How did I break my femur bone?

Ғылым және технология

I wore flipflop shoes and had a cluttered house. I tripped over clutter and fell against the coffee table. My life was saved because my phone happened to be where I fell. I normally didn't keep the phone in my pocket. I intend to get a life-alert pendant when I go home. Its that "I've fallen and can't get up" thing. Those can save lives. There was no way I could move after the break. When I tried, my leg just flopped over like it wasn't connected to anything. It hurt so much they gave me fentanyl in the ambulance and that didn't cut the pain at all. The only relief was when they knocked me out for surgery.
I get physical therapy twice a day and exercise as much as they let me after therapy. The doctors told me about half of the people with an injury like mine will walk out of here and half get wheeled out. I work at therapy 110% because I need to walk and keep my balance on a boat pitching around in high seas.
Another patient wants to go with me on the boat, but he is older than me, and also has a long way to go before he can walk. He is retired, so he is the only person I know who can take two or three months off to go with me.
I came up with a plan to see if we are well enough to go on the boat. I plan to take the boat through the locks into Port Canaveral where there is clean ocean water. I will rent a dock space for a day. There is a guy at the boatyard who weighs 300 pounds and can lift at least 250. We will have him along and each of us will go in the water and attempt to climb the ladder back onto the boat. If either of us can't climb out, my friend can pull us out. If the other old guy can't get himself back on the boat, he can't go. If I can't climb back on the boat I don't go. This is deadly serious. If he can't get back aboard, I can throw him a float on a rope and call for rescue, but it may be a long time before rescue arrives. I don't want to tell his family he was eaten by predators or drowned while tied to the boat and awaiting rescue.
It will be a long time before I can drive the boat. This summer is lost, but I will have recovered as much as I am going to recover by next summer.
And thats just it for now

Thanks, there are a lot of other people here with similar injuries. Just a couple of them and I are gung-ho on our therapy, leading me to believe we will be among the ones who walk out of here.

I remember you from comments on making fiberglass spheres. Thanks for the advice on that. I'd still like to discuss having you fabricate some parts if you are interested. Sorry to hear about your rough spots in life. Healing and walking again are my main goals for now.

I didn't know how you built that boat dock in those flip flops. I'd have been in the water. So you keep up the accelerated physical therapy, and find some sensible shoes. And get well enough to walk out of there. We'll be here, when you're ready.

Thanks! The flip flops are good sand shoes, but I got some sketchers which let me shove my feet into them without tying laces. They stay on real good until I force them off.

Thanks! I am glad I was near the phone as well. There is no way I could have moved from where I was. I actually spent a while trying to disbelieve what had happened before breaking down and dialing 911.

Glad you're on the mend! Jim, you have to be careful! It's easy to get hurt. Slipping, tripping and stumbles .... stairs, shower rooms with wet floors, washing feet and not getting all the soap removed before putting feet back on the shower floor!!!

So good to see your happy fuzzy face.😀 I see determination in your spirit that will take you to your goal. Take this time to work on the upper body as well. With a little effort any one of us can look better than Arnold Schwarzenegger. That upper body strength will help you climb that ladder back into that boat. 💪 Group Hug.

Thanks! Not sure if I will look like Ahhhnold, but I am getting stronger every day. I can already do the asian squat and pick myself up from the floor, so the ladder is definitely possible. Its a deadly serious test. Anyone unable to climb back onto the boat from the water, simply cannot go

When I was young dangerous stuff was cars that went over 100mph, playing with guns, and pretty girls with with big boy friends. Now dangerous stuff is flip flops/crocs, throw rugs, and wet tile. I have about given up on standing in a rocking boat. Speedy recover to you. Once I had someone who could not climb back aboard a the boat so she stood on the cavitation plate on the motor, then we raised the trim/tilt on the motor and she was able to step into the splashwell. Not ideal, but worked in a pinch.

Thanks for the advice about using the motor tilt as a lift to get a stranded swimmer back on the boat. Those words could save another life one day. Don't give up on the standing on a rocking boat. There is too much enjoyment to be had on a boat. We will both make it!

My opinions, for what they're worth: 1. Look into Condroitin-Sulfate supplements to rebuid bone and cartilage - Jello is a cheap substitue 2. Exercise to build quadricep strength and body build to keep all parts of the body strong and elastic 3. Work to improve your flexibility to loosen up and resist getting stiffer that you have allowed your body to become 4. Never give up! You were born for the seas and adventure!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers!

Thanks for the encouragement. I think my femur was only broken in one place, where the 90 degree bend is before the hip socket. I hope you get full use of your leg back. The harder you work in therapy, the more likely you will recover fully, or as close to it as possible. Never give up! I regret trading my MacGregor 26X for the catamaran, but I needed the stability of the cat to support my solar experiment. I hope to buy another 26-X again one day. It was the best boat I ever owned.
