The Other Catamaran

Ғылым және технология

Jeff from Xcel Marine gives a lesson on catamaran structural bulkheads. This tour was very helpful in terms of knowing where bulkheads need to be and which of the original Iroquois internal walls need to go back in.
There should be bulkheads where the front and rear walls of the main cabin are. This turns the cabin into a giant box-beam that holds the pontoons rigidly parallel. None of the other walls are structural. Hopefully.
Seeing the other boat has inspired me to make an indoor shower and flushing toilet on the Iroquois eventually.
Rich is in the process of painting the interior of the Iroquois with white gelcoat. It looks a lot brighter in there, although the walls look a lot rougher now that there is enough light to really see them. Fortunately, most will be covered with cabinets by the time the boat is done.

Nice boat! Always good to see other boats and get new ideas. And perhaps notice mistakes that were made and be able to avoid them on your own boat.

The tour and lesson was supposed to be about structural supports and where they need to go, but I got more excited about ideas for interior design once I was in there. Originally I planned a very open space like Trevor had. After the tour, a bathroom with a shower and flush toilet sounds nice, as does the idea of a cabin door and space to stand up and get dressed by the two rear berths. A new floor plan for the Iroquois.

At first I thought my boat could never look this nice because the fiberglass is so rough. Then I realised none of the fiberglass I see inside my boat is visible in this one. here I see the front of cabinets whose back side is the rough fiberglass hull I see in my boat. All the nicely finished surfaces are cabinets and arbitrarily placed room divider walls. I hadn't really gotten that part until I saw the other boat..

Its strange how we can live in a boat like this but a house this size would be regarded as small.

That is somewhat similar to my Gemini 105M that you might want to look at for another reference.

I looked at a Gemini thinking I might use that instead of the Iroquois. I don't know what model it was. It was a nicer boat, with standing room in the main cabin instead of the hobbit house on the Iroquois. The standing room made it too high for the bridge going to my house even with the masts taken off. I already knew this one fit through the bridge when I bought it.

Catamarans are better than conventional sailboats, more living space.

Ever since I saw a live aboard catamaran, I have been impressed with that wide room that bridges between the two pontoons. All other boats are so narrow by comparison.

Not really they are wider. You would get more space in the ultimate monohull, my favourite, the Lemsteraak.
