The Proper Color Fix For the Canon Pro-100

I previously posted a video about a band aid fix for inaccurate colors printing with the Canon Pro-100 and Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. It required printing with the printer managing the colors. I figured out what was causing my printer to double profile, and this is the solution I came up with!

    You saved my day ... after moving from my Windows workstation to an M1 Max MacBook Pro I blindly trusted Apple with the available PRO-100 driver and it drove me nuts for hours. Fortunately I quickly found your video about the Canon IJ driver, and after installing it I had my proper color sync back and the prints are coming out beautifully. Thanks a ton from Austin, TX!!

    I am here to say your video saved my prints! Thank you so much. Once I downloaded and installed the Canon IJ Network Tool, I had to wait for the IJ network to pop up before I could select it. It took about 30 seconds to a minute on my network. Before I downloaded the IJ Network Tool, my photos were either lacking color and life when I selected "printer manages colors" or my photos had a magenta hue when "Photoshop manages colors" and I selected the proper paper. Now the photos look exactly as they do in Photoshop. Thank you again!

I am so grateful. I'm going to be printing illustration work to sell and your video really has made my life A LOT easier, saved me hours of frustration not to mention money / resources. Shame I can't upload a photo to youtube of the differences between my first try and the latest! I'm finding using the correct paper driver (downloaded from Innova Fine Art Papers) and having photoshop manage the colours through Coloursync is working well. Now I just need to print tests on all my paper samples using the correct driver for each to decide which paper suits my work. Thanks again.

    Thank you very much for this. I can't remember but I think I installed my Pro 100 with IJ at the beginning (18 months ago) as it's too far away for USB but nevertheless I did it again and this time I let Photoshop Elements manage the colour but the MAIN difference was the selection of 'Perceptual' which you kind of glossed over. Until I did that I got the same old dull yellowish prints but that made my red's red rather than orange. I'll have to do more experimentation. Unfortunately it seems that 'printer adjustment' isn't available in Elements (and any Adobe subscription model is way too expensive for the number of photos I actually print - it starts at over CAD$400 per year). Is there a way of adjusting brightness for printing that I haven't found?

  • @phototocanvaspdx

    @phototocanvaspdx

    2 жыл бұрын

    You can uninstall and reinstall using the IJ with wifi at any time. Its very easy. Perceptual and relative should have very little effect on the prints. You can do your own research but perceptual is essentially trying to match what is on screen and relative is more trying to get accurate colors of what they should be. I use perceptual for photographs and relative for artwork. You can adjust brightness within Lightroom or Photoshop in several ways, from the brightness in the print module or the exposure of the photo. Again I know nothing about Elements as I have never used the software.

  • @jennaralissima

    @jennaralissima

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@phototocanvaspdx I tested this again and I found Perceptual to be only slightly better (with my picture of a red maple tree in fall). I believe that using printer colour matching made it looks quite orange which definitely isn't how I saw it when I took the shot. I think I got confused as to which variable I was testing for which print. I'm using Scott Kelby's book on Elements and he recommends using Elements to control colour. I will test a bit more and settle on 'good enough' rather than burn through all my paper and ink!

    Hi there, I just bought the pixma pro 100s and I feel really annoyed that I bought it! I’m printing from indesign and while the colours aren’t bad I want them closer to what I see. However, my printer didn’t come with a USB so I’ve been printing using wifi. I went to look at the printer drivers and saw that it’s the canon air print that I’ve installed. So my question is, do I need to go out and buy the USB connection so that I can download the correct drivers. Will this fix my colour matching issue? Or is wifi ok to set up the printer and print with?

    @@phototocanvaspdx One more thing...before I went to bed last night, my MacBook told me I had an updated version of Canon software for the printer waiting to be applied, so I did. When I tried to print this morning, NONE of my Canon paper profiles were visible in LRC. Needless to say, I was not impressed. After searching the net I came across an article that says if the AirPrint version of the printer was installed that it would remove the profiles. It was and it did! I followed the steps in the article: delete the printer (AirPrint, IJ and USB) from System Preferences-->Printers and Scanner. Then download and install the driver and add the USB and IJ (as you also advised) but do not add AirPrint. After doing this I went back into LRC and the paper profiles were visible. Whew! Although the article specifically refers to the Pro-10 the same steps apply to the Pro-100 (community.usa.canon.com/t5/Professional-Photo-Printers/Pro-10-ICC-Profiles-on-Mac/td-p/283157#) Word to the wise: be very cautious about applying any updates for Canon software.

