Its ironic, but the Bunker is probably up there for me as the best amnesia game, along with the second one. Its not only the gun - a way to scare monster away for just a few moments - its a tool for many obstacles in game. A tool you have to be wise not to use too much and game teaches you that. Its not first person 'shooter' if you are allowed to shoot it no more than 20 times during 1 playthrough xd

Dunno, Alien had a gun and a flamer but they were ineffektive against the xenomorph, taking away nothing of the tension and dread whenever it appears. Horror can work with guns, just show the player that they are not the hunter but the hunted.

See I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum, I think you can give a person a weapon or way to defend themselves but limit the ammo or make it about strategic thought while panicking with monsters. That can be way scarier than “ok there’s a wardrobe over there, I’ll grab what I need in this room and hide in there for a second.” It makes them feel ironically more helpless with a weapon if they think “should I use it here, or will there be something worse later on?”

@@bilbonob548 Then why did I feel more genuine fear from BLOODBORNE of all things than I ever did with Amnesia? Why did all the recent resident evil games provide so much more tension for me than any of the amnesia games? You can keep telling me how much “scarier” a hide and seek game like this is, but it won’t change the fact that it’s not scary to me. 🤷‍♂️ Limited ammo and carrying space and properly paced and placed obstacles can be far more effective in building tension. You know you have to think constantly, which can lead to paranoia. Also you are not helpless in Amnesia, there are conveniently placed dressers in nearly every room.

@@stingerjohnny9951 Every single one of those games you listed is not remotely scary. You have the same concept of horror as someone who thinks gore + monsters = horror. Those aren't scary. I'm starting to think you haven't played the games if you think there's closets everywhere to hide in. The whole point is FINDING somewhere to run to or hide in. Hence... Fear. You give your character a gun to simply shoot or hack away with and you're left with an action adventure game with a goth rebranding.

This game made me throw my controller at my tv so hard that it pushed the tv into the drywall and collapsed it onto the dog in the next room.

I came here just looking for some low sanity effect footage to show to a friend but I'm so glad I found this video. At the end I felt as if I watched an hour long video but you somehow managed to put so much information in 10 minutes it's honestly impressive. And 5:21 🅱️ONELESS took me tf out, I love the Baku series, easily subbed just for this

The first note itself is enough to give you chills, a shadow, an entity you know nothing about following you is terrifying in itself

Man this game was indie horror childhood together with cry of fear Also the sanity system is really cool actually..just one thing (however it isn't sure, might need to correct me) Daniel health system here works similar to some games (like the evil within) where your health will only very barely regenerates enough for you to start seeing normally, now to get the full health again just with items.

Dude the nostalgia is strong. I remember playing this game for the first time, I was absolutely terrified from the very begining, but the prison level was too much for me to handle, and then the choir absolutely destroyed me :D I needed to quit the game several times because of sheer terror it caused. The impact this game has on the industry and today's youtube is enormous. True masterpiece.

Ironically, they added a gun in the new amnesia. But it's more like the "weapons" from alien isolation rather than cod or whatever.

I don’t care and I’m not afraid to admit this… This game scared the shit out of me! I’m 36, don’t play a lot of horror games, but this one got me! It got me real good! There were moments I had pause and put the controller down because I was so tense from being scared. The best part… I’m not done with it, and I have Justine and “A machine for pigs” as part of the bundle. After those I’m gonna play “rebirth” too!! I also have SOMA to play!

Soma is more story based but the few times the monsters spawn are nightmares. Also theres giant enemy fish in the game

I've played a lot of horror games over the last decade and A:TDD is the ONLY game I've ever played that scared me so much that I had to keep taking month-long breaks from it before I finally beat it. Everything about its design is horrifying and I absolutely love it.

It's funny I always knew that you would hallucinate in this game but I never actually did even when being quite insane for long periods of time. The fact that you showed what kind of hallucinations someone might see in the game when this happens (like the painting morphing) was really great. I had no idea.

Daniel's voice actor was my chemistry teacher in highschool.

I loved this game so much, I got every achievement for it. All 18 of them, find every tinderbox, find all notes, beat the game on hard difficulty, all of them.

I have never been into Horror games or even horror movies, but Amnesia is the only game that really sold me on it. The horror is incredibly well executed and paced. The atmosphere in this game is the best I've ever experience and the story is great too. I've never ever felt a game being so immersive as this. I recommend this to anyone even if you're not into horror like myself.

0:24 guns are really well designed in horror tbh. Like, yes, it makes you a bit more brave, for short burst. But tasting the power, and get it ripped from you by your own choices, is far more terrifying than never having. So the scarcity factor makes alot of horror games way better, in my opinion

it is definitely out there with amnesia in terms of stress and can be scary but not more scary than amnesia because dead space tries to achieve something more than making the player piss his pants (as a gameplay), tbh a comparison between those games is kinda dumb on his behalf

Besides of this game being OG, they even released full source code for free.

this game is so good that despite knowing it damn well (its my comfort game that I entirely played once or twice) I still get stressed and spooked, sometimes getting stuck in one place because of how scared I am

Even with a gun, I still end up screwing up in a horror game more often than not-not through overcompetence, but putting far too many rounds into or outright missing a target. Or just a straight up twitchy trigger finger...resulting in me wasting rounds.

I think that Daniel’s ending is the canon one, It’s the only one where the monsters are freed. After Daniel gives the shadow Alexander, the Shadow lets Daniel leave, and as soon as he does the Castle collapses. Agrippa is the only one who wins in his ending because Daniel gets killed and probably turned into a wraith or ghoul

I remember this, I had to put on the Benny Hill Theme to not be freaked out too much when the monster was chasing me!

Still one of my favorite horror games. Sure, it's VERY scripted, but the story, atmosphere, chases, hiding was all fun... well depends on how we describe fun. It definitely could drag me in, feeling like I am Daniel. The story had amazing, dark elements. Loved it. And yes, the lack of intentional jump scares were a great choice. The low difficulty of the game actually helped a lot to make it immersive. I have some bad experiences with horror games where the immersion is completely ruined by cheap deaths, restarting areas, etc... I died twice in the original Amnesia, once by monster, once by falling... oof... Mikko Tarmia's soundtrack for the game is a MASTERPIECE. It affects the player so much. That plus the amazing sound design, interactive world. Excellent.

I Completeld Amnesia the Dark Descent some few years ago and it was terrifying, I was scared like all the time and I was so afraid to even do anything because the game simply just terrified me and often times when I was running away in panic in the game, I WAS BREATHING DEEP IN PANIC IRL AS WELL Hahahah Amnesia is my favorite horror game, it's incredible

The gatherers looked very goofy and the kaernk doesn't have any appearance at all, this game is scary for the obvious sound design, and its inherent yet masterful jank

I think guns can work in horror games if done right. In Alien: Isolation for example, you're given a decent variety of guns and weapons, but they couldn't kill the monster at all, therefore you'd have a sense of helplessness when the alien chases you (especially when you don't have many items to distract or temporarily stop the alien)
