    Mississitea! Maybe it's just where I grew up but in my experience driving in rural Midwest America, 85% of the stop signs are "rolling stops" ie: they're treated like YIELDs. The cims are much more conscientious drivers than real people. ;P I think for the sake of the game, YIELD signs are fine. Also, I think having the left turn as a dedicated lane is better for a US build because unless otherwise specified all right hand turns are YIELDs, even at a red light (I live in Japan now where there isn't an equivalent and it drives me crazy.) this means that straight and right-turning traffic flow at comparable speeds while left-turns are much slower.

  • @naitdeth
    @naitdeth2 жыл бұрын

    One thing I've noticed Biffa, is that you must make some allowances for the game. Stop signs are very American and outnumber Yield by a lot, but CS doesn't like that too well. Same thing with dedicated turning lanes. We don't have too much of them around here in the states, but they're not really needed. We adapt better than the cims do to a car slowing down in front of us. The point? Don't worry too much about these granular levels of realism. We're not :)

    most places around the world don't have dedicated turning lanes except for busy-ish roads, or roads that are designed to handle a lot more traffic in the future. I live in a metropolis and we really only have left turn lanes, if any turning lanes at all, in most intersections and that's only because left turners have to stop and wait for people going straight through (since we drive on the right). But in CS you always have to choose between whether you want to do it realistically or according to what works best for the game. There's a reason stop signs are very rare in Europe - they're terrible for traffic flow, and forcing vehicles to stop incidentally causes more pollution when they have to start again (something you don't have to deal with in the game). They're really only used in intersections with poor visibility

  • @JohnnyHughes1

    It is quite true that here in the USA, stop signs vastly outnumber yield signs in most areas and that there are few roundabouts. But in cities skylines, yield signs work much better. Same with roundabouts and asymmetrical turn lanes. I mean.. You just have to decide what you are trying to accomplish. Do you want to simulate the look and feel of a US suburban area, or do you want to max optimize traffic flow. Personally, I almost always use yeild signs to optimize traffic flow.

  • @JacksonOwex

    @JacksonOwex

    I think these things are all WAY MORE common than people think but they aren't common in their area so they believe they aren't as common as they are(whether consciously or subconsciously)! My town of less than 8000 people has more than a handful of dedicated turning lanes and a couple of places that get treated as if they are asymmetrical roads with dedicated turning lanes, I think they are just cut corners so the big trailers can get around without hopping the curb but cars will still squeeze in like it's a third lane!

    Rather than focusing on increasing the capacity of individual intersections, I would suggest taking a closer look at the road network and the road hierarchy. You have pretty big areas of local roads that connects to the collectors and arterials on only a few points, that means that you’re forcing the local roads near to those few connections to act as collectors, which they don’t have the capacity for and as a result they clog up. If you want long distances between the intersections on the arterials and the main collectors, then the roads connecting to these should be upgraded to collectors as well, so that they can handle the amount of traffic. These kinds of intersections also require traffic lights to function well, stop signs or yield signs are only appropriate for intersections where there’s a relatively small flow of traffic, for example on rural roads or in areas of local roads. When traffic flow is too big for stop signs and yield signs you can upgrade to a roundabout, and when the traffic flow is too big for a roundabout you can upgrade to traffic lights, and when the flow is too big for roundabouts you can upgrade to an interchange.

    23:02 Asymmetric roads are great when you have different directions vehicles can go. If you combine them with a Ctrl-S lane connectors go horky borky. And 26:04 vehicles only seem to use one of the lanes. 30:27 Having both connections is probably the better option - but there is room for improvement for the old connection: this bridge descending in a loop behind the bus hub is actually the more complicated part of a trumpet interchange. You can easily reduce left turns by just completing the trumpet design also connecting to the other side of the main road.

    Biffa, just a note about American traffic lights (at least in Minnesota where I reside). When you have dedicated left turn lanes, we have a left turn state for traffic lights (in the busier intersections where there are traffic issues). The way you have it now, left turns have to compete with ongoing straight thru traffic. Simply add a state in your timed traffic lights for left turns, and turn off left turns in the straight through state if you have dedicated left turn lanes. Very American. Right turns can do whatever they want.

    Hey Biffa, about that thing that happened with the Fire Engine @15:30, I've seen it happen a lot when you have dedicated turning lanes right after a turn. There's no node in between, so they will make a turn, go onto the lane that forces them to turn again, and do that long route instead of picking the lane that had the straight-through setup in the first place. When there's no node in between two sets of consecutive dedicated turning lanes, that problem becomes quite frecuent, and it can also mess with the bus routes (the reason you sometimes see the route make weird turns when planning them). Hope this helps :)

