The NEW Truth about Living in Boulder | How is it changing in 2021?

Living in Boulder, Colorado is truly unlike living in any other place. And since I made my video "The Truth about Living in Boulder, Colorado" I've felt that enough changes have taken place that I need to make an updated version of it. So today I present you with the NEW truth about living in Boulder! How is it changing in 2021?
If you haven't seen the original "truth about living in Boulder" video I highly suggest you do that first for context. I also go into much deeper detail on the problems that exist in a community like Boulder. Here's the link to that video: • The truth about living...
If you're thinking about moving to Colorado or moving to Boulder specifically I hope this video is helpful for you! Thanks for having this "coffeeshop chat" with me today. 🤠

I spent six months in Boulder in 1986 and fell in love with the town. Alas, everything changes, and it seems the more people find out about a great place, the worse it ends up with time.

You nailed this coffee shop chat a 100% girl! 😉 I like the sense of humor & honesty in your videos! 💙 Don't feel bad @ the previous video ~ you are just putting out a content/your experience but you are not responsible for `people's choice making`! Like in this video you are so grateful to live in a beauty of nature in Boulder... and I think we are all the same in this way ~ sometimes we love and sometimes we hate what we have or live & sometimes we realize that our circumstances are not so bad after all! 😏 Have a wonderful Sunday! 🥰

We (fam of 4) are flying to CO this week to visit for 4 days and visit a graduate program at Naropa. I’ve been anxious about all the cons that you coincidentally spoke to in your last video. You didn’t discourage as much as you addressed the stereotypes I already feared. But *this* one has touched me and given me hope. It’s perfectly normal for any place to have a shadow side, but I love that you and the general vibe you were feeling are of processing more openly. That’s the exact direction I want to go and this was great. Thank you ❤

Boulder is a gateway to the sublime...mountains, of course...and shafts of rainbow light after a rare rain, the thick perfume of sage baking in the sun, the roar of wind crescendoing through the canyons, other-worldly sunsets that force one to surrender to a moment of unmitigated awe...absolutely MAGICAL...and it would be crushing for me to leave THAT. But the town has lost its soul. The earthy quirk and character have been supplanted by what developers and monied folks always seem to prefer...absurdly overpriced boutique crap, schmancy cycling & climbing gear, crazy-expensive jewelry stores, boring loft residences, etc. I so miss the goosebump-inducing-Sunday-night-Irish-music-jams around a big, stale-beer-smelling table at Conor O'Neils (driven out by escalating rent). It's a long list of losses and I could go on but I won' because, in reality, it's stolen land and we're all occupiers, I could more appropriately whine about that. But, things and people being what they are, I'll just add that housing is impossible; there's still zero diversity; and what you're smelling isn't the neighbor's barbecue, it's a wildland fire licking at your backyard (the reality of inhabiting a Wildland Urban Interface in the epoch of climate catastrophe). It's a different place on many levels and though I lament the unfortunate slide of the town into 'ew,' I will be eternally grateful for the unexpected privilege of having walked part of my path in this extraordinary natural environment on this extraordinary blue planet suspended in an inscrutable universe...while the planet was still blue and this town still had some palpable 'duende.'

I love the nature in Bolder! But I’m moving from Seattle, which is very similar to Boulder. I just vibe better with the Denver vibe! I made a lot of Facebook friends in Denver and it feels great! I’m kinda worn out of Seattle freeze culture so I just want to experience a different culture. I’d even consider Colorado Springs, even though it’s more conservative. I stayed there for a month and I like how friendly people are there.

Glad to know there’s a town out there that needs me! Lol. Maybe from what you say, Boulder needs to subsidize a transfusion of hundreds of grounded, family oriented, rule-following, more traditional people from Ohio. Then Boulder could in turn inspire them to loosen up, be adventurous, and be more complex…? I just met a nice dad that recently moved back here from Boulder, driven out by the cost of living. Said the cost & access to perks like skiing for his family was prohibitive, so why be there?

You make some valid points in your video about change in Boulder but it’s not so simple. After living in Colorado for close to 10 years in which I lived in Parker, Highlands Ranch, Littleton, Denver and Fort Collins. I feel like this Boulder bubble or freeze is all over Colorado. I am originally from the east coast and I found the natives to be really guarded, self absorbed and just not very friendly to outsiders. I am not saying all of them but a bulk of them have this mentality. While my time living in Colorado the friends I made where from other parts of the country and not by Coloradoans. Yes, did I have aquaintances that where Coloradoans, yes but not true friends. By nature I am very friendly, outgoing and have that sense of community I grew up in the northeast. I did not feel a sense of community in Colorado. I felt the vibe was really cold. I am one to assimilate to my surroundings but this mentality in Colorado has been there for years and it’s not easy for the natives to change or welcome change. This is just my opinion. Colorado is a beautiful state and I enjoyed the outdoors, but at the end of the day it just did not feel like home. I give you kiddos for being optimistic but as I stated earlier the mentality in Colorado is just different from other places I lived in and not in a good way. A lot of ppl move to Colorado from other states and have all these expectations but when they get here they have a rude awakening and for many it’s not what they expected. Unfortunately many leave and go back to their home states or other places of the country.

