He was shockingly well behaved considering his past. Even when he drew the line at touching his paws, he just barked and didnt try to bite. His parents mustve put in a lot of work, they should all be proud of that progress.

Baron looks like a wise old soul deep down. A beautiful dog with a history that may be not what he wanted it to be. He actually seemed like a sweet kind misunderstood dog that was mistreated and doesn't trust for good reasons.

Very much so. It all depends on the situation. Our terrier for example wasnt great with kids. He would play with them for some time, but he didnt like to be treated as a toy and after some minutes he would try to get some distance and if that didnt work start to growl and if that wasnt enough (happened one time when i was distracted by talking to the mother of a couple of kids who were playing with him) he niped the hand of a kid that was following him around (didnt leave a mark and he instantly pulled back again). Luckily the mother was that kind of parent, who teached their kids why the dog reacted the way it did and i was more carefull in the future. @@allym2787

I'm 100% convinced that people who refer to their dogs as "fur babies" are mentally ill.

Also note that his muzzle doesn't keep his mouth shut. He is able to pant, which is important for his safety and comfort, but the muzzle still protects people in case he acts up. Caring owners, and sweet dog who has just been through a lot,

Dogs can even eat and drink with a basket muzzle on, it just blocks them from being able to get a bite on a human or animal.

​@@chrism1503please do your own research. There are a lot of muzzles that keep a dogs mouth complete closed. They are always available at a vet in different shapes and sizes for use if it is required. Take care but please don't be so ignorant or quick to fire back with an uneducated reply.

You can see that he really tries to be a good boy, his trauma just sometimes takes over. Such a good boy.

Baron was shockingly calm for a fear-reactive dog with a rough past AND is a breed that's already naturally iffy with strangers. His face and eyes were soft almost the entire time and was okay enough to continue accepting food. Speaks volumes of the owners as well as your skill. Beautiful dog ❤️

Yes! I also noticed that he did not try to remove his muzzle. All in all, he was wonderful throughout the whole groom. Even when Vanessa tried for the nails. He just gave a "crossing-a-boundary" bark. BIG kudos to *all* the humans in the video. This is how to be with dogs.

he was surprisingly chill so i don't think he's fear-reactive, she briefly talked about strangers danger and veterinary aggressivity so i would think he probably had trauma with some kinds of humans and he has issues with other animals/dogs smell packed ambients (maybe related to bite marks or to his shelter time), and since she doesn't resemble the humans he dislikes and keep her shop fairly clean after every client, he saw no reason to be aggressive, just a bit sturdled by few things (wait you touching my tail too?noo, no nails cutting), i think he enjoyed the blower taking away all his old under coat.

@@jt1364 tail brushing he was fine with after the inital brush meaning it surprised him or snagged something. the nail clipping most animals hate. my cats freak out and i do all their nails once to twice a month. he just needs more exposure to it. hes much better than alot of animals.

He’s not a problem, he’s just a little guy who needs a bit of help. Weirdly found myself feeling super proud of this goober.

i felt proud for this little sweetie too! as the owner/roommate of a 6 year old akita,, i will say they are incredibly smart adaptable dogs who need to be given the opportunity to figure things out. you can't rush or force them but when they see that you are a helping friend they absolutely work with you as best they can. good job Baron! so happy to see you're in a home that loves and respects you now!

It's refreshing to hear the owner's fully informed her about his problems and gave an instruction to not remove the muzzle. That's incredibly responsible. It puts the wellbeing of both the groomer and the dog first. That's impressive. It ensures everyone stays safe among a couple other things.

Did you watch the same video as me? The dog has a history of aggression and the owner only put the muzzle on the dog for this *very* new experience. They removed the muzzle after the grooming was over. It's not abuse to put a muzzle on a dog for a few hours, and the alternative if he bit the groomer, would almost certainly be the dog getting out fown​@@MelB868

@@WolfePaws I would assume all people present at that moment are skilled dog handlers and collectively concluded there was nothing to fear at that point. The camera person was present during the whole groom and Baron seemed fine with them. I personally understood the muzzle being taken off as a positive sign that despite Baron's known behavior towards strangers, he was comfortable enough with all people present.

Yes. Akitas are known to be fighting dogs and his ears give that away. His anxiety reaction to certain "pain or stimulus" is PTSD and it doesn't matter how much he loves you...if he feels that trigger he reverts back to his survival mechanism. I respect the owners for not giving up on him and the groomers for listening.

