The Power of Deliberate Creative Teams | Amy Climer | TEDxAsheville
What if teams could tap into their collective creativity and lead innovation - not just sporadically, but consistently? When teams have a shared purpose, strong team dynamics, and use a creative process, they have the ability to innovate when needed deliberately. Amy Climer has coached hundreds of individuals and teams helping them be more creative. Through her research, she developed an assessment tool to measure the three elements all teams need in order to be creative. Dr. Amy Climer works with teams who want to be amazing, collaborate at a higher level, and solve problems creatively. She is a speaker, trainer, and coach focusing on creativity and innovation. Her clients describe her as approachable, inspiring, and transformative. Amy has a Ph.D. in Leadership and Change. She hosts The Deliberate Creative™ Podcast where she shares practical advice and strategies to help leaders build innovative teams. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The courage to speak up to more senior people is now called a new generation of the work force. All that aside, every generation thinks it either knows best or knows it all. Thank goodness collaboration is now vogue.

Really awesome talk! I recently got into a position to manage a creative team after working other teams. Creative teams work... different. I did not really know how to approach them, since my previous experience were with really financially motivated teams in an extremly competitive environment. I quickly learned that you cannot put a creative person under the same pressure as a stock broker, but did not know how to tap their potentials. You really helped me out. I will have to grow as a person and become more understanding and supportive for my people. I no longer get to be the sergeant, that orders his people directly into the line of fire and trust on them to come out on top but rather a general, that gives rough directions and let them figure out the in between the objectives. Also I learned that I really have to change my tone and approach, hard works and stress don't work here. But if you give these guys the opportunity to use their talents, boy, can they deliver!
@AmyClimer
2 жыл бұрын
@Lith7ium! I'm so glad this was helpful. I think you are spot-on - it's about letting team member bring their skills and talents to the work. When you do, they will flourish. Your analogy about a general works well here. It will even work with the stock broker teams. 😊
This is exactly why I've always been a fan of the boardroom brainstorm, as long as it stays on task! And then the creative team having the space and ability to do as they see fit and continue to include the rest of the team along the project... I swear it keeps up morale!
@AmyClimer

It does keep up morale Mario. Have you seen the research by Dr. Teresa Amabile called The Progress Principle? I think these points go for more than just creative teams, but any circumstance where you have to work together. Staff morale, dynamics... They play such an important part in how we put ourselves forward, or don't. When you are with like minded people, or not even like minded but have the ability to communicate openly and to be authentic, that's where all the innovation comes from! Great talk Amy! The separation of ideas and the evaluation of those ideas is very interesting and seems to me that it would require restraint on the part of the team members. Being able to have that restraint would contribute to a safe environment. It would be great to see an example of how that would work in practice. Lots of valuable information!

You are right - that separation is important. I teach those strategies in my Deliberate Creative workshops to help teams understand how to apply them. When you have a clear process for how to to this, it's surprisingly simple.
Really great talk!! If only our leaders understood this, what is happening right now is frightening.

There is nothing more rewarding than being on an energetic creative team, regardless of age. Wisdom and experience can guide the process toward the bigger picture; the journey is all about the discovery and delivery of a team working together. If you take that away, you loose drive and the individual passion to make it happen.

Absolutely love this. There are so many great small changes we can make to shift the perspective from "no, that will never work" to "I hear you on that...what else do we need to make that work?" Along with this, we also need to shift mindsets from "I'm not an artist or creative person so I can't help with this" to increase engagement in the process.

Businesses aren't left behind because they stayed the same, the people who worked for them stayed the same. The new ones emerging were created by forward thinkers and new generations. Lack of internal personal and personel change is only concerned by the status quo. Any reference to the way it used to be is always a sign that change is required.
@AmyClimer
3 жыл бұрын
Great point that it's about people staying the same. I think of a business as a group of people so you're right, it's not the business, it's the people. I'm loving seeing the new ideas and enterprises that are emerging right now. Lots of creativity happening!
I've been that person who has killed a brainstorming session because at that time I thought I knew it all. The truth is, at a certain stage in my career, I stopped leading with an open mind.

I've been that person too! I think most of us have been there at one time or another. Now the challenge is to shift back into that open mind and listen. Setting up systems that increase creativity makes this easier.
Purpose to me is passion, that reason for being, commitment to my daily journey and testing myself in personal and professional forums. I've worked with many slackers in my time and I have no issue moving through obstacles. Not doing so, staying silent, status quo is just easier especially when you have been conditioned not to make waves. That's just not for me.

How does this work now remotely? better or worse? Any one have any experience?

I've been teaching teams how to be creative for years and have found it's the same remotely. Even before the pandemic I worked with remote teams. If teams are willing to embrace the collaborative technology tools, such as Mural, Miro, Jamboard, etc. then it's quite easy to be creative when remote.
Hi! I love this talk. Do we have a transcript for this?
Trying to change our old conditioned thinking has been my lifetime journey and purpose. The line "this is how we do it" immediately demotivates me.
Being afraid to speak up is a common problem. I suppose its all part of a fear based structure. Its easier to keep people in line.
What if management was smart enough to facilitate this?
Great reframing of how ineffective attempts to help are actually well-intended, and making the case for finding more deliberate, effective process.
