One thing I like about this? Kelly doesn't condemn Bortus for what he's done. She just tells him to stand down, and when he does, they leave. His standard is to be more than just a Moclan but a Union Starfleet officer. That interrogator is lucky to live. Actually I believe that it was in the same eye that had been destroyed before. So whilst Bortus was willing to do considerable amount of damage to the interrogator. It might have been damaging and causing equal pain to him. But it was proportional. Bortus might have considered doing as was described by someone else. And take out the other eye. Doing significant amount of damage to the same area where the eye had been lost. Would have done hefty damage to the front parital lobes. Thus Bortus certainly would have inflicted it. As a clear warning to the Moclan Government. But wouldn't have taken it further. Proportional damage... Yes! Dis-proportionate.. No!!

Kind of reminds me of something from "The Dresden Files." When Harry Dresden's daughter was kidnapped by The Red Court of Vampires she was meant to be the sacrifice to a bloodline curse that would kill Harry and his Grandfather, a hitman wizard. But in the end not only did Harry save his daughter but he eradicated the Red Court. Later that was specifically pointed out by Micheal Carpenter, a retired holy knight. "Harry the Red Court took your daughter. After that you went after her and walked away with her in your arms and an entire race of vampires extinct. I think you set the bar pretty high for what happens to people who come after her."

Kelly again proved herself to be the most sensible senior crew member of the ship. It's one thing to take extremely violent actions, it's something else altogether to take a life. Kelly knew right away that Bortus would goddamn kill that guy, even right in front of Topa, if she didn't order him to stand down as soon as he started laying the beat down.

  • @BlazingOwnager

Hard disagree. Kelly's unwillingness to put him down exposed the female Mocclan's frequencies, intelligence network and sympathizer who was helping getting girls off the planet. Putting him down would have saved countless lives. The high ground cost many innocents lives and it would not surprise me in the slightest if there's a season 4 that this comes around to be a plot point.

@@BlazingOwnager To quote Ed in this situation. 'Do not advertise tactical opportunism as pious morality!' Just how many times has such rhetoric been brought up in whatever situation when the other side seems to gain an advantage of some kind? hell, in case you've forgotten, such exploitation of tactical opportunism was what got them all in that mess in the first place, with Heveena enlisting Topa's help despite such a motion being apparently ethically unsound. that same adherence to tactical opportunism would have easily led her to leave Topa to her own device, denying everything before the council, & there wouldn't have been the expulsion of Moclus that followed. the colony also wouldn't have been recognized as a sovereign state by the Union & placed under Union protection. One could only call one's core values as core values when one is ready to defend & adhere to such values even in adversity. if one were to be so ready to exploit any kind of tactical opportunity without regard for one's values, again in Ed's words, 'what exactly are we defending?' sure, such a course of action would come with the probability of undesirable consequences, but there wouldn't be a Planetary Union in the first place, when one's so ready to kill just because not doing so comes with the risk of losing one's standing in anything, would it now? Furthermore, although Kelly & Ed are personally supportive of Heveena's revolution, her fight ultimately is hers & her colony's, NOT the Union's. to so readily seize a tactical advantage at the expense of the values that one & one's organization hold for someone else's fight, would not only reflect badly on Kelly's professionalism, but also what the Planetary Union embodies. & finally, those who're involved in such clandestine operations, Heveena especially, ain't stupid. she, & by extension, her people, would immediately know that their operation was compromised the second she realized that Topa was taken by the Moclan black-ops. countermeasures of any kind would have been employed before word got out of the mouth of the damned inquisitor, & their tracks would have already been covered by the time the Moclans looked into it. killing the inquisitor would, as such, be ENTIRELY UNNECESSARY. sure, it would slow their operation somewhat & cause fewer females to be saved in time, but Heveena would be the one to be blamed for her callousness & desperation, NOT Kelly or the Planetary Union in general.

@@BlazingOwnager Clearly you didn't finish reading what i wrote. what you said Kelly should do is again i stress, ENTIRELY UNNECESSARY, so short answer, NO, this AIN'T one of those times. hell, even the eradication of the Kaylon would be more compelling than Kelly letting Bortus kill the inquisitor, despite the fact that it's genocide vs killing just one guy, if for nothing else than the very utilitarian point of the chances of the Kaylon eventually learning enough about the weapon & defending against it, thus biting the Union back big time, being FAR HIGHER than the chances of the Moclan government being able to make good use of what that inquisitor managed to pry out of Topa.

Actually she didn't They were rescuing a victim from interrogation and didn't know what information had been divulged. The sensible thing to do would be to kill both in order to save other lives and reduce the risk of information getting out. Not doing so could/would/did cost lives and, let's face it, the evidence to morally justify such an execution was bleeding in her arms.