    I do have a video about printing from Lightroom on my channel. I’m a bit confused by your comment. Canon IJ is the connection method, and should not be near a paper type. If you are loading the proper driver and only seeing Canon papers it means you haven’t installed your profile correctly. If it is installed, in the Lightroom print option you have to tell it which profiles you want to be present in the drop down menu. Very important that your monitor is not set too bright or your prints will always look too dark. I wouldn’t go above 50% brightness. Keep in mind the image on your screen has a light behind it and prints don’t. Dark images are definitely the hardest to print and often require some trial and error. Printing in Photoshop lets you apply black point compensation which is helpful with dark prints.

    I really wish how to create a connection to the IJ network was explained. It shouldve been simple to connect, but ive been researching like crazy and nothing explains as to how to troubleshoot the problem of the IJ network utility not detecting my computer via usb. For example, Idk what it means when they say make sure your network settings are correct... I just know my computer and printer are connected to the same wifi network and that my usb cable is detected by my computer.

I had to ship out some prints today so i did a temporary solution, i really hope its the cable x.x And its actually the Pro-1000. I figured the troubleshooting is the same, but I made sure I downloaded the correct most updated drivers. Thank you for keeping tabs on this I'll let you know how it goes.

    Hi, Jarred. I followed your advice, and unfortunately, it did not work for me. I've ing own my Pixma Pro 100 for about five years now, and for the first four, I never had many problems match colours with my screen. However, that changed when I updated my Mac to Mojave, and now all my prints never match my screen colour and are also usually very dark. I've updated the driver and firmware to the latest ones with no luck fixing the problem. I've tried printing also using Canons Print STudio Pro utility, but this doesn't work either. I'm ready to give up on this Canon printer and switch to Epson.

    I found this: Reset Your Mac’s Printing System A quick refresh can also help address printing problems after a Mojave update. Here are the instructions: Proceed to the Apple menu. Choose System Preferences. Click Printers & Scanners. On your keyboard, press and hold the Control key. Click anywhere in the list of devices found on the left side of the window. Click Reset printing system once you see a prompt to reset the printing system

    @@phototocanvaspdx Hi there, I've installed my printer with the proper canon driver if that's what you're referring to? For the ICC profile i've tried many different ones. I'm not a printer expert with my HP envy I manage to get similar colors like my screen using all profiles pretty much, but with this canon printer is a nightmare colors are either extremely dull or have an extreme red/magenta tint, no matter what profile I try 😭If the return window was still open i would return it as it's no use to me.

    My canon pro 100 decides to have different issues at random times. The current issue is that if I print 10 pages of the same flyer, the first 4 or 5 look fine, then the following ones gradually shift the blue to pink! Yes, gradually. If I restart my Mac and the printer, it returns to normal, but after a few prints the same problem reoccur!

    To keep my printer unclogged, I print 1x/week - just a .jpg Adobe RGB calibration print, low-res on regular bond paper on my MacBook Air. (I have ONLY used this printer via USB and don't want to add it to the network, which appears to be what the IJ tool does.) Yes I installed the latest drivers. If I simply want to do decent quick prints from the MacBook Air without using photoshop, I don't see how your solutions help? Such prints look awful - dingy, and the blacks are brown. (For my "good" photography, I use a of Photoshop CS3 on an old Mac tower. I haven't tried that in a long time, since I can't even get past the hurdle of printing a simple .jpg on plain ol' inkjet bond paper.)

  • @emmarrichardson6066

    Thank you, I understand that. I was just saying that I print weekly (to keep the inkjets unclogged - not your topic) but that my prints look awful, just using the Mac Preview program, even if there's no apparent clog. There's no "double profiling" involved in Preview, is there? I had a good Preview print from the Pro-100 a couple of weeks ago, but now it's up to its old tricks again. I also use a Canon Pixma MX 920, and its color is OK, but when the Pro-100 is working properly, the quality is obviously superior & professional compared to the Pixma MX 920. Thus I feel discouraged & disinterested in attempting to print professional quality photos.

    It’s still unclear, what’s actually causing the double profiling. I’ve had fine luck with the pro 100 printing it in other software, but I’ve also had fine luck if I make sure the printers installed using the correct driver, which Apple makes difficult. Apple has completely screwed up printing with all printers in Sonoma with no fix in sight.

    Ah. I'm so glad I haven't "upgraded" to Sonoma! I think I'll delete the Pro-100 from the Apple System settings, then download all the latest Pro-100 drivers *again,* & install them before adding the Pro-100 via USB *again.* Will let you know how it works. Not tonight, I'm sick of fooling with it. I very much appreciate your lightning-fast responses!

    No go from Ventura today. After installing the latest printer driver, removing the printer from the system settings, & re-adding it, the print still looks awful. I'm confused about the IJ tool. I thought that was only for wireless printing? That's why I wasn't going to use it, since I only print USB, but if the IJ is necessary for decent prints, I'll try to figure it out. Another approach (for tomorrow - I can only stand so much of this daily) is to try my "photo" computer, the old tower, which runs OS Lion or something but it's complicated to switch from one machine to the other.
