Because he was trying to impress the girls. You even see one shot of him looking sad as he sees his mother in a cage... WHO IS RIGHT BEHIND HIM! as he cuts the ropes off the girl. He switches because of his guilt and his mother.

The original story of Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" if I recall correctly is on st John's night, the devil and his minions emerge from Bald Mountain and celebrate until morning. Maybe Disney gave it that name for political constructiveness or w/e reason, but as far as story goes, this is supposed to be Satan...

While that's probably the explanation, i have a different "theory": that whole scene was supposed to represent anti-paganism. Creature in movie is Chernabog, who is pagan god, and he gets defeated when church bells and "Ave Maria" are heard, basically just how Christianity destroyed paganism. I also think that is one of the reasons why "Fantasia" was considered controversial when it came out.

I have Asperger's syndrome and I wasn't too bothered by the joke (I even laughed a little) but I can understand why some would be offended and uncomfortable about it. And in all honesty, there are much worse people out there who throw the word 'autistic' around as an insult and actually bully people on the spectrum for no discernible reason other than them being autistic. I do have to respect Doug for owning up and apologising for it though and explaining himself for making the joke.

Dear Mr. Critic. Im autistic and personally i was not offended. I then took the clip to my autistic freinds. Over 15 different autistic people watched the clip and most laughed at it. Engineers, Doctors, Programmers and Nurses. It appears Autistic people in general dont understand why its considered offensive. Yes im a computer programmer, but God Damn, I like me a good puppet show. People who get offended are rarely the party who the offense was meant for. I actually wish there were MORE autistic Jokes, I mean jokes Normalise it, Everyone else gets made fun of... why cant we? Autistic Trains of Thought are more akin to feel included by the joke at their expense. and lets face it Autism is pretty danm funny. Example: When i was little my mom was teaching me how to tie my shoes... I didnt want to learn and conviced a freind to tie them for me. When my mom asked "did you tie them by yourself?" I said "yes" TWENTY YEARS LATER, a young adult aproaching 30 has an almost daily ritual of Convincing strangers to his shoes. Iv been getting people to tie my shoes for over two danm decades, becuse i never learned to tie my shoes........ Heres the punchline..... it also took me 20 years to realise, not all shoes have laces.. i now wear slip on shoes...... So please, tell the soccer moms to shove it up there asses. Tell the defensive dad to fuck himself. Becuse People with autism hate being left out, more than anything. Oh and you Vaccine people can go to hell, im a person not a defect. Saying Vaccines cause autism, is as offensive as calling your Black uber driver "boy". Final Thoughts Critic, Good move apologising for the War hounds would have eaten you, but Know as an Autistic adult, I officially Endorse the Joke.

In his list of upcoming videos in 2010, but he just felt they were both too underwhelming to make a good "old vs new". I think if I had to choose between the "War Of The Worlds" films, I'd probably go with the Tom Cruise one. It's not saying much, but I thought the characters were slightly less bland, probably thanks to having great actors like Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning and the master director Steven Spielberg, and there seemed to be a little more of a story than just people running from aliens, with the backstory of the divorced dad looking after his sullen son and smartass daughter and trying work with them to get to safety. Although I did find the spaceships in the 1953 pretty creepy. And even the distengrating effect looked more slow and painful on the people even though it seemed more fake.
