In 7th grade, I was sent to the school counselor after a writing assignment. The task was to look at a picture and write a paragraph describing the emotions evoked by the photo. The picture was off a dull gray winter landscape with a barren tree. I had described the absence of leaves on the tree as if the tree had cried them off due to the sadness of the season.... I had a week's worth of meetings with the school counselor over that one sentence, so how this monster didn't get any flags for what he wrote, is beyond me.

In my AP British Lit class we had to write our own rendition of the "to be or not to be" soliloquy from Hamlet. I, struggling with my mental health and having recently been prescribed medication, wrote something to the effect of "to take or not to take," exploring my thoughts and emotions about depending on medication to feel better. I was sent to the guidance office SO FAST. The counselor was very concerned and I'm like... the whole soliloquy is about whether it is better to live or die. 😂 Anyway. I was fine, but it still caused red flags to pop up and it was addressed.

I'm in no way defending the school's (or teacher) actions but it wasn't really until Columbine a year and a half later that they began to take these signs seriously. I'm old enough to remember the first major school shooting where a kid started shooting at other kids in San Diego. There were all kinds of signals before Brenda Spencer started shooting out of her bedroom window at the school playground across the street but instead of getting her the help she needed her father decided to get her the very gun she used as a Christmas present just a couple weeks before. It shouldn't have taken 20 years before teachers and administrators started taking things like that essay seriously.

my middle school language arts instructor would have us roleplay the Holocaust, so i imagine she was a bit over teenage sensitivity. she also taught a class specifically for gifted students, and she openly discussed the suicide i included in mine, and the mass deaths another student included in hers, about an essay prompt detailing happiness. this wasn't too long ago, either, i'm in my early twenties, and she still teaches, though fortunately my younger siblings will never have her class.

Reminds me of a kid we had in school named Connor Betts. He was caught in school with a list of girls he was going to rape (no consequences) then a list of people he was going to kill (still no consequences). Then he told his girlfriend about how great mass shootings are, and he wanted to do it (she didn't tell anyone). Then on August 4, 2019 he went on a shooting spree in a bar district(The oregon district) near our school......All the signs were there, but this kid was allowed to buy multiple guns and vests and combat gear.... If you hear something disturbing like this, don't just let it slide. Because as far as I see it, anyone that had the ability to do or say something and didn't has blood on their hands as well.

Honesty and truth are lost in translation
His parents had problems with favoritism and he didn't get along with his brother. That sucks. First girlfriend breaking up with you- that also really sucks. Getting picked on at school for being heavyset and also probably for being held back a grade- also sucks. I mean all of that sucks. But none of it is particularly horrific, it's just crappy. Everyday, someone has the first love of their life break up with them, and it sucks, but they don't usually go out and shoot people over it. This is the best example ever of "everyone's life comes with a certain amount of crap, but 99% of us don't handle it like this."
As someone who grew up in a broken home, as well as being picked on for being short (5’6) and being poor, plus “smelling bad” because my mother smoked like a chimney. Plus a couple kids who came over saw my mother trashed (because she was an abusive alcoholic) and made fun of me for being the son of an abusive alcoholic after she embarrassed me. We were evicted multiple times and lived in a motel room. My point is, I’m a now a nearly 40 year old fully disabled combat veteran, I own my own truck and home and I have a fiance whom I’ve been with for nearly 12 years after meeting thanks to match. Oh, I’m also an Atheist which is the biggest reason I didn’t take my thoughts of ending my Suffering earlier. My point is, LUKE’S STORY ISN’T UNIQUE NOR DOES IT JUSTIFY WHAT HE DID!!! HE WAS JUST WEAK IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD!!

