That is just exactly what is the issue with all this. For his standards, he is playing subpar. He is less efficient, missing quite a few shots he'd normally make, he has had some defensive lapses in games and isn't moving or even passing as well as we are used to see him doing. That said, he still effectively is the most prolific scorer on the court. A 35, 7 and 10 game is nothing special for Luka, he has been doing that all season. However, compared to normal NBA players, this is still insane, especially when he's shooting relatively efficiently. (below rate for his threepointers mainly) Bad games from Luka are still great performances. If you keep in mind that the Clippers are defending him as good as they can, he is playing hurt and the pressure of the playoffs are much higher, this even more amazing.

@@pinobluevogel6458 - I think the issue is that Luka is still putting up outstanding numbers in key games while playing sick, injured and in foul trouble. Meanwhile he gets criticized for bad defense despite the fact that his team won by 30 and held 3 All Stars including 2 League MVPs to 28 total points. Mix in another 2 time Finals MVP that could have played and decided not to (zero points for Kawhi) The Mav’s held LA to 93 points, they didn’t do that playing 5 on 4 on the defensive end. He also led his team in rebounding which is really a defensive stat. If there’s a list of players to criticize this series, Luka is at the bottom. He’s too valuable to be taking chances on defense, Luka’s main job on defense is to stay out of foul trouble and prevent second chance points by grabbing rebounds. If he gets a block or a couple of steals, all the better.

And he manages 35/10/7 blowout game against clippers with a considerably injured knee. Only thing he lacks is good defense, but it also depends on his role he plays as a Maverick. He isnt a Center like Jokic, thats why Jokic is a Great defender, and Luka as a PG is averaging more than Prime Kobe, but theres many other reasons. Not to knock anything that Jokic is doing, but most of the rebounds and assists has a lot to do with his height arvantage and the fact that he plays as a Center.

I think the comments about Ky only getting 14 points is ridiculous. Ky has averaged 11.6 points in the first half and 25.5 points per game this entire year. Ky shows up in the fourth quarter. Dallas never trailed after the first quarter (there was 11 lead changes in the first quarter). Ky didn't NEED to show up so why should he? Let him be productive and efficient defensively and not wear himself out so he is rested for game 6. Luka is hobbled and sick and was still cooking so now in game 6 if Luka isn't at his peak, Ky can be the guy to lead this team. This is why Dallas made the trade and resigned Ky, so Luka doesn't have to be the guy every night. Game 1: 31 points - 4 points Q1, 2 points Q2, 20 points Q3, 5 points Q4 Game 2: 23 points - 0 points Q1, 7 points Q2, 8 points Q3, 8 points Q4 Game 3: 21 points - 2 points Q1, 0 points Q2, 8 points Q3, 11 points Q4 (He was in foul trouble with 4 fouls 2:30 minutes inside the 3rd quarter.) Game 4: 40 points - 0 points Q1, 16 points Q2, 10 points Q3, 14 points Q4 (He needed to be the guy being down 31 points and give the Mavericks a chance to win.) Game 5: 14 points - 4 points Q1, 2 points Q2, 3 points Q3, 5 points Q4 (By the 4th quarter, Mavericks were already up by 20.)

I don't understand why people say Luka is still getting 29 ppg he is not playing bad. Ask Luka, he is great defensively but his efficiency, especially his 3 ball is lacking. Scoring below his season average (and even below what he used to against the clips) while expected (since the mavs are now not as Luka centric and he doesn't need to do as much) its not what he expects of himself, Luka is a playoff riser, if his team needs him, he is there, that hasn't been the case in this series. Luka Doncic is definitely struggling offensively this series, he will be the first one to tell you, a 29 point triple double for even a single playoff game is something most players will never even come close to touching. But Luka is at least the second best basketball player in the world, after his career he will be in very very elite conversations, especially about scoring the basket, and dropping this much in both ppg and efficiency is not the standard he has set for himself because he has been that great and because he has been that much of a riser when his team needs him.

You are who you are CONSISTENTLY (not on your best or worst days) and Luka has consistently been an inefficient offensive player that is trash on defense, just like James Harden! Luka's career stats are: FG% = 47% (this is trash for a 6'8 player shooting close to the rim); 3P% = 34.7% (this is trash for point guard) and FT% = 74% (this is trash for a point guard). By any reasonable assessment, Luka is highly inefficient for a 6.8 point guard, just like James Harden in his prime (but at least Harden can shoot free throws). The part where Trae Young explains what makes Kyrie Irving work next to Luka is great. He has been so unselfish all the way during his Mavs time, focusing on winning and getting guys going more than his own shot diet. Believe me, he is always stepping up when needed, mostly during later parts of the game. But his incredible professionalism, his poise, his leadership and his kind heart has kept this team performing at great levels. Kyrie is also a really fun to watch player, that has a couple of truly spectacular or creative moments during every game. I think this series is decided now, the Mavs aren't going to let up, especially on their home court.