Yes they will. 😢 My boy’s eyes would glaze over & he’d stiffen. The triggers could come at any time. Thank you for putting words to it. PTSD is exactly what it is. I don’t think most people understand that. Dogs don’t have the capacity for “mean”. Humans do. There are no “bad” dogs. Just a lot of really bad people.

PTSD dont work like that, there are levels to it. The mania doesn't come with the first levels, mania is an absolute last resort before you go mental and try to save yourself from whatever fear you have, going mental doesn't always mean attack, flight is always a viable option unless a human is blocking your exit. Thing is - you as a human, a being of higher intelligence should be able to fairly easily identify changes in behaviour. When you notice a change, then you should change yours, as in back off - so that you don't get hurt. If you still manage to get attacked, you were being a dumbass. Don't be a dumbass.

Barron's parents are angels. To willingly adopt a dog with such a scary past is incredibly kind. To help the dog become his very best self is astounding. A world of thanks to Barron's family for giving him a life filled with love and understanding. BTW-AWESOME groom!!!

I think she alludes in the video that they were unaware to his aggressive tendencies- which honestly makes them MORE angelic that upon realizing that, they chose to stick by him rather than give him up, even when it would’ve been understandable. They promised him a forever home and delivered, even though they have this hurdle they weren’t expecting ❤️

I will say something that we did. We fostered before adopting Genuinely even if you don't want to forever foster cause that is a lot of work with each pupper. I thought it is the best for these situations, not every parent has the capacity for dealing with all dogs. And when having a pet the average person is more picky about their pet understandably so. I wouldn't want a dog whose shy as a forever pet, I just love being social with dogs too much. Also when adopting without the entire family there it is hard to know the dogs reaction to them all. One dog we had when fostered was an abuse victim. I think I reminded it of its abusers and god I have to say if there is anything that breaks your heart it is noticing that. You want to help but the dog is scared of you for nothing you did. We eventually adopted a different pupper and probably would have kept fostering if the dog wasn't dog aggressive. Ohh and that dog who was an abuse victim in case anyone wonders. Pet of a rich middleaged guy who doesn't want a family at all, so she gets spoiled a lot and is very happy.

Adopting a dog and then finding huge issues that werent communicated is hard. I give major credit to these owners for deciding to keep Baron and continue to give him a better life.

Baron did surprisingly well for his 1st grooming session. Even if he did not like having his nails clipped, he was well-behaved. He is very lucky to have a family who will give him all the love which Baron deserves.

@@angelapietras1235 Agreed. A dog is not a toy, and not a decoration, and not a temporary unconditional source of zero-maintenance affection. There is no ethically defensible reason to breed dogs.

As the owner of a dog who is INCREDIBLY aggressive towards other dogs because of a past attack when he was at the shelter, I really appreciate the love and respect this old boy is shown. Learning to love and trust after suffering is hard, but we take it one step at a time.

Thanks for caring for your boy. My auntie takes in a lot of rescues and one of her more flighty guys finally warmed up to me after over a year.

The owners who saved this pooch are actually angels. They took on a dog not knowing anything, to then find out he had an aggressive nature, to the. Being able to be groomed with a single issue. These owners should be so damn proud of themselves and baron.

So happy for Baron that he found a furever home where they understand how to handle a dog with a nasty background like his and are willing to both work with him, and be realistic about how he's going to act in stressful situations like grooming. Akitas are not always easy dogs to handle at the best of times (maybe with the exception of Kuma, who gives no fluffs) so I think you've proven today that you truly are the Dog Whisperer, Vanessa. :)

A friend of mine adopted a dog from a similar bad situation. He is very reactive out of fear, but has an absolute heart of gold underneath. They're working with him constantly and he's gradually learning that humans and other dogs can in fact be trusted. It can be a tough slow process, but I think it's well worth it, and I love seeing people give dogs like Baron the chance they deserve. I hope we get to see him again!

I have soooo much respect for Baron’s family. Far too many people would have adopted a dog like this, realised what they’d gotten themselves and returned them to the shelter. I’ve heard of far too many dogs going over that trauma several times and it just breaks them, or worse happens. Instead this family have seen the problems and have decided to work through them with him. Seeing how happy he is with them at the end and how he was for his groom I think it’s safe to say their hard work is paying off. And says even more about the type of people they are imo.

I was thinking the same thing. They adopted a breed of dog that is notoriously difficult, and on top of that, the poor pup had really bad trauma and was distrustful of humans. The fact that they were willing to take on the challenge is remarkable, and I can see by his behavior that they are doing a fantastic job. I have trememdous respect for people who adopt animals because they want to save a life, as opposed to those people who purchase a breeder dog, like they're buying a piece of furniture.

