Years ago I knew someone who had two of them. One died at 11 years old and his brother was sooo heartbroken, he stopped eating. Only after getting him an other companion did he start eating again. It was quite a long road for the owner. At 13 years old, the owner wanted to breed him with his new female companion. And they hat 11 puppies at once! They where soooo cute but gigantic. Bevor this dogs I was kind of afraid of dogs. But not since. They are really loveable. He was still alive after I moved out. He was 15 by then.

Getting a sniff down by 2 of these guys is a unique experience to be sure. After they got used to me all I had to worry about was drowning in drool. Loved those dogs. 🙂🙂🙂

I’m so glad to hear about how you make sure your big guys don’t overheat. My sister had a dog (RIP Bear) years ago, he was a big boy. Mixed breed but double coated. She took him to a new groomer when she moved, and this lady left our poor Bear in a drying cage for HOURS in the middle of summer. She said she forgot about him. When my sister came to pick him up the groomer was surprised and then panicked. She ran to the drying cage and Bear was almost to the point of unconsciousness. He was rushed to the vet with heat exhaustion and thankfully he recovered. The groomer did pay his vet bill and was very upset and remorseful but it really didn’t help the situation much. He lived many years after that but they never trusted another groomer and got the de shedding supplies and just did it themselves after that.

I’m not sure about sharing this, but what the heck: it’s KZread, y’know! As a vet tech you’ve probably experienced many different breeds and mixes, so do you agree with me that larger breeds (Great Danes, Bernese Mtn. Dogs, etc.) are generally just better behaved than the small/toy/pocket ones? I’ve got a theory about this: so much of dog aggression/misbehavior is fear-driven, and the big breeds don’t see a need to assert their alpha status nor be afraid that others will attack them. The little ones: coke-addled, yapping nut jobs!

@@DeeEllEff Please don't badmouth small dogs, it just makes it okay for people to devalue their lives and abuse them. People don't like it when pitties and rotties are generalized, please don't make it sound like small dogs are always bad. They are not all the same, any more than any other group of dogs. Those of us who have small dogs love them just as much as you guys love the big dogs. Personally, it love all dogs but it breaks my heart when people talk about little dogs like they're worthless little demons and that's not true. Yes, they bark but so do big dogs. Yes they bite if you assume it's okay to just reach over and pet them, so do big dogs and they can reach your face, I have the scars to prove it but it was my fault, not the dog's and for the record, it was a husky and I misread her body language. Also not the point. It's true, little dogs probably get away with more, oh who am I kidding, my dogs are spoiled but that doesn't mean they're allowed to run around terrorizing the neighborhood. (one weighs six pounds and has one tooth so you can visualize how scary that would be). I understand people don't have to like them but please don't label them like that, they are still dogs and they are loved and our hearts still shatter when they pass away. I mean no offense, it just really upsets me, the same way it does for people who own any breed that is stereotyped.

Minor correction on the mix: it was not a Newfoundland Dog, but a Landseer, which also originates in Newfoundland, is slightly larger and white with large black spots. I owned a beautiful Leonberger male once and he only lived to be 7.5 years old. Died of bone cancer. His parents both exceeded the 10 year benchmark. Anyway, Leonbergers have the most pleasant disposition, are absolutely great with kids and other animals. They are too lazy to hunt, or even to fetch ;o) and they love to swim. I couldn't keep him out of the water, no matter what the temperatures. It could be 20 below freezing and he'd go for a swim, playing jingle bells with the icicles in his fur on the way home. In conclusion, I couldn't think of a more recommendable companion.

I just had a thought: THIS kind of channel is really what the Internet should be about. I get to learn at least an intro to breeds I've never known about, as well as what it takes to groom and care for them. In a quality format, personable commentary, good videography. Not trying to throw out empty flattery. With all the unmitigated CRAP sloshing around in the "sewer" of the Internet, I've come to appreciate your videos. Thanks much.

The breeder put my Norwegian Elkhound, a retired show champion, on a grooming table to blow her coat out with a master blaster. There was a blizzard of undercoat so thick you couldn't see from the barn to the house.

This breed of dog is also use as a service dog! I once knew a lady who has huge back problems and couldn’t support herself. These dogs helped her travel around and they were extremely professional, calm, and protective of her.

Leos actually make better Service Animals then therapy dogs, IMHO. My Great Pyrennes would actually be perfect as Therapy dogs as they want everyone to pet them, and don't dare stop, whereas my Leos are generally more aloof with strangers.

Max's mouth needed netting, too. I'd highly suggest she get a netted cap like those used for ladies to keep their short hair styles in place at bed. For a dog of this huge size, it would lightly be placed on his muzzle to stop all that flying fuzz from going in the mouth. Beauty Hair Supply stores and well-stocked drug stores, even Walmart, sell loose, netted hair caps. omg! I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Uncomfortable for the dog to breathe in and have in his mouth and unsafe. I hope he was given water & rest throughout those 4 hours.

Many years ago during a summer holiday in France, I befriended some kids at the camping place who had a leonberger. This dog was the BIGGEST fan of all the cuddles he could get! He was so fluffy, soft and sweet. He would lean against you for hugs. One day the kids and their parents were going on a little trip where they couldn't bring the dog with them, so they asked us if we could watch over him. It was the best day ever. We would lay down in the shadow together, napping during the day. Whenever I see a leonberger, my heart skips a beat because they make me so happy. They're the best.
