    So Gigi is my girl and we definitely don’t do as well at keeping her mat free as I would like! With a pup of her size, if she wants to sit and not let me brush that day, she’s going to do just that. But she is the sweetest girl and I adore her. Thank you for all the love for my girl, despite some mats, and a huge thank you to Vanessa for making her gorgeous. Note to future Leo owners: brush them a ton as puppies!! Even when their puppy fur doesn’t need it. If I had done that more I’m sure it would have been easier going forward, so I know for the next one some day.

    I have a comparatively tiny dog whose long-haired chihuahua grandparent gifted him with longer hair than you'd otherwise get out of a mix with mini-Pinscher and pug. I also strongly advise anyone whose got a dog with fur to reckon with to get them used to being brushed. He has almost no undercoat so his mats are all in his top coat.

    There are trainers that can get them more comfortable with brushing/grooming over time. Have you ever thought about trying that out? She does seem like a very good girl who could be trained so that daily brushing is easier over time, and most people I know with huge dogs so it in incriments throughout the week, breaking. It up into different body parts which lessens the amount of time and makes it a bit easier. Might look a bit silly until you get her used to it for the first few weeks, months, but it starts to even out and becomes easier over time! And if you can distract her with a movie (if she likes tv) or a peanut butter mat if she is food or treat motivated and you can have somebody else assist you for distraction, that world help a *lot* too!!

    For the sheer amount of matting Gigi had in her coat, you really did a phenomenal job at making it look as neat as possible. It reminds me of that Samoyed you groomed just over a year ago that was so badly matted it literally broke a pair of scissors. Although both dogs were patient through their grooms, for a dog of her size I was actually kinda stunned that she managed to stand for pretty much the entire groom. Incredible work as always!

    Their coats are like silk the undercoat is like wool getting past that is work. I use the blaster dryer weekly even when don't go in water as gets the undercoat out best less brushing which mean when bathing less hair together wet and dry. Daily brushing is definitely a must though or easily matte as they love water the smellier the better as they have webbed paws like newfies

    Since Leonbergers were bred with the express purpose of being companion dogs, not work dogs, it's relatively easy to socialise them, sadly they are not a very healthy breed though, and tend to not live very long and still accumulate high vet bills. They are one of the breeds were a healthy died does do wonders though and can reduce the vet bills quite a bit and noticably increase their average lifespan.

    I love that you highlighted the breeder matching puppies to families. I am a big believer in this as well. The breeder of our Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, doesn't have her puppy families choose their pups. Instead, SHE matches the pups to the families. And any time a situation isn't working out, there is a stipulation in our contract that we must return the dog to her specifically and not give it up to a shelter. Not that we would, but it goes to show how invested she is in the full lifecycle of every dog that comes from her kennel.

    My Leo-mix was also an escape artist. He learned how to open the slider and the storm door. I worked at home, and as I would be doing my job, suddenly I’d notice the unusual quiet. Yes, his breathing was that loud. I’d hope in my truck, and drive through my neighborhood. Usually, he came running when he heard the engine, or he would be playing with the neighborhood kids. He always looked so happy when he saw me that I couldn’t be angry. He was groomed every 4 months or so and I groomed him daily. He was the best dog ever.

  • @unterdessen8822

    @unterdessen8822

    Жыл бұрын

    There's actually a theory, that woolly mammoths were bulletproof. I've seen it mentioned in one of Aleksandr Chervyakov's articles. Not only do elephants have thick muscles and bones under thick skin, but mammoths would also have had a layer of isolating fat, that modern elephants lack, tough, stringy, matted hair all over and on top of that a layer of baked mud. It's likely that they would have rolled in mud like modern elephants, and when that dried, it formed sort of a clay armour. That's FIVE layers between a hunter and the vital organs, and each of them would have been impenetrable for primitive human stick and stone weapons. Which implies, that trapping them in swamps and naturally occurring holes in the ground, waiting for them to weaken, was really the only method to capture and kill one, aside from chasing them over a cliff with torches at night. Kudos to prehistoric humans, that they even just killed a single one of them. And you can forget about the fairytale of humans driving the world's megafauna to extinction. There were not enough humans around at that time and they didn't have the tools to slaughter masses of large animals, let alone a five-layer mammoth. The situation was similar to that in Africa in historic times: Native Africans didn't possess the weapons technology to really harm the popupations of larger animals. !Kung hunters in modern day Namibia, for example, can take down a giraffe with wooden spears, but it's an enormous effort and super dangerous, and they don't do it every day or week. The populations of big game only started to dwindle in the 19th century. At that time Europeans had already settled in Africa with their firearms for a while, but it still took a considerable leap in weapons technology to develop rifles, that were capable of taking down an elephant, rhino, hippo or buffalo. A tiny portion of humanity gained this ability not even 200 years ago. It's ridiculous to think, that this was common 10.000 years ago all over the world.

    I have always picked a puppy that picked me. BUT 50 lbs of dog food + 25 pounds on pinto beans 25 lbs of rice and neck bones or hamburger. Every month. Sometimes it is Chile ( minus the 3 alarm heat). They will let you know when it is done. Just put it on in a crock pot. The dog food is for their midnight snack. Enough for one of those Leons or two Rottweilers. Oh & having them in pairs is better for the dogs. Now that I am past 3/4 of century. My dog tag team has a combined weight of 26 pounds. One of them is 15 years old and the other is 7 years old. They are all natural. Lots of dogs live a long time and never go to the vet. Dogs in the country side live longer. Mine always had there own door to open. The ones that did not make old age. Got bit by a copperhead or rattler. Happens.

    WE had a St. Bernard named, Heidi, when I was a child in the 70s and 80s. In the spring she'd lie out in the yard and let flocks of birds help shed her! They'd land on her and pull out tufts of her shedding coat! Of course I loved to help her as well! So satisfying to loosen and esp big tuft of hair! I also had a pug (Herbie passed away Thanksgiving morning at 2am 2021) but he only shed twice a year... for 6 months at a time! I still find his fur everywhere, and I cry, smile and thank him for being the bestest boi I ever had.