And I could never feel comfortable living with a dog who wasn't 100% trustworthy. Crazy cats, okay. But crazy dogs can kill. I have however the utmost respect and admiration for people like this dog's owner who are both willing and capable of working miracles with damaged dogs. And Vanessa too is a real miracle worker!

Makes me so happy to see Baron being given more chances at a happy life - those ears and his aggression tell a sad story

Yes, they most certainly do, but look at the changes in his eyes and him offering her his paw. He has a chance of a good life and is willing to give humans a second chance. These humans are giving him a second chance. ❤

Oh! He did SO well!! What a sweetheart for trying!! The way he offered you his paw and that sweet lick at the end. He really made the leap of trust with you!

This one actually brought tears to my eyes, which doesn't happen often. He bears the marks of his tragic past life bravely, and seeing him so calm while you groomed him was very heartwarming. Thanks a lot for this one.

My deepest respect and love for pet parents who understand that to protect people and other dogs a muzzle is necessary. This also protects your aggressive dog from being put down because of aggressive behavior.❤❤❤

Thanks for featuring muzzled up pups! My dog is also quite reactive with other dogs and grooming, in addition to being wary of strangers. Having the muzzle allows us to have peace of mind knowing trust can be established without worrying about the safety of another handler or my dog. Not all dogs get the chance to be socialized properly or desensitized to grooming - so thanks for showing your followers they can do just fine given patience and positive reinforcement.

I love how the channel has slowly shifted into dealing a lot with 'problematic' animals. It's awesome to see Vanessa's expertise in reading dogs' body language and her calm and assured demeanour pay off every time. That change in the dogs' behaviour as they start trusting her is so amazing to watch! Thank you so much for your hard work, Vanessa 🐶

Baron gave me big soldier-vibes. Besides for his visible scars, from the outside you cant really tell what kind of life he had gone through and how he still struggles with behavioral issues from a worse time in his life. Glad this cute veteran found a family who accepted him as he is!

This made me cry. Baron has obviously been through a lot. So happy he found his people and that they are willing to work within his limits. Taking the time to earn his trust and respecting his boundaries produced a great outcome.

His Mom and Dad are very good with him and you can tell he loves them too, I am so glad he was rescued. You are so wonderful with difficult dogs and breeds.

Shout out to Baron’s forever people - thank you for taking him and then keeping him when you learned of his aggression “problems”. Who knows what that poor dog has suffered and it is a miracle he finally found humans to love him.

YES! So many dogs with these kinds of issues are surrendered back to shelters- and I don't entirely want to blame those owners for that either, it's a ton of work to deal with a dog with such issues and not everyone is equipped for it if you weren't expecting it, especially people who don't have a lot of experience with dogs or people who have children or other pets who's safety they have to consider. But it just makes me so happy when someone is able and willing to put in the time and effort to work with a dog like this, even if it's hard.

It makes me so damn happy to see him without a muzzle at the end, showing his love and affection!

Oh gosh, there's something about slowly earning the trust of a big, fearful dog that just gets me. I found myself good boy-ing along with you 🥺

You did so well with him, he was very lucky he had his first groom with you, you made him so relaxed. And wasn't it sweet to watch him react to the love hugs and attention from his pet parents, they clearly adore him.

There's something so sad and hopeful about Baron's eyes when Vanessa petted him at 2:17 🥺 Whatever his past is, Baron deserves all the treats and good petting in world.

I cried too when Baron saw his parents at the end of the groom. Also, during Baron's bath, I was very moved watching his eyes accept Vanessa's love and patience. Almost like a relief. Thank you for the excellent commentary during the groom and thank you for sharing!

It's called being in touch with your emotions and being moved by a beautiful moment, especially considering all the evil in this world.

As an owner of 2 American akitas seeing this dog like this hurts. Thank goodness there’s good folks that took him in.

This was just all around wholesome. His reunion with his people at the end was heart-melting! Just such joy to see them and his pride in having been a good dog was so apparent! ❤❤❤

He’s like an old wounded soldier, full of trauma and a million stories. I feel for him ❤

Absolutely. You can see how well the discipline and love have come through; he's responsive, and trusting, and approached correctly. He still has some obvious hang-ups, like the nails, but hey, exercise will help mitigate that.

Not gonna lie, when he started offering his paw, i got teary eyed. There are no "bad" dogs, just dogs that have been through stuff & reacting in the only ways they know how. I am so glad that the owners found Vanessa, because she is the best person to help Baron (even though he was an absolute sweetheart) ❤

Of course there can be bad dogs, but yes most of it is down to owners. To say dogs are inherently all good, I'd like saying all bad humans are the fault of their parents.