Exactly, I am still poor and still live like shit. My parents really didn't care about us even if they said they did. We basically raised our younger siblings but our parents refused to truly care. We were forced to step in because they wouldn't, it was only screaming and threats when they were around. The neglect we went through was just awful, I'm thankful that any physical abuse kind of fizzled out when the 4th child was born- since it was our job, we completely stopped anything related to spanking. It was only a threat our dad would do, but he was too tired from college to rlly go through with it (Plus they were almost never home) I'm 22, disabled, unable to work, I live in our cruddy childhood home paying rent to our father who (now) has a better job and lives with than he did back then and he lives with his girlfriend and one of our siblings, the other two voluntarily live with Mom bc she sucks but they don't like his GF. We still see them both even though I am not too happy about it. Life can be just awful and it's often hard, still now as an adult, disability doesn't give a lot of wiggle room for food that is healthy, we could never move out of the worst place in my mind because the housing and apartment market is absolutely terrible. life feels bleak sometimes. I'm still not happy But at my worst, when I want to die, no matter what anger I feel, it's only directed to me. Do I have angry thoughts? yes, but who does it, the difference is acting on it. The anger and violence in my soul gets redirected towards me bc I actively do not want to be the monster in my head. I have mental illness So many people would think of as 'evil' or dangerous. But I don't want to hurt strangers, what did they do to me? Nothing, they are living their own lives, My suffering should not be theirs. No amount of Bullying and abuse I went through makes me want to kill and attack strangers and people who are 100% innocent. He does not deserve compassion, he does not deserve an excuse, people go through horrible shit all the time and they never ever do anything this awful. It's the same with any type of murderer who had a bad childhood or life, so do millions of people. It can be an explanation for some behaviors, but imo, for most, it barely even explains anything. It's never an excuse. I'm not an atheist, but I'm not religious either (more Agnostic but spiritual, in a way where I think anything could be real- but we are not ever going to truly find that out, I believe in stuff like ghosts and otherworldy things, but I also think as humans and 'mortals' we would never be able to reach a level where we would get the answers to stuff like gods and the universe. Anything is possible, but I respect whatever people believe as long as it is respectful towards me as well)

This brings back memories of my own teenaged heartbreaks. I was dating a guy from grades 10-11 who broke up with me because he said that I was too focused on my studies and started dating one of my friends before breaking up with her and getting back with me. Only thing is that I found out one day that he never actually broke up with my friend when he got back with me and was dating me at the same time he was dating my friend. Yeah, that was an awkward confrontation since I caught him and her snogging one another in an empty classroom. My friend thought I was lying to try to break her and him up. There was drama FOR WEEKS before another one of my friends had enough and had an intervention for all three of us where she forced the guy to confess to what he had done. Looking back on it... It's all absurd. I can't actually believe that happened to me and I definitely was heartbroken over it for a bit. Now I look back on it and think of it as a learning experience. I didn't ever consider taking a weapon to school to take my revenge on my friend and my ex boyfriend.
Let my son write a paper like that and i had no idea, it would be a serious problem. My goodness it didn't take a rocket scientist to know this kid had serious problems.

The problem is clearly that the parent(s) aren't like you, I, or probably most of the people watching this. Like how Luke said in the beginning (3:02) his mom would go out and party regularly and leave him home alone. I highly doubt a mom like that was paying attention to most, if anything, in his life. She probably couldn't even tell you what grade he was in.
Luke is just a big baby narcissist. There is no excuse for his anti-social behavior except for the fact that he is anti-social. No "difficult" childhood is an excuse for murder. Luke says he was not spoiled or lazy, weak or slow witted and our lie detector test has determined that that is a lie.

I moved schools when my mom married my step dad and we moved to a rural community. I was bullied so much in high school I thought about self destruction MANY times. But instead it made me silent. I went about my life quietly, and finally as an adult (in my 40's) I got help! I realized I wasn't the burden that I felt like. Now, I am a stay at home grandma, I do Farmer's markets, I have even started a KZread channel teaching others how to be a master hooker (I crochet) and I feel better, NEVER once in my horrifying upbringing that I glossed over did I dream of grabbing my dad's predator repellent and going to school and hurting others.....That would be the last thing on my mind!!!!

This is so wild to see this as I lay here not able to sleep, mindlessly thumbing through videos. Let me explain with a brief backstory. My parents divorced when I was 3 and moved across the country from each other. My mom lived in TX and my dad AL. I lived with my mom at first in TX. When I would visit Alabama in the summers, there wasn’t a lot for me to do in tiny Newbern, AL (population 300). So, my grandmother asked her friends if they had any grandkids I could play with. This must have been the summer of 1993 or 1994. Her friend- Mrs. Mary Tims- said I could play with her grandson because he was down for the summer as well. His name was Luke. He was a couple of years older than me, but we had some fun at first. He was a smartass like me and our mouths got us in trouble with my traditional Southern grandmother. We had some good times but I started to get this funny feeling about him. As he got more comfortable around me, another side of him started to show through. I started catching glimpses of darkness. I can’t remember any specific instances, but years later after it all went down my grandmother recounted that I just didn’t want to play with him anymore and I had said I wanted to just spend the short time I had there with her. So yeah anyway that’s my story of how I knew the first widely-publicized school shooter. You can confirm by checking my page. I moved to Newbern a couple of years later and I have my high school football highlight video up there. A quick search of Mrs Mary Tims’ obit will show you who her daughter was. I’ve lost a lot of the memories over time but they were so much clearer right after he did that stuff and it felt so surreal walking around my grandmothers land in tiny Newbern, AL and thinking of playing with this kid who is now making worldwide news headlines for killing people. Definitely taught me I had good instincts about people. If you get that feeling about somebody, trust it.

