If you're interested, there are several appearances of Louis on Marc Maron's podcast where you see this exact side of him, only even more personal and human because they're old friends going back to when they first started comedy, who eventually had a falling out and a reconciliation in their friendship. Some of the most fascinating stuff I've ever heard.

It's a postmodernist analysis of American society, deconstructing how it established itself, and how it shifted in response to itself. And the toughest pill to swallow, which no political pundit is brave enough to admit, is that there's not clear path forward from the mess that American society is in. Seeing how the pandemic divided us more than it united us, I'm scared. That was the test for us to prove that we would unite when the time called for it, and it instead fractured us.

I have never voted for him, but before he was President, when basically nobody supported him, the only person he was trying to impress was himself. Now he has a good chunk of the country supporting him, and Trump has failed to realize that his fans mostly liked him for his sincerity (I'm not talking about all Americans who supported or voted for Trump, just his die-hard fans). His actual personality and policies were fairly irrelevant to his fans. They just wanted to see the underdog win. Trump thinks his fans like it when he acts overconfident, or when he makes fun of his opponents, so he tries to appeal to his fans by acting overconfident and making fun of his opponents. Initially, it seemed sincere when he behaved brashly, but at this point it's so performative.

1:42:35 I love that Louis understands the nuance of Johnny Cash songs that has been lost to time. Country songs get made fun of for their simple lyrics, but songs like those are deeply emotional. The break in Johnny’s voice in the original recording when he hits that line “well if they freed me from this prison, if that railroad train was mine, I bet I’d move it on a little further down the line” sends chills down my spine. The power and pain in his voice showed the deep empathy he had for those Folsom inmates.

Stumbled on this saga while looking for a 2 minute clip of Louis talking to Gillis about SNL, and it’s legitimately one of the greatest 6 hours of podcasting I’ve ever seen in my life. Louis and Shane, please keep making podcasts together. It’s legitimate gold.

I love how over 4 episodes spanning over 50+ years, for every president Louis has commented "I loved him when I was a kid."

Listening to louis is so soothing honestly. Puts life into perspective.

I agree. when his cancellation happened I did the deep dive and my sister was like...he's just a comedian....and I told her....him being funny was just a perk...this bead on life is second to none in my book. Hearing him talk about being a parent changed my life..and was funny. Hearing him talk about entitlement on a plane changed my life...and was funny. But the first part ends up being more important than the second part.

Louis telling Patrice where that word came from is one of best bits ever. That entire conversation was great

This 4 part series is very possibly my favorite podcast series I’ve ever listened to. Amazing stuff

Out of all the podcasts louie did during his tour this was def the one he enjoyed the most. Torch passing moment.

This entire episode run with Louis has been unreal. Made me realize how much I miss Louie’s commentary on just about anything like in the o&a days. Louis has a very unique comedic voice and I think it’s shining through more than ever now.

Louis, Ant, Patrice, and Norton talking about anything is entertaining. It's crazy when you listen to them and think that's how it should be. Then you listen to other podcasts where there's no chemistry or feel formulaic and that makes me more grateful for Matt and Shane and O and A.

This four part series may be the best fucking podcast episodes created since The Ricky Gervais Show. Good shit, Shane. Much respect and thank you.

These two need to do more history podcasts. I would love a 3 hour podcast on the Civil War and another on Teddy Roosevelt.

This is the first podcast miniseries I’ve watched that I immediately wanted to rewatch. Insane amount of facts dropped by two comedy greats, and in such an entertaining way too

I miss this part of Louis, we only saw the historian side of him on Opie and Anthony very briefly. To get 4 podcasts of him gushing about history and presidents is awesome. This rivals some of Conan O’Brien’s interviews with actual historians. Love comedians who are well-read.

Also great to see two "canceled" comedians talking about subjects unrelated to culture/Twitter BS. I've been so burned out on comedians/podcasts for that reason but seeing the GOATs branching out gives me hope

I'm center left - but I have to say, Louis CK's insight about progressives at 1:43:47 is one of the most striking and thoughtful analyses I've heard - and I have a degree in political science.

This is the best podcast series i've heard in a long time. Louie's presidential knowledge is boundless. Also I'm impressed by Shane's breadth of knowledge in early American history. It's great to hear Louie's perspective of the more contemporary presidents that he has lived through with his funny anecdotes. His dream about Nixon killed me, suprised he never turned that into a bit! Gold!

I wish Louis brought up the time he was on the O&A show and Donald Rumsfeld was the guest. He asked Rumsfeld if he was a lizard person. I think you can still find it on KZread.

The whole time, he's trying to get Rumsfeld to just give him a straight answer. I could be wrong, but I don't believe he does. The joke of course was that someone in government can't answer even the most ridiculously simple question directly.

Letting Donald just drone on and meander around the question, then capped it with another 10 after he hung-up on how fucking mental that just was. Solid clip

I watched all four parts of this podcast in one day. It was so engrossing that I couldn't stop watching. The real gem was listening to Louis for the last 30 minutes or so of part 4. So great to listen to Shane and Louis hope there is more to come. Missed Matt on the last 3 parts hope things are good with you!

I could watch another 6 hours of this. Thank you Matt and Shane and Louis. Loved this.

Crazy that I found something so specific and niche of a topic as standup/comedians ripping jokes and legitimate history stories and lessons laid out together like this. Literally two of my favorite things that I NEVER thought I would be able to enjoy simultaneously. This is fuckin' amazing! FUCKIN' A!

Its amazing how fascinating comics are when they're not talking about comedy!

I’ve rewatched the presidents episodes over and over and just in this last run through I noticed the subplot of Gardini and Rosie midway through part 3. Just three dawgs hanging on the couch. Seeing that dawg exchange at 2:55 of this part is hilarious.

I loved seeing Shane get big dawg'd on his own pod. He wanted to put these last two on Patreon so bad.

This was incredible. I’m going to listen to it at least one more time. Great info to know. Great stories. You guys really know a lot. Shane knows a lot about the early presidents and Louie knows a lot about the later ones. Legendary stuff.

Just blew through the whole series! Would be great to hear you guys doing a series on things like the lineage of British Royalty, Roman Emperors, African Rulers, hell even the books of the Bible. Learnin and laughin is the best combo!

this was one of my favorite things to come across youtube in years. Great subject matter by 2 great comedians who actually knew a thing or two about history...and arguing less then one would imagine one clearly more conservative and one who is actually a liberal... so interesting and really great to see 2 guys respect each others point of view and compare notes....never knew either of them to be as knowledgeable about history as they were. I thought I knew a lot and I definitely picked up gems along the way...soooo pleasureable. What a great time watching and listening to them...

This should be required viewing to graduate high school. One of the best things I’ve seen in a long time
