Hey biffa i have a challenge for you that you never done it and it is a game changer, the challenge is to build everything in hardmode/no despawning. And the roads when you create it the first time you cannot fix it later, once you create a road when there is buildings around it then it is fixed and you will lose the challenge when the hardmode traffic goes down to below 80 percent. You can make it suitable for your own style but the idea is that you need to plan ahead before anything else. I don’t know about the money should it be infinite or vanilla. Its depends on the situation wether you like it or not

@Dan gaming it’s not confusing at all. The only thing is you need to plan ahead for your traffic, the intersections and roads because once you built the it will remain the way it is. That was the idea. I want to make it more realistic because when you want to make traffic better in a city in real life you can’t just go and replace the whole building with a roundabout.

@@zamboughnuts I don't know those roads, but just going off numbers, Atlanta and Boston both have populations around half a million. London has nearly 9 million. If you use metropolitan population, Atlanta has 6 million, Boston 4 million, and London 14 million. The only US city with a population comparable to London's is New York. Now I'll grant that US traffic is a different order of magnitude to UK traffic for many reasons, but, still, I have to imagine that sheer weight of numbers has to account for something. I saw the same thing in parts of Asia, people there drove a lot more than folks back home, and cities of much smaller sizes had much worse traffic problems than I expected. Nonetheless, a city of 600 thousand simply doesn't need the same infrastructure as a city of 9 million, even accounting for that, and neither Atlanta or Boston is big enough to even be a contender, I would have thought. I may of course be wholly wrong - I'm just hypothesing here. 🤔

1:59 With that overpass acting as a way for people to get over to the one area without going on the roundabout, one mind as well snip that one section of the triangle going off the roundabout and make the connection after the rise become a one way road for those wanting to leave the industry area. Also, the area along the river should be a mix of low and high density zones if any zoning is placed there. The area near the other high density place the new high density with the district having the high rise ban. That way there is a gradual rise in building height instead of just going from nature to immediate mass of skyscrapers.

I think the best city I’ve ever build in Cities Skylines, was my 125,000 population one. I started out with low density pockets of suburbs in a grid formation with arterial roads running between them. When traffic started becoming an issue at the 4 way six lane road intersections, I used a design I see all the time on interstates and freeways. I used a two way highway road for a bridge over the arterial road, then connected them using single lane ramps (for faster speeds) in a diamond shape. Forming a kind of roundabout but diamond shaped interchange. So when traffic needed to turn left onto the arterial road while heading north, they would take the east ramp, turn left, and drive under the two way highway bridge. To make sure they didn’t just go across the bridge and turn left (which would have clogged traffic coming from the north heading south) I turned the section of six lane road under the bridge into a two way highway as well so they had a faster way to turn left instead of crossing the bridge. Long comment I know lol, but that design kept working flawlessly in all my intersections right up until I hit 140,000 people. I was very proud of myself, specially because I don’t play on PC, I play on PS4

The pre-existing interchanges take up way too much room and don't flow well into the roads that you need them to. American interchanges are much more compact that close to a city, so it plays into your USA design.

@3:57 - the one thing I noticed here is because the highway goes only one direction (the other end is a dead end for now) the popularity of you new connection will mostly be decided by people trying to get out of town. So if the route to go through this new link to the highway and off to their out of town destination is longer that the existing roads, you won't get that many takers. So you will get some users, but the trucks and stuff especially will look at it as just being longer and they will take the other route. it's doubly so because the interchange itself is fiddly. It's just quicker to take the existing route.

Biffa, don’t rule out putting traffic lights on roundabouts. It’s a fairly common thing in the UK (as you probably know) but works especially well in CS due to the silly traffic dynamics

Btw, I don't know if you have noticed, but when applying timed traffic into a T-junction one phase is getting them "wrong". In this case it is the one when those coming from the original roundabout's direction get green to turn into that new connection. The automatically generated lights leave going straight also green -> pedestrian crossing on the other side of the junction never automatically gets green light -> that ped crossing stays green all the time and in worst case slows down traffic.

At 8:50 One of the lanes you went from 2>3 lanes and only did “Hugo” to the middle. Then later 10:42 you kept them from changing lanes at the next node, so now no one will be able to turn left. Which will force them to take the highway to get into your city at the other main highway intersection. Negating the whole point of connecting to this highway intersection

be careful making nodes in the roundabout very big/stretched. the cars coming in dont want to enter an occupied node so it makes it hard for them to get on. you can stretch the entrance to the node only.

Heya Biffa (again). You should check the junction where the two overpasses closely meet (the one that turns left onto the main road and the one before that). I believe you are forcing everyone that comes from the first overpass to go onto the second overpass and thus turn left.

Could I just give a suggestion, The overpass from the starting industrial district to the main city isn't that busy and there isn't much demand for it. You could make a overpass passing over the roundabout and onto the exit onto the highway starting before the the little junction just before the roundabout so that all of the traffic leaving the city doesn't have to go through the traffic lights before the roundabout slowing the traffic down significantly. I am not an expert on trafficology and I am a big fan and I love the series. Keep up the good work 😃 ;-) I love the fact that you are showing your ideas and plans for the near future 🙂

At the intersection for the industry highway access, you used TMPE telling the left lanes to split but marked them as the right lanes splitting. Also, you could add a slip lane on the roundabout coming off the first highway connection by adding an extra lane on that part of the roundabout. Finally, there is no way (node) to change lanes in between the 2 Vanilla Overpasses to Crescent Square.

esp in US builds I add some apartment complexes on frontage roads along highways to juice the population numbers when I’m close to a target. A very common sight off an interstate highway. Takes some manipulation with parks to get land value high enough but worth the time

If you want your city to breath, better not to clog the arteries by allowing the maximum flow of traffic. This can be done by allowing straight on and right turn to share a lane. At 31:20 there are two lanes straight on, one lane right turn only, feeding into three lanes straight on, better to allow straight on traffic to use the right turn only lane, then 3 into 3! Lane mathematics works at junctions too

Some cars, as we can see at 13:40, are coming off the highway, traversing the roundabout and going back on the highway to continue south to the industry area. So you need to check the lane controls at the highway to make sure you're not forcing cars to take an exit that they don't want.

Biffa, your marking tool stop lines aren't something you'd usually see in America or Canada. Usually they'd be either nonexistent, or a white line about 4x as thick as a crosswalk line. Any other are very regional or just very rare.