Thank you for not including the account of animal abuse within the body of the main video. I cannot with that stuff. If I accidentally stumble upon a picture or am exposed to a story about it, it stays with me. Being cruel to other humans is horrific, and inexcusable, but on some level, it's understandable. People can cause others strife, anger, resentment, feelings of abandonment, or feelings of being unsafe. None of this justifies cruelty or murder, (unless in self defense), but again... there's usually a reason underlying the action. But, animals?? They are completely innocent, and they give their all for humans. A pet dog or cat gives back love a million times. This kid is not just a victim of a messed up family and school bullying. I have empathy for that. This kid is a little asshole, hurting and killing the dog who loved and trusted him implicitly.

I watched the video about what he and his friend did to his dog before this one. He is true evil. I understand how being mistreated can mess someone up. But if someone turns to hurting innocent animals, that's not just a result of being mistreated. That's evil to the core. The abuse being a trigger doesn't excuse their actions nor is it the sole cause of their behavior. If ever there was a valid argument for eugenics, it's people like this. If there is anything that should be eliminated from the gene pool, it's lack of empathy.
Happy Friday 💜
These people really like "Nobody likes me! Let me prove why that's justified!"
I'm from Pearl and though I had moved and graduated before the shooting, I had family and friends there that day. Rarely see this story covered. Thank you.
I’ve watched all of this man’s work !!! Almost every single episode, it’s 4:40am here !!!
I truly appreciate you making the dog torture optional. I must be kind of psycho too, because hearing about animal abuse, especially dogs, truly haunts my soul and is deeply upsetting (more so than humans). They are the most purely beautiful creatures given to us, and they are abused so often. I love cats and other animals, too, but i have two gorgeous Alaskan malamutes, and they are so much of my heart and soul. I also have two insanely wonderful and amazing children, but unlike animals, they both know how to defend themselves and aren't idiots. How anyone could hurt animals... 😔 there truly are people among us who are straight from hell. I have to note, yesterday at the grocery store, I was asked to donate to the local humane society in the checkout process. I asked the lady if the donation went on to the transaction because it didn't seem like it did. She said yes and showed me. (It rounded and I was embarrassed because it was so little. ) I will do an amount next time. She said, " you know, people donate WAY more often to animal charities than human ones. " so I guess I might not be so strange. I guess I feel like animals are so pure and there is inherently so much evil in humans.

Or...you might wonder why you can listen to the murder of humans & not donate to humanitarian causes but you can't bear the thought of animals being hurt or murdered. That is just weird.
@Abingdale

It’s not weird. It’s pretty common. I think it’s easier to sympathize with animals because they can’t disappoint like humans, much more complicated, can. So, like OP said, they seem more pure. OP isn’t weird and shouldn’t be judged. But it is something to consider and reflect on.

Just FYI, I do donate time, money and products for silent auction to a LOT of human charities too. Mostly veterans since I am one as well, and community people that have found themselves in a hard time in their lives. We, the American Legion, where I live do at least 20 per year and I also do the 21 gun salute for veterans funeral ceremonies. It's more the monsters in the videos that I couldn't care less less about.

@@liliesrnice You’re assuming that those of us that don’t want to see or think of animals being tortured and killed are immune to human suffering. You couldn’t be more wrong. You need to rethink your comment and consider not judging the OP.
Something about hearing a Southern voice saying “she was like my sister” and “I loved her more than anything” in the same sentence…
Thank you for covering this. I grew up in the area, so I definitely remember that day.

"Self entitled" is redundant. Self centered, self serving are both acceptable substitutes. Okay you can all judge me now.
He said was seeing demons. I guess the demons like cry babies 🙄🤣
So I just had to paus after you said that his class assignment didn’t raise any flags with the school… even if school shootings weren’t the same in the 90s as they are today, that assignment is nuts. Makes me wonder if the teacher even bothered to read it. Thanks for the upload (which I’ll now continue watching 😊)!
Thank you for doing 2 separate videos. I love animals! A boy in High School nicknamed me Elly May after the Clampetts. I had a lot of critters growing up. You do great work!
The fact that the writing assignment didn't raise any red flags is astonishing
Thank you xx
Thank you!
Even before he did anything to humans, he was a monster. What he did to his dog? I’ll tell you what, I haven’t cried at a true crime case in a while, but hearing him describe what that poor dog went through tore my heart to shreds.
OMG!! The paper he wrote about if he was a teacher for a day🤭😂😂😂 I couldn't help it but I burst out laughing 😆🤣
Parents…….love your children a little more each day.
Everyone was waiting for it this season... The Mayhem shirt !
that opening picture is agony just to see. the looks on every one of those kids faces 😢
This happened less than 20 minutes from my school and even though it happened a good bit back, the story of Luke’s actions are still remembered and talked about. Students that attend Pearl take time on the day of the shooting to remember the two girls who passed and the several that were injured.
To the teacher that didn't take the paper he wrote to the Principal should have extra training or something..I mean if that wasn't a huge red flag I don't know what is.. imagine if it led to counseling..but in the end a very troubled kid killed..

