While I agree that it is good for parents to allow their children to decide *some* things for themselves, there is certainly a time and place for such things. Children very often don't know enough to make good decisions for themselves, and at a young age shouldn't be expected to. No five year old should be making life altering decisions for themselves. Fifteen isn't even truly adequate for such decisions without guidance from someone actually interested in their long-term success in life and not pushing detrimental choices due to ideology. Of course this episode was referring to people pushing sex change operations upon children, which frankly is barbaric and criminal. No one should be opting for elective life altering surgeries until well into adulthood. Certainly no child or even teenager should be. In the case of this episode of course, we're dealing with someone who was unnaturally altered in infancy simply wanting to restore what was taken. We're *not* talking about an elective permanent bodily alteration *to* something unnatural, as we're dealing with in real life today. That distinction is critical in arguing the morality of a minor making such a decision. Topa in the story is electing to be what she was naturally born, not choosing to try to become something unnatural other than what she actually is. Children choosing for themselves can be beneficial for positive development, but only when it's something suitable for the time and place. No responsible parent would allow their child to eat nothing but candy and cake for their meals, no matter how much the kid might want to. We recognize that it's ridiculous and very unhealthy, where the child wouldn't. That dichotomy is present in a plethora of other potential choices made either by or for children.

@@odisseusrh Discovery will always be shit and so will all the other after 2005 you can add nice things to a turd but its still a turd
I don't watch this show, but I damn sure recognize good acting! Especially through makeup prosthetics.
This episode is near and dear to me. Years ago I was in a toxic and an emotional abusive relationship. Anyway you slice it Klyden was an abuser. When Brotus breaks down it struck home. I've been to that level of helplessness. The performance was so well done it brought me to tears.
The sheer shackling of his emotion is just heart wrenching. Dude played the role with astonishing skill
In the first few seasons I wasn’t all that big a fan of Bortus and the Moclans. They just seemed like a less ingesting krogan and Klingon. After this season I still don’t like the Moclans but bortus has finally grown on me. I see less of a emotionless rock, and a father that despite his flaws All he wants is the best for his child, despite what his culture says is best.
I've been seeing this show clips on KZread for a while now, i love bortus and this is the first time I'm seeing him cry. 😢❤
Peter Macon just giving us that... "I am fully stotic and in contorl" with it just... starting to boil over? So good. He went big, by going small.
This show is so amazing... From funny to heart breaking in a second.... This is soooooo good...
Bortus gave Topa the password. Topa was directed to a file by Kelly that would reveal the gender change he was put through. Bortus found out that he'd seen the file and supplied the password. They both wanted Topa to know, against the wishes of Klyden and Moclan culture.

Yeah that should not matter. TOPA HAD EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN RIGHT TO LIVE HER LIFE AS THE GENDER SHE WAS BORN AS. I swear to god I HATE the Moclans with a burning passion now that I realized what sexist idiots they truly are. How the absolute FUCK they stayed in the Union as long as they did with their CLEAR disregard for what is (or absolutely SHOULD be) Union laws on gender identity is a complete mystery to me.

Bortus saw what his child needed and he didn't think he did what was best for the child. in this clip he sees his child injured and goes to town on the monster who hurt her. He may not be a perfect parent but hes a good father
I started this show for the funny space hyuks and now I'm crying.
You know, Bortus really reminds me of G'Kar from Babylon 5. A character that at first was kind of written as comic relief, and goofy, and fairly 2 dimensional. But over the course of the show, with good writing, and fantastic work from the actor, becomes an emotional powerhouse for the show.
Klyden was born female. Which makes his rejection of Topa worse 😢

@@jeremydale4548 don’t know if it’s hypocritical, wrong certainly, but if you apply the same metrics to others as you do to yourself, then it’s not hypocrite, to give Klyden’s perspective on the situation(please don’t crucify me,I’m just giving more context to this😅): someone was born with a culturally reviled “deformation” and although they went through surgery to remove it they’re still deeply disturbed by knowing it so they double down on their hostility against said deformation and try to spare their child from going through the same trauma, in their heads they’re doing what they wanted someone to do for them(notice how their first reaction isn’t to attack Topa, but to deny and then console him, because in his head Topa would be ashamed of it)

I believe part of why it hit Klyden so hard, is that Topa was like himself, born female but changed to male as an infant. But Topa found the courage to face her truth and the scorn from her society, and make herself who she really is. Klyden never could.

Look everybody blames Klyden but Klyden grew up knowing the truth and all his neighbors, family and probably strangers knew. Everyone knowing the she wasn't a real boy might have made him grow up being teased, mocked or bullied. So Klyden probably views the secret as something she would have wish she grew up with. In her case

He has wanted tell who she really is but klyden was stubborn as hell
If anything happens to Klyden I could see these two as a couple.
I havent seen an episode, the only thing Ive seen is "I have an egg." and now this. That first voicecrack broke my heart and makes me want to check it out... i hope season 4 continues it.
Honestly, as sad as Boris is, I love this. It shows that he has a range of emotion, and that he isn’t just some stoic silence strong type. And it really shows the depths of his love for his kid.
This IMO is the best episode of the Orville so far...
Shame there is no plan for further episodes.
Dammit! Now my eyeliner is a mess and I need to blow my nose!
Bortus is easily my favorite character on this show. Holy shit. I dont even know where to begin with how awesome he is.
Life is made of choices, some good some evil. You just deal with it.
Damn the writing is good. I could feel the pain he was in. I hope they have a fourth season
This is not on topic at all - but at 1:14. Imagine coming home from your day at work and that is the view that is presented to you from the window when you come home.
Good show. Good actors. Good storyline.
Wow this guy is a good actor.
Command staff quarters should include an anteroom office immediately inside the front door so if someone comes to their quarters in business, it can be handled in their small anteroom office rather than their actual quarters.
Topa and Bortus are my favorite characters. In fact every character was written perfectly. I love this show so much and I hate it only got four seasons.
Bortus is the equivalent of humans and our reaction to modern day, but with the perspective (atleast now) of someone whos affected by it
Topa, not Klyden. Klyden is Bortus' husband. Topa is their child.
I’m seriously considering getting Apple TV just so I can binge watch this series

Feeling helpless as a parent when your child is going through tough times... not a situation one wants to be in, but I'm sure many parents experience it at some point.

All of The Orville was excellent, but New Horizons was so, so far above and beyond in every way including the writing, the music, the acting, the pacing, the VFX, and the overall tone (and probably lots of other things). They did not fuck around, and it is just a huge gift!
