The Old Man's Garage "Cracka Barrel" Chevy Malibu stops by for front end Chassis Setup work!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Well you've seen the Street Racing Channel S10, and the Nova, and the Falcon, in our shop and on the alignment rack but this is a new one for us it's time to work on The Old Man's Garage Malibu and do some suspension work! The last time we had this car in the shop we were trying desperately to get the tiny 10 bolt Chevy rear end to stay together, this time we're doing some upgrades on the front end to help with lift weight transfer and running down the track.
Bill has brought us a host of parts to install, new taller upper balljoints, Moroso Trick Springs, new braided steel brake lines from Jegs, and a UMI Performance Bump Steer Kit. From what we've all seen on video, and from the very obvious wear on the front tires, some of these upgrades are desperately needed!
For those people who DON'T know this car, it's a 1979 Chevy Malibu "Ice Cream Getting Special", still retaining Air Condition, Power Steering, and Power Brakes. It still a full interior car, and in INCREDIBLE condition. While the motor has seen a serious upgrade over recent months to a very health 421ci small block Chevy it still maintains its cruiser and driver status. Very very cool car and something Bill and Vicki are both very proud of and enjoying, and rightly so.
For those interested in the part numbers of what we are working with

Easy to straighten the steering wheel. You toe the high side in an low side out equal amounts. It looked to me about a half turn each side. Toe stays the same .
I'm surprised that Malibu and trailer doesn't bounce you around in that nice c10, did I hear you say that the rear wheels of the truck come off the ground when u load? Good day Bill,I'm a old man also love the Malibu. The only thing that I see in your videos that I see and drives me crazy is I'm crazy about details. If you would please get krylon Kenny to paint the hood latch black and not the color of the hood. As a person that has painted and detailed cars for years. The hood release or latch should be black. Sorry if I'm just being picky but everything else on the car I agree on. But please get krylon Kenny to paint it 🙏 thanks keep up the great content 👍.
For some reason when I see you I think of bill laimbeer.
i had a 79 elco when i was learning caster the old man at work was teaching me position of ball joints forward and backward to get your caster right and i left shop still not understanding so stopped at beer store got a case of beer went home started drinking staring at my front end on my elco and picturing what he said that day and after case i figured it out lol next day done a 69 camero all new front end new everything i can say that was dead on best one i ever done canber 0ed out both side caster perfect with a neg 50 split for crown in road but its the proudest of all my alignments of my career

Bill explained there is a trick that Rich does with the brakes to really minimize the drag.. what exactly is being done to achieve that?
Rich, how do you stop the front discs from "dragging"? What's the secret to the free spinning modification that you did to Bill's brakes?

Where's the brake trick!!!😫
Love to watch your videos would like to see your trick how are you keep the brake pad away from the rotor
Hey guys I came over from the old man’s garage channel and I was very curious on the trick to make the front wheels spin so freely. I am struggling with dragging brakes on my c10 and wondering if you could give any tips to make them like bills… lol… I saw in your video here that you tap the brake clips to make them tight… is that all it takes? I believe mine are tight but I could be wrong… thanks in advance!
I feel like he should have replaced the front tires before you did the alignment

Lol that's probably not going to be hard to talk him into with one or two more issues 😉
What was the trick to make the brakes not drag??
Noticed you did alignment with wear on front tires...all the shops here in KC say it is impossible to do proper alignment, caster, camber, and toe in with worn tires...have not had any work done by any of them.
@LucoreAuto
Жыл бұрын
Ideally yes you would do an alignment dial in with brand new tires, it doesn't make a HUGE difference on front runners like these but it does make a difference. We can compensate for that as we are setting the specs. In this case it also helps to visualize the issues this car was having. Nothing shows an alignment issue quite as well!
You probably already know but if your out of shims and you needed more camber moof used to make an offset upper shaft where you could add shims back in it

I realize that bill has given you somewhat of a recipe for disaster LOL not really you need to make sure that you take a chisel and a hammer and have someone stand on the brakes and knock the outer aisle it down over the couch so that holds it to it then it won't clap and it will release and Free Will under heat if that pad gets caught they could easily stop the motion of release and then make the caliper overheated and it will just stay stuck and on all the time as you know I learned that from raybestos class that I've gone to more than one of them but anyway I just thought I would mention it of course everybody has an opinion and this is mine I believe I have the right to it so I hope you're not offended
Curious , will replace big the springs change the alignment ? Or do you have to realign after swapping a different set in ? Awesome videos as always .

I have some experience with doing alignment I am not an expert but doing an alignment with tires that I wore out did not sound like a good idea

Well, ain't much of a mod, but I crimp the ears of the outer pad tight enough to require squeezing them into place, clean the slider pins spotless and use silicone based brake lube on them, and verify the pistons move into the caliper bores VERY easily. Basic GM brake job stuff.

I have a question and hope it’s not stupid. Whenever I have had a car that was wearing the tires, I was told to put new tires on before a new alignment. Just wondering thanks for the videos. Hello from Oklahoma.
@LucoreAuto
Жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question at all. Ideally yes we would do the alignment with a brand new set of tires but this helps everyone truly see and understand the issues and we can compensate for when new tires are on it as we set up the alignment. Definitely not a stupid question.

As a mechanic, i was always taught that the tire has no bearing on not being able to align a vehicle because it goes off the rim. As long as all your moving parts have no movement in them then it shouldnt matter if the tire is worn.
And yes I understand that bill is only trying to get too much done too fast he did take the time to bring you some parts some worked out and some did not I understand all that
So what was done to make front rotors spin freely?
@moodybluemotorsportsDwneKnos
Жыл бұрын
With the caliper and pads on and bolted down use something to apply pressure making the pad on the outside tight against the caliper and force the pad guides down against the caliper so that the pad will not move or rattle , that's how to adjust freewheel spin and also keeps the pads from being so tightly against the rotor moreless all your doing is same as valve lash but with rotor and pads ,,does that make sense? Kinda hard to explain but hope you understand what I'm meaning.
@mikesmallwood3979
Жыл бұрын
I used springs to separate the pressure from brake pads to rotor.

I know some model cars use springs aka pad spreaders from factory, I guess I'll find a universal kit to apply to a car I have.