It really was not a red flag back then. No one ans I mean no one ever even considered a school shooting. We drove to school with guns on gun rakes in out unlock trucks. It was a totally different world

@@ABeautfulMess it seriously would not have been a red flag in Mississippi. So many of us were rebellious against the up tight Christian mentality of the south. So many of us (even ones u would never expect) would meet up and play with Ouija boards and just say and do crazy shit. Shit that every teacher would say was a red flag now, but none even gave a second glance back then. And hey we all turned out fine 🙂

How did no one do anything after that essay he wrote?! PS Thank you so much for correct subtitles!!
The way he cries is heartbreaking. I heard from my psychologist that this is how little children cry so if adult cries like that it means parental emotional neglect. I am at minute 4 and I don’t know what yet happened but it breaks my heart hearing him sob. Edit. Watched till the end and of course last minutes are spot on. Nothing justifies his actions.

Something VERY similar happened to a teacher of mine a few years ago. My high school teacher was attacked with a stun gun by her adult son, then stabbed horrifically more than 20 times until her death. Her son was a POS and had crazy self entitlement. My teacher was a sweet lady and didn't deserve this. RIP Mrs. Burks. Otay Ranch High isn't the same without you.
His mother had a big part in him becomming a monster
I live in MS and will never forget the day this happened. It seems like this is when we started hearing more and more of school shootings or I either just started paying closer attention since I had a child about to start school.
I graduated High School in 1998 just a couple county’s over from where this took place in Mississippi. It shook the entire state to the core!! What incredible insanity. May God bless all that was involved.
Always good videos . Well thought out and researched . Remember when you were doing those series early on and your channel was a baby . Come a long way … and keep em coming !
You got a shout out on the almost friday podcast!
I’m a bit annoyed that nobody thought that assignment was very much disturbing & that Luke himself was quite disturbed himself.
It’s horrific that he tortured and killed a dog at all, but somehow *worse* that it was his *family* dog. That innocent pup loved and trusted him.
Thank you Jiles~
I graduated high school in 1996. I remember this😢
God, I remember this, I was in first grade in Pearl Elementary when this happened. My step-sister was a high schooler at the time and was friends with Lydia, if I recall. One aspect of this that doesn't get mentioned often is the layout of the school buildings, which was part of why this was so harrowing when it happened-- The elementary, junior high, and high school were all on the same street, with the elementary being directly connected to the junior high. I remember the ENTIRETY of the school system for the town had to be evacuated and it was shut down for a few days... After that the high school moved to a much more secluded location
Great video as always! The interview is so disturbing. What a frickin loser. All the details, his childhood, the bullying blah blah blah. He went for christina. A year later. What an asshole. How infuriating.
That divorce screwed him up big time. It's another case of a guy with blatant warning signs and no one really did anything about it until it was too late.
"I didn't mean to... I just snapped": you wrote it, you're not even a clever destroyer of lives. And you would be despised by Nietzsche: you misquoted him miserably and criminally. The great German thinker rebelled against the oppressive moral systems and DID NOT condone cruelty or crime.
Thank you for omitting the dog murder details. ❤ poor baby😢

Machiavellian word is part of the Movie " MEET JOE BLACK" Brad Pitt is young and very good in this Movie...
OMG...my life was so much worse! I've never hurt anybody...
It’s extremely sad that we can talk about school shootings without surprise anymore 27:15
He’s right. Not insane at all. Just a product of a broken home and no substance to teach him how to feel self assured in the face of bullying and feeling exiled. And while I understand the impacts of abuse and feel sorry for this young man… no one deserved to lose their life as a result of his trauma. Just a waste of intelligence. Knowing he could’ve used his experience to help other youth overcome. Rest in paradise to all who lost their lives.
Love the shirt!
Thanks for the warning about extreme animal abuse in a different clip. I deleted the clip without watching it. Thanks.
The manifesto could have been shortened to: "I did this because Im a selfish coward, who instead of taking the effort of bettering myself, like to attack and murder innocent, defenseless people and blame them for my own shortcomings."
Hope he gets dealt with in prison