Oh there’s def bad dogs, just like there are bad ppl. Just most dogs aren’t bad naturally, just like most ppl aren’t bad naturally.

I recently found your channel- watching these stories of scared dogs get groomed warms my heart. I have an Akita, Doberman greyhound mix that is super people friendly but has small dog aggression and these videos allow me to see he is still amazing even if he has behavior issues.

You are so impressive. I love your calm voice & way you find a connection with each dog!❤

There's so much respect being shown from each side of the groom! And I for one am so happy we got to see his handsome face at the end

Seeing that ending, I'm doubly glad that Baron has good people around him! Poor guy has excellent people to trust at home and when getting pampered.

It’s so awesome seeing pet parents try to heal a reactive / aggressive dog. It’s incredibly tough. What an amazing groomer. She handled that perfectly. Taking on such a dog (like mine) is not for the faint of heart but the patience it requires - that’s the commodity that’s precious. Baron was such a good boy!

I was laughing after Baron's grooming session when he pretty much wrecked your yard hahaha... Appreciate that despite the obvious issue with the dog, you were calm and did what you could as a professional.

I've worked with hundreds of dogs that suffer from severe behavioral issues. You made huge strides with him regarding trust. His seemingly calm temperament is the scariest kind (a specific trait of Akitas) where unless you can "read" the dog correctly, everything can go bad in seconds. You continue to amaze me on just how well you handle these dogs. I wish you were closer. I love to see what you could do for my Rhodesian Ridgeback. We think he was used as a bait dog. He has a hair trigger with strangers but is bonded to me like glue. Thank you for the work you do. It's a pleasure to see.

@@Anon_E_Muss The issue is mostly that they have different warning signs to other dogs and that their warning signs are super subtle. It's like they speaking an entirely different language. Once you get used to them and their mannerisms it's easy to be in tune with their needs, but if you're used to other dogs it's such a huge challenge. And sometimes a challenge in reverse! I've grown up with Akitas so I'm more used to their behaviors and it can make working with other dogs a little harder LOL

@@CeruleanRogue japanese dog breeds in general remind me a lot of cats with how subtle the signs are. i’m a cat person and can’t really read dogs well at all bc i’m not used to them but akitas and shibas seem much more familiar

The fact vets struggled with him and you were able to win him over is a real testament to your skills ❤

He’s a good boy with a tough past and I’m so glad he clearly has caring, understanding, patient and responsible owners.

Baron was very brave and well behaved, his owners have clearly put the effort in to help him. And put a smile on my face to watch Vanessa earn his trust.

He obviously had a bad start to life, and to see him do so well with the groom and even offer a paw was so sweet. It’s super apparent that his parents researched reactivity and his breed before bringing him in. I love to see an Akita with smart, loving, parents! They get put in the wrong hands way too often :(

You do so well to create a good environment for fearful dogs. I never fault people for muzzling a dog, especially a larger dog with issues like he has. Good job turning a stressful situation into such a positive interaction.

I love the patience you have. I am not a groomer, but a student Vet Tech. At one appointment at an internship we had a dog that was aggressive to strange people and pets. The vet had to step out for lab work and I just sat on the ground not looking at the dog. After 30 minutes he finally came up to me and 10 minutes later we were cuddling. Patience is so important with scared animals

I have a similar story with one of my aunt’s dogs. I came by to meet the pack, and Grizzly was very afraid of me. I mostly ignored him and instead interacted with Wilson, her big rott that knew me and loved me already. After a while of playing with the old man, Grizzly sat down in my lap and pretended to discover me… he’s such a character, love the guy.

This definitely got me the feels. The owners for not giving up on him. You for building some trust and doing an amazing job. This dog had been failed by humanity and some humans are making it right. Beautiful

Behavior issues can be such a nightmare to live with. They are so challenging, having to organize your life around them a bit more than most pets. That being said, they are also incredibly rewarding, and clearly the dog still gives all the love he can to his well-deserved owners.

I am learning a lot by seeing how you are working with him, getting him comfortable with the whole process of grooming and even ensuring that he is ok with the water. Yeh it's one thing to have an aggressive dog... like a rotty or a pitbull, then you have a giant like that, baron can eat 2 pitbulls with room left for more.

A scratch board might be good for him if he can be trained to touch! My Shiba hates having his claws clipped, so for his front paws I made a sandpaper board that I’ve trained him to scratch, and it helps keep ontop of his claws :)
