the dog was always....and I mean always within 20 feet of them, watching over them. If my wife ever asked me who was watching the kids, I'd just say, "Gandalf"....and she'd be happy. Such fabulous dogs.

Ah Jim, discovering the magic of a baby-sitting Newfie is heart warming. Our black boy - Titan - was born on the same day as our neighbour's daughter and they grew up together, would sleep together in the dog's bed and were so much part of each other's lives that the little girl thought and acted like him, even sitting up for a biscuit She learned to walk holding onto his ruff, up and down the hallway until she grew tired and she would then push him down and go to sleep with her head on his chest and his foreleg protecting her. If only they could talk!

My grandparents had a dog that had to be part Newfoundland, and even if he wasn't, he had the looks and the personality of one. He was the family guardian and the best hiking partner, my childhood was defined by him. He passed away in 2013, and even though we know all the stories my grandparents still tell about him, we listen to them fondly and remember Koda Bear.

I love family stories that are told again and again. It's so comforting. When my husband and I were first married, he didn't understand this tradition. He said to me..."why does your family tell the same stories? They already told me that story twice." I was a little taken aback. His family doesn't do this and so he didn't get it. After having been married over 22+ years, he no longer says, "yes...You've already told me that story," when I reminisce. He politely listens, but I still don't think he enjoys it like my family and I do. How do you explain to someone that we like to hear these stories more than once? I thought all humans did this and enjoyed it, but apparently not.

Our Newf actually woofed a fair amount. Pretty much anytime anyone came to the door - friend or foe. Some folks found her intimidating but we knew she just wanted to ask them for pets. 😜 Absolutely a fabulous family dog. Ours considered all of us kids her puppies. She looked after us and loved on us daily. She loved to clean our feet. Someone was assigned to brush her every day. It was a never ending task. They are (were?) quite prone to hip dysplasia. Gotta use reputable breeders.

A family friend breeds and shows Newfs, although she paused for over a decade when there was evidence of heart troubles in her bloodlines. She recently started fresh with dogs from Italy. Anyway it used to be fall tradition to drive down to her lakeside home and socialize the Newf puppies. 10-15 bowling balls of enthusiasm. And once they were tuckered out and put to bed, we'd say hi to the grownups. There's nothing, NOTHING, like being next to a lake with 11 adult Newfoundlands (she only had one litter per year but showed many dogs). The tails! The love! The drool! I always picture Newfs in a big herd on a sunny autumn afternoon.

Other than two heavily-monitored times, my mother never let me get close to the dog. I had assumed it was because she thought the dog was dangerous, but no -- that big Newf didn't have a mean bone in her body. I just wasn't allowed near her out of fear that she'd knock me over with her sheer size. I get the worry, but come on, the most activity I ever saw the dog do was lazily, half-assedly push the bowling ball with her nose and then watch it as it rolled away.

A very neglected boy, always filthy, his water was almost always filled with bugs and he would be outside all winter and summer. And in upstate NY that means -20 winter and 100+ at the two extremes, might’ve frozen to death if he wasn’t a Newfie. But despite those conditions he was the sweetest boy and would Wag his tail at any kid that would ride their bike over to visit him and he’d greet everyone with kisses. Wish I knew about reporting animal abuse but I didn’t so the best I did for him was bring him treatos. I was without a dog for a few months after my black lab died, and I noticed a few strange things about it. My biggest realization was that I relied on my dog to "clean up" when I dropped some food while cooking. I accidentally dropped a few strands of spaghetti and was surprised that I had to pick them up rather than having my food-loving lab come running in to Hoover them up. I also realized that I had been giving my sandwich crust ends to my dog, and now I had to actually eat them, lol. Dogs are such awesome best friends. Who else would happily eat your bread crusts for you?

Newfoundland dogs saved most of the people off the isolated coast of Newfoundland by carrying ropes out to stranded ships on the Newfoundland coast , these ropes were were then attached to larger ropes which were hauled to the ship from shore so that bosun chairs could be attached and sailors lives could be saved . In most cases the dogs life was sacrificed to the North Atlantic . These dogs are memorialised on a cairn in the capital of Newfoundland. It states the dogs name and the number of souls they saved.. the Labrador and the Newfoundland dogs were probably brought to Newfoundland in one form or another by the Vikings.they were both good sea dogs, especially on a Viking ship.

Aaahhh! I love newfies! And I love Pongo! Fun fact: in James Barrie's _Peter Pan,_ Nana was a landseer newfoundland. It was Disney that made her a St. Bernard for some reason.

St. Bernards are probably /much/ easier to find. I visited NF some years back and asked about seeing Newfoundland dogs. There was one at St. John's on the east coast for the tourist boats, he was busy. There was one who lived up in the north by L'Anse aux Meadows, but when we got there they said she was visiting the one in St. John's! As there's not much fishing there anymore, there are many more Newfs in the U.S. than in NF. The one I knew, he had visited a lot when a "puppy", that is less than 80 lbs or so.... I saw him a couple of years later, and on recognizing me he ran over then submissively flopped onto his back for a tummy scratch, all 150 lbs of him! 😍 Fantastic dog, taken by cancer at age 9.

@@AlbertaGeek ooops, 🤭 I don't know the various versions, thought the reference was to one of the live actor Pan versions. There may well be dogs of this breed that have lasted 17 y, like some are claiming, I find it hard to believe. In any case their shorter lives are indeed unfortunate.

@@pault151 Oh, apart from the 1954 Broadway stage production starring Mary Martin (mother of Larry Hagman of _I Dream of Jeannie_ and _Dallas_ fame), I didn't know there were live versions. Yeah, their shorter lifespan is tragic. I guess that's why they call the larger dogs the "heartbreak breeds" - because they're taken from us so earlier. Welp, all we can do is try to give them as much love as they effortlessly give us.

The neighbours had a wonderful Newfoundlander when I was a kid who would make daily rounds in the neighborhood. He would return at the end of his day with a paper bag of treats that different neighbours would add to as he would stop at their houses. Ours was his last stop before going home. We would give him his treats and we kids would love him up and he would head home. I’ve loved this bread above most since then although I have had other dogs as my own and loved them dearly I always remember him with so much love.

I absolutely adore this breed, every one I've met has been just the biggest sweetheart. In my Animal Care college a lot of tutors would occasionally bring their dogs in (dog walking was part of the course), and one time a tutor brought in her 4 year old Newfie. He was the sweetest boy in the world, spent the whole class just laying sprawled out across the floor, happy to anyone who stood up, wagged his tail and asked for pets. Incredibly sad that he passed away shortly after around 5 years old to intestine problems which are somewhat common with the breed

The Newfoundland also happened to be the size of a retriever originally. It originated from the St Johns dog which gave rise to ALL retriever (golden, chesapeake, curly, labrador) dogs. It was fools that added mastiff to the breed that resulted in the overweight does nothing breed of today.

There was a Newfoundland in my apartment complex in Kansas City. Very friendly/gentile dog but very protective it its own way. One day when I was getting my mail, the owner's 6 year old came in to get their mail. The while time, the dog placed itself between me and the kid. Never barked/growled and allowed itself to be petted.