  • @DanteKobayashi_

I think two things can be true in this case. I watched that Game 4 and Luka looked off for sure. He was doing everything he usually does but, it felt like he was off on all of it by like inches. Shots that were guaranteed weren’t always falling, his easy and-ones weren’t dropping, and his overall body language and emotions felt lethargic. You could tell he was in a funk both physically and mentally. Now, I don’t necessarily agree with his post game comment saying he needs to do more because I felt as if that Game 4 was on JKidd, not Luka. You can’t have Harden drive 6 times with an uncontested floater cause your best player in foul trouble and couldn’t guard him the way he wanted. You have TWO 7fters that you drafted and traded for; there was no excuse to not put back in Lively or Gafford to get some rim protection yet, he left Kleber out there at the five. But I think the media took Lukas comments and ran with it out of proportion like the media LOVES to do. They turned his accountability into a narrative about him playing “horrible” all series with some talking points being about, “Can Kyrie carry the Mavs?” like bro, what? Every non-casual knows that this team is absolutely nothing without Luka and his “bad” games are better than 98% of the other players “bad” games. So, I think Luka has been “struggling” but, not to the degree the media is trying to display. I think he’s just fighting through injury and he knows how big this series is for him not only to move to the next round, but to lift that Clips curse off his back! He recognizes this team’s potential and wants to capitalize.

As a longtime Mavs fan, here's what happens big picture now: If Luka has a "bad game" like only getting 25+ pts and not quite getting a triple-double or some shit, he and/or the Mavs gets criticized. If Luka goes off for like 45-15-12...he and/or the Mavs gets criticized, except then it's because Luka is a ballhog and too heliocentric to ever be taken seriously and the rest of the team sucks because Luka has to do everything. I hate when people whine about how there's some kind of conspiracy against their favorite team, but man sometimes it is head-scratching when it comes to us lol.

The game 4 comeback kind of proved that the mavs will definitely not lose this series. It took PG and harden BOTH getting extremely hot to end up barely edging out a win while mavs had an oddly high amount of turnovers, missed shots and a sick/injured luka. Mavs kept it rolling game 5, theres no reason they should lose tonight. I'm sure luka would love to close out at home and get some rest before the thunder. I'll be there, let's go mavs!

But i agree, and Luka said so himself... he did struggle, but that is why he than involved others more. What is imoportant in the end, even when Luka struggels the mavs still win, and in the playoffs. Wich means, this team is real, the dream of the ring is real. And they can all feel it. And that is the real Luka effect. His belief is infectious and his words: If you dont believe you shouldnt be here became the unwritten moto of entire Dallas.

Coming from a mavs fan: I don’t think what those guys were saying was too crazy (minus dismissing the injury bc that does affect a player’s game). I also don’t agree w the fact that they’re saying he isn’t getting a lot of chances at the foul line considering he took over 5 every game except the last one. Still, the guy’s point on the tough defense is fair. Luka has been slowed down a bit (albeit relative to his typical game). He’ll tend to end the first half on like 20-25% efficiency and come back to end the game on like 40-50%. Think that is the definition of being slowed down. He also does have tendencies. Other than his step back, one of them is looking for people to pass as he is shooting in the paint. These guys know these things and are going to exploit it. Think that is what the podcast’s point was on the defense part at least which isn’t really unfair. Having said that, Luka is also just Luka so people should have seen a heater coming from a mile away.

See when Luka passed the ball to his team mate thru Lebrons legs it was a shame. See how Luka assist his team mate from one end of the court See when Luka faked his pass and shoot the ball when his opponent is looking the other way so many moves not commonly used by todays NBA players

They were correct because before game 5 Luka was shooting 38.8 FG% and 25.6 3P%. Those stats are complete trash and the only reason he was averaging 29 points is because he was chucking up a million shots which is the only reason the series was 2-2. Don't talk BS about Kyrie because his entire career is that as an efficient player. In game 5, Kyrie only had 14 points because he's not a selfish chucker like Luka because he let Luka jack up a million shots as usual to get his confidence back...and put his ego to the side. Kyrie was by far the most influential player in game 5 (and the whole series) even after scoring 14 points because of his overall play on offense and defense (locking up James Harden).

Until then, never compare an inefficient chucker like Luka that can't guard his own shadow and never won even 1 championship to MJ and Kobe!! You're the one that clearly knows nothing about real championship level basketball!! You can compare Luka to James Harden, both inefficient chuckers that can't play a lick of defense and has never won anything!! Lmao 🤣 🤣🤣