    I voted on Teattle, but to make that name more realistic I think we need more elevated terrain in the city, but then again Mississipitea we have a good river close to the city already. But what happened with 00:29 - 00:35 "I promise by the end on this episode we will have a name for this city" and you end this episode with us choosing between Teattle and Mississipitea. Would also like to see more RICO placements on things to make this more planed areas for both commercial and residential areas, and also you can create more custom malls or even strip malls with different stores. And you can also change some buildings from commercial to residential to fill the needs for each type, like if the old mall didn't go as well as planned it can still looks like the mall, but with some apartments in them, or that some smaller stores have bought an old low density house and opened an convenient store in it to fill the need for some local products in the areas. Or even that some old houses have been turned to some offices to give the people of the city more jobs. And we need the "more realistic population mod" added to. So in other words do this city more like your UK map with some things but keep it still US as long as possible

    Just a comment from my perspective as I am a civil engineer specializing in transportation in Canada. Cities Skylines traffic modelling responds somewahat similar to the real world expectations except in the game, it appears vehicles only change lanes on designated nodes in the road, which is most noticeable on freeways where vehicles make abrupt movements. Item #1) One key item of importance in real world traffic engineering is intersection spacing, also called access management. Real world roads need sufficient space between intersections to allow efficient lane changes, smoother speeds and space for vehicles to que between intersections to prevent grid lock. Item #2) Roadways are classified in terms of road usage. Freeways serve long distance trips, arterials connect to freeways and run beside/adjacent to neighbourhoods or districts, some arterial toads have commercial access directly on them, collectors connect to arterials and typically pass through neighbourhoods, and locals allow access to individual properties such as the typical modern subdivision with cul de dacs and cresents. Locals if designed right will prevent shortcutting through your neighbourhood. Item #3) Another thing is having roads with proper speed limits for the class of road. Freewys are fast and lower clas roads bet progressively slower. This also prevent drivers from shortcutting through neighbourhoods as they prefer to take more direct freeway or arterial road routes. Ideally neighbourhoods shoukd be designed as cells, and arterials and freeways do not cut theough them, have no direct access to the arterial. Freeways have interchange access control only, many types of interchanges exist from total systems interchanges with all free flow ramps or parclo type interchanges with signals for the cross road only. The freeway speed itself ranges from 80km/h to 110km/h. Arterial roads should have signal or roundabout control only, typically have multiple lanes and turning lanes, speed limit of 60 or 70km/h. Collectors can have a variety of signal and stop controls, speed limit 40 or 50km/h. Locals have stop or yield controls, have only single lane each way, speed limits 30 or 40km/h.

    Lovely progress in USA! I would suggest, for timed traffic lights, keeping the minimum low while increasing the maximum when needed. That would ensure that every step gets a more regular turn rather than having one or two steps minimum 8.

    Don't worry too much about using Yields. We do have them here in the US, they're just very targeted. That intersection you placed it on since there isn't much traffic, it is one normally would have a stop sign but probably could get argued into a Yield. But here no one would ever do that lol

    15:15 In America we do use the stop signs a lot. Though what is making the city here begin having problems is that new area not having a good number of connections to the main artery for people to leave or enter. As of this moment he has five with three of them going to an artery road rather far away from where much of the traffic would go, that being the right side artery leading to the highway, industry, and commercial areas. For the road along side the track, I would add two more roads to the artery, and then on the right side artery at least five connections. Making so few connections with a stop sign is asking for backup to occur.

  • @robertcherman

    Here is some thoughts on stop signs versus yield signs. When you have a grid like that, almost every intersection needs to have stop signs, not just on the major road. There is a couple of ways of doing it to really control your traffic. For example, you could make every intersection a 4-way stop, so everyone has to stop, this will help the traffic. Or you could put stop signs on all the roads going east and west, and none on the north and south. The traffic then will want to go north and south to miss all the stop signs. And, where all the small roads meet up with the big main roads, (the two roads going through the middle of the grid that are main roads, and the 4 main roads on the outside of the grid) and put stop signs on all four sides, or a traffic ligt.

    Another vote for Teattle. Also, while the parking with the planters looks nice, it leaves that outside lane completely unused. You can probably fit a lot more parking with the angled spaces and Anarchy in some planters here and there.

  • @johngleich1379

    So, in the US, 4 lane roads generally add an extra turning lane at intersections. Right lane can turn right or go through, left lane just goes through, and far left lane is a dedicated lane. For REALLY busy roads... a 4 lane road could have two dedicated left-hand turn lanes, two through lanes, and a dedicated right hand turn lane. Obviously, space constraints can be an issue... but you generally DON'T see a 4 lane road that flows into a dedicated left or right lane, with just one thru lane.

    I got rid of nearly all my yields after traffic picked up. Cars just stay perpetually stopped at them once a road reaches a critical amount of flow, so it’s often better to let them all duke it out at intersections rather than back up and cause compounding issues. Then, after another critical flow point, you have to implement a traffic light or redesign the intersection.

    The traffic is crazy because there aren't enough connections to the collector, because the throat length between the frontage road and the collector is too short, and because there's only one connection between the two districts and it involves multiple junctions (e.g. the collector roads aren't functioning as collector roads, and the local roads are being forced into that function).
