In the UK the record biggest mastiff was about the same size. He lived in a local pub. He used to carry the publican’s daughter around in her baby rocker because he was so proud of her. She learned to walk holding his ears. RIP Archie, mastiffs are wonderful ambassadors for dogs. Gentle, handsome, and utterly daft, a joy forever.

I was largely raised by my grandparents, and my Pops was a firefighter in SF. He had as his hunting dog, what else? A dalmation named Spot. That dog...apparently I leanred to walk holding onto his back--he would take a step, wait for me to take some steps, then he would step. They have pictures of this in front of the house. We also have a picture of me sitting in my DOLL basinette at about 2yo and Spotty trying to push me in that. That dog--it was like when my mom first brought me in the house, my Pops looked at Spotty and said, "see this? We give our lives for this baby." And Spot thought it was a new hunting command. I remember that my Gran couldn't rock me to sleep unless Spotty was laying in the room, and I remember him sleeping next to my bed when I was no more than 3yo. He was SUCH a great dog. He lived an extremely long life for a Dalmation--the literal perfect dog life. Summers in the mountains 75mi off grid; hunting and hiking and fishing and foraging berries. But he got to curl up next to a fire in winter and just snooze. I will stop telling my life story to strangers now. Apologies. The way you described that pub mastiff I could just see him in my head--and I had to share. I hadn't thought of that picture in years.

It's insane how gentle the massive breeds are. During finals week, the University I work at hosts "study dogs" in the library for people to interact with to help them cope with the stress of final exams. A common guest is Silver; a _massive_ Alaskan malamute. He's larger than quite a few students and stands taller than a mastiff that attended a few years ago. He's basically a body pillow.

Even though it made her job harder, meant it would take longer, and made her work in less than comfortable positions. That's one reason why I love this channel. It is literally all about the animal's comfort and you don't see that with some other channels. Another reason why I would pay any amount of money she asked for if she groomed my animal. What a stunner! As a baby, many moons, my parents had Bonnie, a Bull Mastiff. She was a lightweight by comparison, a mere 160lbs! She was credited with teaching me to walk. Laying on my blanket in the garden, as I was crawling, trying to stand, she would wander over, nudge me with her head, I would grab for someth No, ear, jowls... she would then raise me up and slowly move forward and we were off! My father, an RSM in the army, wept when he first saw that! 😊

My daughter and her ex got an English Mastiff in 2012, about a month before my grandson was born. They were raised together. Annabelle was such a gentle giant - more like a rug than a dog. She was an anomaly in that she had long hair, even tho she was a purebred. She just passed away at the age of 10.5 a couple of weeks ago. We all miss her. She weighed about 125 and I thought that was huge. I can't imagine 200 lbs!

We had several mastiffs on my parent's acreage. One dog named Sugar was born out there and also had a non-standard coat. Her's wasn't full-body though, it was mostly just shaggy around her shoulders and made her look like a fancy lady wearing a fur shawl XD Also had a non-standard muddy mask, and about half of her toes were non-standard white, and her ears were bigger than normal, but the fact that she didn't get picked for a new home like her littermates meant that we got to keep Sugar for a wonderful (non-standard) 13 years ^^ One of the best childhood dogs

Mastiffs are incredibly food motivated! It often places before even sleep and recieving pets, which they adore. For food, a mastiff will do almost anything it can think of, save let someone they deem as a threat approach someone they care about. THEN the instincts override and they start growling and barking so deep and loud that it reverberates throughout the landscape. They are sweety-pies though. Even if theyre scaredy-cats, they'll put that aside to ward off danger from their family.

I did research for a few years to find a dog that fit my lifestyle, when I was four months pregnant I got an English Mastiff puppy. Hand's Down The BEST Decision I've ever made. She was soooo motherly, she tried to Mommy everything!!! She was absolutely amazing to have with my two boys she lived to be Almost 15 years old!! Which is pretty crazy for these guys, they usually only live 9 to 10 years. I didn't let her get super heavy (to try to spare her joints) and when she was growing I made sure she didn't eat too much and put a bunch of weight on growing joints. I think that gave her hips a few more years. Truly an awesome breed, amazing family dogs!! Just have a good towel handy!!! 🤤😂🤤

PSA for ear infections. Diet does play a huge role, just like Vanessa mentioned, but you can also use this product called Zymox that's available over the counter. The vet I used to work for was a rural livestock vet, so he had to have a cheap(ish), convenient solution for farmers and ranchers to treat their dog's ears, so he just stocked this stuff and handed it out. Always talk to your vet first and don't use it on perforated eardrums, but if your dog just has yeasty, itchy ears, Zymox with hydrocortisone is amazing.

Such a wonderful dog! As a veterinary nurse I love how you make it about the animal and their comfort but when it comes to an infected ear, don't clean it! When you clean the ear out it makes it difficult to collect an ear cytology sample. It's important to know what kinda infection and how bad of an infection we are dealing with to pick the best medication and ear cleaner to help it heal. It's hard to treat an ear with barely any sample.