Went to CU Boulder in the early to mid Seventies. It was wonderful. College was cheap in those days as the effects of government "helping" everyone with EZ loans which enabled tuition to explode (well duh)hadn't yet kicked in. When I left Williams Village to get apartment my share of a three br on Portland was something like 55 a month (say 250 today). Crime was nonexistent except for occasional bike theft. There was one aging hippie guy who put up a teepee in a vacant lot on Pearl - that was the homeless population and he was more eccentric than crazy. My friend bought an old house on Pine for 60 grand which seemed expensive then. People were fashionably center left but not whiny and jealous and negative like today's progressive young people.

In 1964 I decided not to buy at home in Boulder because the $10,000 asking price was too high. Coming from New York City I felt like I'd moved to paradise. Being then in my mid twenties and not finding the college crowd interesting I found myself driving to Denver a few times per week for fun and frolic. The mall had not been developed and one could not even find a place for open breakfast on weekends. But you could walk anywhere in old Boulder and parking was never a problem. Only years after moving to Denver did I realize that during my years living in Boulder I'd never seen or worked with a black person although I did not feel that this was by design. Oddly, years later I bought a home in Denver and was the only white person in the neighborhood.

The hate Boulder video was honest, I really dug it and agreed with so much of it, and as a person who finally did leave Boulder I can tell you from the bubble looking back in you need to get out. Places like Boulder (and as "interesting" and "unique" as Boulder may believe itself to be it isn't, also not that smart, there are many communities just like it not in a good way) are self fulfilling prophecies because they are bubbles disconnected from the greater society. Do yourself a favor and let go, and put yourself into a place that has some actual adversity, some actual diversity and real challenges on the everyday level, and when those are starting you in the face everyday you will look back at Boulder and realize how ridiculous Boulder is. Pick a city with a population over 1 million, join the greater society and you will see the only places that talk obsessively about diversity are the places that don't have any. Where the poorest and the richest and everyone in-between all share the same place, in a city. There are some great ones.

@@GenevieveClough We plan to move to Colorado in two years. I know we will at least make $5000 a month (combined salary) and work remotely (so we don't need “job opportunities”). We are your typically millennial married couple and have no kids (and don’t plan to for a while). We don't do the nightlife scene, but we do like to go out to restaurants for date nights. We LIKE the outdoors but we don’t LOVE the outdoors if you get my drift. A two hour day hike on a pretty day is more our speed. It’s not like we are looking to go camping for the whole weekend or something. We had our hearts set on Lakewood in Denver but then I started looking at the prices compared to Springs and I was like: is Denver REALLY worth the price tag? Sure, Denver has more to do: music concerts, theater/plays, and professional sports (Go Broncos lol!). But, Springs is pretty close to Denver so you could just drive to the Red Rocks Amphitheater or Broncos stadium and catch a game or concert. I guess what I am asking is as far as daily life and living… which is better? Denver or Springs? Excluding Denver’s obvious close proximity to “big time” events, can Springs hold its own compared to the “Mile High” city? Are people more friendly in Springs or Denver? @@GenevieveClough I am struggling with a similar mentality. I was abroad for almost 5 years. My problem is that I escaped American culture. I went to different places and experienced new ways of living, I believe in new ideas now. It doesn’t mesh well with people who only have work to talk about and eventually become jealous mostly in the end. Abroad the jealousy is much more easy to overcome because you spend more time trying to understand each other. In America you just get lumped into social groups and it is extremely isolating. I am implying that maybe you have this same experience? My plan I still to leave again. I think I will eventually end Up owning a home in London when I am an old rich guy, But staying around unhappy in America because it would be your “patriotic duty” or any other reason of loyalty to the establishment will make you kill yourself. You need to be around the people who make you truly happy. Maybe it’s your family maybe it’s people you met in magic situations. What is happy is different for each person. If you ever want to talk more I am open to that, But I also understand if you just think I am a confused weirdo.

The thing is that people in Boulder aren't in an ivory castle. Boulder isn't really even that sophisticated. South Florida or New York is far more advanced than Boulder. The idea that they are somehow more intellectual there is kind of deluded. When Im in Boulder Im not really that impressed. The mountains are nice but that's about all its got going for it.

The “ivory tower” analogy is referring to how people in Boulder often think they’re very well informed and know what’s best. That, and we’re a very wealthy and generally educated community. Boulder is certainly not “sophisticated” in ways you might think of east coasters. In fact, we’re pridefully casual and we think that makes us superior as well. 🙃

I left because Colorado is now flooded with California expats-the freaks I'm trying to get away from. The drugs and street people suck. Local and state governments are at war with traditional Colorado citizens: ranchers, energy producers, hunters, trappers, old school outdoors folks. . .it was really sad to see what has happened to your great state.
