    I actually worked with this guy. He was the manager at a restaurant I worked at a year before he was arrested. Everyone liked him, he was always cool and friendly and got along with everyone. Never any problems or signs at all. Its really creepy how you can never know who people around you really are..

    @@bostonsandatot4948sometimes I question why I enjoy these stories so much. I think it’s mostly the psychological aspect of the criminal that is intriguing, how someone could do these things. Also interesting how some slip through the cracks at first like this guy, and how law enforcement finds who the killer is. I doubt most people enjoy hearing about the details of gore and violence.

    I find it hard to believe his defence’s assertion that brain scans showed he was on the autism spectrum, since there is no physical test to diagnose this complex neurodevelopmental condition at present. Doctors use behaviour, history, and interviews to diagnose ASD. Research is suggesting that, in future, brain scans may be used to diagnose autism, possibly even before behavioral symptoms become apparent, but that is not possible yet.

  • @iaintnoone

    @iaintnoone

    I haven’t seen it yet, but did they mean they tested his brain activity rather than just scanning his brain? I think there is new research to show that certain brain activity differs from that of NT individuals. However, I’ve been out of the psychology field for years (I changed careers) and could be wrong. Also, some autistic “markers” overlap with “markers” for people with other traits that are more likely to associated with serial killers.

    You raise a valid point. While there are ongoing advancements in neuroscience, currently there isn't a definitive physical test for diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Diagnosis relies heavily on behavioral observations, history, and interviews.

    I always appreciate the way in which you discuss a perpetrator’s previous traumas and/or mental illness. Some crime channels lay it on way too thick as a valid excuse and frame it as “poor murderer couldn’t help themself!” While others flip it in the complete opposite direction by saying those factors mean nothing. Your perspective is always so balanced and utilizes nuance to weigh “valid reasons” vs “empty excuse” for each case. So I just wanted to say thank you! Each episode you do is top tier!!

    I just finished a fantastic new book titled “The Rise of the Black Serial Killer” by Justin Cottrell. I’m pretty aware of what’s going on with serial killers, but this was kind of an eye opener to me despite the fact I’ve worked in the field for over 30 years. The book is really educational. It explores why most people assume black serial killers don’t exist - due among many reasons, to media suppression and common misunderstandings. The book offers also a look into why white serial killers are on the decline while black serial killers are on the rise. Learned a lot of new interesting information.

    As someone that has lived in central Florida most of my life, and currently live in the Daytona Beach area, I can tell you a couple things about the area: 1. Although DB has a famous and storied history, with the exception of US92 where the nascar track and major shopping are located, Daytona is a disgusting cesspool. 2. Drug addiction and drug trafficking are one of the worst in the whole state. 3. The police department is still run by good ol’ boys, and isn’t really a major metropolitan police force. So the fact this happened in DB without resolution for so long is really not that surprising. 4. Refer back to #1 - Except for the major tourist traps and some newer residential communities, the rest of the area is nothing short of disgusting and riddled with drugs, prostitution, and an abundance of crime.

    Even if he would’ve gotten a death sentence, he would’ve still sat on death row for who knows how many years. Being as I’ve been to prison, I can tell you, I would rather die than do life behind bars. Therefore I personally feel that his multiple life sentence is worse.

    I don’t know how it actually works in the USA or any state in particular, but I wonder if potential jurors are screened as to whether or not they “believe in the death penalty”. Because I could see deserving people avoiding it simply because a random juror feels nobody should receive that sentencing. But to piggy-back off of that, there is an ever growing support for reform and rehabilitate over simply locking someone away forever. Obviously, many people feel that that is a good thing. But what if someone takes it to the extreme and refuses to ever convict anyone to a life sentence out of moral beliefs ? Is that even a possibility? If anyone knows the answer to my questions, I would appreciate it. Those are just some thoughts I had.

  • @polarbearsaysyummy5845

    In death penalty cases A) The defense attorneys have to be death penalty qualified. B) All jurors have to be willing to sentence a defendant to death. C) The jury has to come to two different decisions. The first guilty or not guilty. If the verdict is guilty, then a separate penalty trial is held. The jury then has to recommend a prison sentence or the death penalty. The Judge makes the final decision. If the jury does not recommend the death penalty, then the Judge cannot impose a death penalty. BUT if the jury recommends death, the judge may or may not be able to sentence to a term of imprisonment.
