The PM's defence spending spree - what's it really worth? | Sitrep podcast

Rishi Sunak has pledged tens of billions of pounds to spend 2.5% of GDP on defence by 2030, but how much will it improve our military capability?
Professor Michael Clarke explains why the extra cash will probably be used to firm up our forces rather than making them bigger, and we fact check how much of the £75bn figure given by the Prime Minister is actually new money.
Months after US military supplies to Ukraine effectively dried up the Washington deadlock is broken. But what will the new $60bn package deliver, when, and how much difference can it make to the war?
And we hear from the London Defence Tech Hackathon where coders, engineers, and businesses had a direct line to Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefield as they tried some rapid problem solving for the troops.
Kate Gerbeau presents with expert analysis from Professor Michael Clarke.

We should be copying Poland and spending 4% building up rapidly to a point where we can actually be combat effective and then cutting it back down to 2.5 at a maintience level . We cannot keep our current serving personnel in the conditions they are housed in with such broken kit and expect them to fight a war . Its an absolute disgrace .

2.5% by 2030 is a meaningless commitment given he doesn't have the authority to actually do this since he'll be ousted shortly. I think it's a shame they didn't commit to this a long time ago, and do an immediate uplift this week to show some commitment.

It's worth nothing if MOD procurement processes are not reformed.

1 Warship about 1 Billion A couple of tanks. 1 New Fighter and replacing some of our depleted ammunition stock and the 75 Billion is Gone. That’s before Any salaries improvement, which is more than justified. Get real 3% GDP would just about start to plug some of the hole

Need more at least 3.5 - 4% at least. I say this all the time the main things we should spend on first is our Military (as they protect us & our country 🇬🇧) the NHS (as they heal & fix us & care for the ill & dying) & like Fire Service, Police Service etc etc that’s what we should look after first straight away as they are the most important.

You could give the MoD 200 Billion and procurements will still make a right mess of it just like Nimrod 2nd gen right now the crowsnest radar will be fully operational next year, but it’s being withdrawn from service in 2029 so £430 million for 4 years of crowsnest! And giving kit and ammunition away to Ukraine when our forces are really struggling is just plain stupid! British Army 72,000 - civil servants in the MoD stands at over 60,000! Japan MoD 19,000 and they have 250,000 in uniform!

Has it been costed? The last time this govt tried something big without costing it it cost the UK an awful lot of money to try and rectify it, and made them unable to be taken seriously. Again.

There are appx 15 segments of government expenditure. We raise defence budget by appx .5% that requires less than 0.04 percent decrease in departments across the board. There's ya costing. Its nothing, stop whinging.

Nice to see this increase actually explained in a realistic and truthful way based on some facts and real statistics, from experts in the defence field, rather than the political spin and boasting from a lying and useless Prime Minister who hopefully won't even be around for much longer. Maybe a 4% increase is more like what we need

We are giving billions of pounds to help other countries instead of spending that money on our own defence. The prime minister is running around the world throwing money like confetti.
