As a large breed dog owner, I can confirm that I did indeed wake up one day and decide I wanted a horse in my house. As I described it to my family when they questioned my sanity, I said, "I want people to have to do a double take when I walk him because I want them to be unsure if I'm walking a bear, a small horse, or an unreasonably large dog." I got exactly what I wanted. My family continues to question my sanity, but they love my dog.

My university had three St Bernard therapy dogs that would come in during finals week-Bea, Bobo, and Boomer. They were such sweethearts, they’d all just flop down on the floor of the library and let a gaggle of students surround them for pets and cuddles. Boomer starting coming to campus as a puppy, and even as he got fully-grown he still tried to sit on people’s laps like he was still a little puppy 😂

I had 3 Bouvier de flandres that can get from 40kg to 50kg maybe more for males and they were all like this St Bernard... giant puppys that loved to stay around, very gentle and calm. now I have one that is a mix of a Bouvier with a border collie and sometimes he still thinks he is a puppy and wants to jump on our laps.

I grew up with St. Bernards and Newfoundland’s in our home. We never had a problem with any of these dogs being mean or aggressive. You can brush them, wash them, trim their fur, cut their nails, use noisy electric shavers....as long as you’re not causing them any pain, they will be very docile. If they get annoyed with something (or someone) they almost always walk away. They’re also great with children, they are natural babysitters. They sense that children are small and fragile, so they’re gentle with them. You do have to be careful that they don’t sit on a small child, or accidentally knock them over with their tail, but otherwise it’s a perfect breed for families.

I know that this is a joke, but in all seriousness chihuahuas can naturally be very loving. Due to improper care, many chihuahuas seem monstrous. Behavior that would be unacceptable in larger dogs is tolerated in smaller dogs, and just like a child if they learn it's okay to act a certain way they might just do that.

A lot of much smaller dogs are much higher strung, jumpy, and aggressive because they’re terrified of everything. Just look at Chihuahuas. But when you’re as big as a Saint Bernard and weight 200 pounds plus, what do you have to be afraid of? You’re bigger than everybody else. The gentle giant label is so appropriate for them because it’s true.

But I have several friends who are elderly who got "bumped" in a friendly way by their big dog, and now they have fractures as a result. Great Danes, Rhodesian ridge-backs come to mind. We all know of big people who are gentle and who can be clumsy.

2:12 - I grew up on a farm and when I finally bought my own home it came with 10 acres of land. Adopting a rescue St. Bernard/German Shepard (145lbs) was the best decision of my adult life. A Saint Bernard laying around your house isn't much different than having a teenage boy laying around your house, except the Dog is way more affectionate and despite the breed's stubbornness really wants to be a good boy. My giant dog is way easier to be in the same room with than my adult son now, the dog is bigger than my son xD

@@r.j.whitaker - It would be nice if my dog could talk or negotiate. I would love those two features. Especially today, it's raining and cold and refuses to poop too close to the house. All pooping must be done far far out in the meadow with the rest of the animal poop. Giant Dog refused to negotiate and we are both soaked today.

Rumi is a doll baby. I grew up with horses, so giant breed dogs don't seem that large to me. But you must have the space for them to run and play! Have lived with 200 lb. English Mastiffs for the past 30-some years. Feel so safe with them. Thanks for such a great job, kudos for caring for his coat so beautifully.

My family used to have a St. Bernard named Adagio. Once I found out it was a word related to music and means "at a slow tempo", I loved that whomever named him knew what they were talking about, lol! It's a perfect name for the breed 😅

I'm so grateful you talked about lower eyelid inversions. One of my cats had that problem, and we tried less invasive corrective measures, but surgery became necessary. It improved his quality of life so much! Imagine having your eyelashes flipped in to irritate your eyes all day, every day. Love this sweet boy, appreciate you taking time to explain about breeds and conditions.

This is also something that a lot of brachycephalic dog owners need to be aware of. (Most brachys are "wrinkly" which pushes the skin around the face into uncomfortable positions.) As long as you have one from a decent breeder, or that's been properly looked after, they should be fine as the owner will have started treatment early. But it's not always a one and done. As they grow they might need a repeat operation or two. 😉

Don't respond to the weird guys in replies it is usually a scam aimed at older ladies, or anyone lonely enough to chat with a stranger. The biggest clue is that they address you directly, if not by name and have nothing to contribute to the comments. 99.9% of the time scammer the rest is Nice Guys™(incels). Both are NOT worth risking a conversation with. I put this here so people learn because sub comments have more scams popping up by the day.

I'm a small person, so anytime I see a massive and/or intimidating dog, I immediately want to have it. Not just for protection, but just the idea of having such a beast listen to me and love me is **chef's kiss**
