My friend had an accidental litter of Golden Retriever and Border Collie, half of the little looks like purebred goldens and the other half looks like flat coated retrievers, they have no trace of border collie, they’re gorgeous

I have a flat coated retriever/border collie mix. Very smart dog. He has so much energy. He's definitely my fur baby.

Got my pups DNA today. He’s 50% golden, 25% Doberman, 12.5 German shepherd. When we got him we thought we were getting a black Labrador. He’s absolutely beautiful n sooo happy with our boy 🥰

We raised Golden in my family for years .. I bought a flat coated retriever and was the best dog I ever owned out of 30 dogs growing up ..they are amazing but most ppl think that's what ppl think are black Golden

They are bigger 100% .. Mine got up to 101 pounds lol ..biggest Golden we had was 80 maybe 85 and that's huge

I had my dog’s DNA tested and she is 51% Golden Retriever and 49% Bloodhound. She is the blackest dog anyone who sees her has ever seen. She has a hound head, ears and neck, with a black lab sleek looking body. The hair that runs along the top of her back from neck to hip is thick and wavy. She definitely has the hound stubbornness but that balances out with the retriever sweetness!

My bullmastiff and golden retriever had puppies and all the puppies turned black. They look exactly like a golden retriever only with black coat

My in laws brown golden retriever accidentally got a hold of their German Shepard, they had an interesting 50/50 litter but two fully black dogs came out looking exactly like the golden which me n my wife kept ❤ they act just like their dad 😂

I have a female Golden Mountain Dog, which is half Golden and half Bernese mountain dog. Pure black, but looks EXACTLY like a Golden. I have been stopped so many times at the dog park, being asked if I have a super rare black Golden Retriever. I of course explain the mix. It's the closest thing you'll ever see (appearance and behavior) to a GR.

I have a mix of black flat coated retriever and golden retriever, I get stopped at the park a lot too, few people recognize sometimes that he’s a flat coated

The Labrador is my favorite retriever and my second favorite is flat coated retriever

My puppy's DNA results came back: she's 72% golden retriever, 15% labrador retriever and 13% american bulldog. Her fur is black/brown

They look so much like Goldens. Thanks so much for clarifying this. My Garrus is the most gorgeous golden colour. Am I biased? No! 😊

But- My retriever is black because his mother is a shepherd and his dad is golden retriever

My Golden retriever just gave birth to a black GR...and i think its unique...and somewhat rare to find.😁maybe its because of its crossed breed..🙄

@@goldenhearts8822 Well, I'd disagree but that's just me personally. I mean yeah of course they share similarities....they're retrievers! - but Goldies are much more boxy in their chest, as they're not that actively used in hunting anymore, while Flats are rarely seen outside of Hunting homes. At least here in Germany. Goldie's heads are also much larger and boxy, and the Flat has a longer snout. I find it hard to believe that someone could think one is the other

I had a vet list my flat as golden retriever 😂.

My understanding is that the Golden Retriever came OUT of the Flat Coated (Coat) Retriever. The latter come in black, liver, and occasionally "yellow" they call it. That happened more commonly in the early 20th Century where the "yellows" were bred out of the Flat Coat line and then mixed with something else to get the current (well, last 100 years) Golden Retriever (English or American). The yellow Flat Coat is still an anomaly but the yellow is not recognized nor registered in the Flat Coat line. However, there are some rogue breeders that will aim for the yellow Flat Coat. Even our Flat Coat breeder (we own a liver Flattie) said she could secure a yellow if we were interested; obviously the breeders all network. We also have an eight-year-old Golden (a Field Golden) along with the five-year-old liver Flat Coat. One thing about the yellow Flat Coats is they don't gray as much as Goldens when they get older and a similar age. Don't know how much of all the latter is true, but that's our story when we meet other dog owners. 🤷‍♂

Flat Coated Retrievers are NOT black Golden Retrievers. Their head shape for instance, is completely different. Goldens have the more typical retriever head. Flat Coats have a setter type head. It's not as wide as the typical Golden or Labrador retriever is, but much closer to what you would see in an Irish Setter. Yes, Flat Coats have more energy...they are also slightly smarter. Both have the same love of "their people" and will hang around you all day just because they want to be near you. However, the Flat Coat in my experience gets "bored" more easily with regards to being left alone while you work on your computer, and will find...interesting ways to force your interaction with her. That said, people tend to love and trust goldens. My wife and I refer to it as "golden privilege" Young kids will run up and hug a golden and the parents just seem to laugh it off (hint, never run up to ANY dog and just throw your arms around them. You never know what their lives might have been like resulting in a bad reaction). They also seem to be more accepted by adults. People kept more of a wary eye on our flat coat and Irish Red and White and would ask if they could pet the dog. People tend to just reach out to pet our golden. I've owned Goldens, Irish Red and White Setters, and Flat Coats. If not for my wife's allergy to the Flat Coat, we would still have one. They are the perfect family dog...except for the shedding which stops 2 times a year....for about 30 seconds, then it starts all over again. I would trust my golden to be around an infant and toddler, but I would be looking out to ensure that the kiddo was not knocked over or into something. My Flat Coat appointed herself my nieces guardian for a few months when my brother and sister-in-law were in the middle to being deployed/moving and were unable to look after an infant. My niece spent those months with me and my parents (her grandparents) and she learned to stand by holding onto my flat coat's fur and pulling herself up, and to walk by holding onto her back and tail. If she looked like she was going to topple over, my Flat Coat would quickly place herself between my niece and any object that might hurt her, so that the only thing that my niece got was a face full of fur. She was never trained to do that, she just did it. One last thing...Goldens are party animals when they are young, but eventually grow out of it. Flatcoats are even wilder party animals and never grow up, and they will clear your coffee table of any object with two swipes of their ever wagging tail. They are called the peter pan of dogs for a reason. A 10 year old dog that you would think would "know better" will just suddenly pull a prank on the family just to get their goat. Flatcoats are not for the house proud, but they are a great family dog.
