The pain and agony of Magnus Carlsen losing to 18-year-old Vincent Keymer

Спорт

@@prometheus_4606 well first off, so far, with me, the above commenter, and the likers of such, there are 5 folks who at least feel the same way about your insinuation, so i'm certainly not some lone wolf in such. but beyond that, sure you're as welcome to feel however you want as much as magnus is welcome to completely obey all the rules and act just how he acts, which is his way and doesn't contain any *necessarily defined* act of disrespect. he wasn't late here but when he is, does it force him more into not over thinking in a way that works for him? did he have explosive diarrhea? does it force something psychologically of the opponent and offer advantage? does it abide in something else we don't know? who knows and who cares, he is ultimately the one who must accept the results of such. but by all rubrics he's wayy more possessing of social manner, non-primma donna 'tude, and formal respect, in the arena, press, and between-life than most of the world champs have displayed, esp some of the cocky russian ones.

Fantastic performance by Keymer, no question. He's an exceptional athlete in chess, a great guy to boot. But let's say what happened and what is the biggest enemy of a player of Magnus' stature with the corresponding consequences, who for the last few years has been toiling only in such arenas : he got bored. It's not arrogance. It's a lack of motivation. It has announced it itself in the years before. And you just have to forgive such a great player, who lives his whole life in this 8x8 matrix. Vincent can't believe it himself at 15:04. At some point, when you've won everything and made history, the deadliest of all thoughts creeps up inside you: why all this? It's a question of meaning. And it's up to Carlson's level to draw the consequences. My thanks and respect to both players. By the way, I think that Nb3 was not a blunder, but simply a mistake. Great commentary. If you close your eyes, it could also be a boxing match ;-)

I think Nb3 is a blunder at GM level because it led to a decisive endgame for white. For lower rated players, sure, you might label it an innacuracy/mistake

It was a blunder. If it was out of boredom, it makes no difference. It’s no different than if it was out of tiredness or a lack of concentration. Doesn’t matter. He blundered and his opponent made him pay for it. Obviously that blunder holds no bearing over Magnus as a chess player. Blunders happen because nobody is perfect. Not even Magnus.

at minute 15 36, i would play king to E7, lots of options after, could of given magnus a win, just by playing the king, forcing a check by vincente or breaking vincentes strategy, on wich vincente could rush a check on magnus king, resolving in a dead night then magnus pushing the tower to b1 to defend the pawn for a queen or bait vincente tower. Or, i would play at the same 15m and 36 sec, a push from magnus tower to b1 with intention of pushing that tower of vincents away or again baiting his tower, with magnus pawn by pushing it to b6, or his night to E6. Just my opinion.

fyi in case you didnt know now and for people curious- because after the black knight takes pawn with check, white and black trade off each others passed pawns in the b and d file. after that it turns into a rush to get to the advanced f/g pawns which black will win because his king is closer. then when the white king does catch up he has whats called a backward f pawn that will have no chance of promoting. i figure that was the extent of the calculation they were doing, cause it seems like a basic endgame. high level gms grind a lot of different endgame scenarios and there are certain positions which are well known draws.

You can tell more about Keymer's ability in closing minutes. Calling it blunder but the position is such you have nothing but dogfights. 18 you have to figure he starts playing around five to beat Carlson. He went for it, didn't mess around. You wonder at that level how much is poker because that's exactly how you go about that. Ability to train now is probably different then any time in history, and you wonder if the best should only play blitz in tournament, regardless of not making best moves. It might be at that point.
