    @@ernestpaul2484 Dogs don't don't like people messing with their paws. I don't know why. But they have a thing about that. Almost any dog will have an issue with it. But they don't always react as strongly as this dog. When I was kid, our dog would bite your hand for doing it, but not hard enough to do any damage. Just hard enough to tell you that you were irritating her. But she actually did let me file down her nails with a metal file one time. It worked well, but it took too long. And most dogs wouldn't sit through that. When we played with her, we would grab her front paw, and she would bite our hand. And if we did it in too predicable of a way, she would anticipate our next move and be ready for us.

    I have a degree in textile design and had Malamutes for thirty years. I saved the hair, carded it with wool because dog hair fibers are too smooth to hold together, and spun it into yarn. I wove a coat with the yarn, so I still have my dogs "around" me even though they've been gone for decades. 🌈🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🌈

    Really? I thought it looked horrible, and then she explained about it being "wooly" and I understood why the coat looked so poor. It's a shame to working dogs, esp the awesome breed that is the Mal, to breed a dog that can't deal with weather and has that high a maintenance coat. They shouldn't be bred like that any more than Frenchies and Pugs should have those heads. It shouldn't be called a Malamute, either. Good on the owners for saving this one, though, it's going to be a lifetime of work and expense just keeping the coat... but it's not like the dog asked to be bred with a terrible coat and used for meat. They're lucky it doesn't have a heart condition like a lot of meat bred dogs. 😕

Ran like the wind as soon as he could break free. Always apologetic once corralled. Grooming resulted in the piles of fur you show here. I fostered a german shepherd/ husky mix who had been shaved a few years prior...her coat was destroyed from the shaving but was trying to come back. A good diet with fresh eggs and better kibble, regular brushing, and a 4 hour professional grooming changed her coat and her life. She came out of that grooming session PRANCING. You could tell she FELT better after having her undercoat manually brushed out, and her coat was shining and gorgeous. The previous groomer shaved her because her coat was in such bad shape at that time, so I don't blame them. It was just such a shame to see the long term damage. Some TLC and continued grooming really helped a lot. But we paid a fortune for her to get back into good shape. We still have the photos the groomer sent us of her room after the session. It was insane. She earned every penny! The quality of life it afforded our foster dog was priceless. We made sure she was placed with a forever home that knew her coat needed care.

    If I may ask: does this seem to you that the owners are giving Journey's fur the necessary care? I don't have any experience with malamutes, just with a wolf spitz owned by my relatives, who took a hairbrush to his coat almost daily and did a splendid job with that. I really don't want to ask Vanessa such a thing.

  • @joycooper5656

    @joycooper5656

    10 ай бұрын

    @@irena4545 I can only assume that Journey’s owners were trying their best. As we all saw here they were willing to try different groomers until they found one that was willing to save her coat. Vanessa states very often how important doing your breed research is and I couldn’t agree more. I personally believe that they may not have been aware of this Malamute coat type (I was today years old when I heard of a Wooly Malamute, although I am familiar with the breed on a more general basis). Also Journey is clearly a very big dog with LOTS of hair and her being a rescue from a different country all together may have just made for an overwhelming situation in regards to her care (coat care or otherwise). This isn’t the type of dog I would see any groomers choosing to adopt, but Journey was a pet being saved from very difficult conditions and she deserves a good life. I don’t blame or judge her owners for the condition she was in here. I commend them for caring enough to even try so hard to get her properly taken care of. They did great and Vanessa worked a miracle.

  • @danieleckert3938

    @danieleckert3938

    10 ай бұрын

    @@joycooper5656 I curious if the groom that Journey's had here has made it so that she has a bit of a clean slate with her coat. Do the owners just need to do the daily brushing or does she need specific coat care since she had her double coat shaved. I'm most curious about the type of upkeep needed when you take care of a double coated dog who's been shaved and how that irreversible damage shows itself.

  • @joycooper5656

    @joycooper5656

    10 ай бұрын

    @@danieleckert3938 Oh gosh more replies (wasn’t expecting this, I’m flattered you all are asking me questions). I believe during the video Vanessa stated that Journey’s particular coat type isn’t standard so she doesn’t have the regular double coat of say a Malamute that would pull sleds so I can’t quite say what the damage there would be exactly. I can say that for most double coated dogs cutting into the second layer of coat would interfere with temperature regulation (staying warm in the cold and cool in the heat) as well as making the coat more difficult to work with (Vanessa has also said this as well) due to the damage from the clipper blades and the hair growing back coarser, patchy or not at all in some cases. I’ve seen this in Pomeranians quite often with the infamous “Boo Cut”. The best course of action for caring for a coat like Journey’s or a double coat in general is definitely daily brushing and combing, possibly multiple times a day so that by the time the pet goes in for their professional grooming appointment it won’t be quite so taxing for the groomer. With a dog like Journey though a tiring groom is unavoidable based on size alone 😅. I’m sure Vanessa gave the owners some coat care tips (I know I surely do). The owners can literally only try their best, but I’m sure it would take a village and maybe a couple days to brush/comb a coat like Journey’s to a tangle free state from head to tail. I personally would try to make brush days as positive an experience as possible, possibly include toys and treats and maybe include other friends/family that Journey feels safe around to help.

    8:20 This might be the perfect time to mention the man behind the camera. Vanessa should receive a Sainthood for her caring for these gentle creatures. But, we can't forget that the camera is being operated during the whole ordeal. And yes, the singing of "hold on to that feelin" (Journey song) deserved the eye roll. 💜

    Vanessa, Girl With the Dogs, Girl, you are AMAZING! Bless your kind and compassionate heart for your wonderful temperament you display while grooming these big fluff balls that have misunderstood attitudes. You are really good at what you do!!! I just wanted to tell you that you also have a very soothing voice to listen to. If you ever want a break from dog grooming, perhaps you could try reading books out loud and posting them on audible reading sites. My nephew was a newly graduated lawyer and he switched jobs. He audition for the audible book reading gig and he got the job. I’m pretty sure you would have no trouble at all doing some kind of job like that. Your voice is easily understood plus it is so relaxing to hear. Good luck with your future grooming endeavors. I will be watching your future videos!!!

    Aside from how you treat your clients, the way you speak about other groomers and don't bring them down says a lot about you as a person and it's pleasing to know that there are still nice people shining their little lights in the darkness.
