Energy is a key organising principle in modern science, the conversation of energy being a grounding and universal law. But what is energy?
In this episode of the Sheldrake-Vernon Dialogues, Rupert Sheldrake and Mark Vernon examine the history of the idea and the word. In science, energy is a relatively recently notion, emerging in its current form in the 19th century, drawing much on mechanics.
The word itself was coined by Aristotle, in the 4th century BCE, carrying a sense of vital actuality and living presence. That meaning is still remembered in Orthodox theology, which describes the energeia of God.
The conversation ranges over the promiscuity of energy in the natural world to the spiritual notion of energy, including the subtle energies of the body. The implications of shaping the idea of energy through mechanical metaphors also has important ramifications, from the descriptions of economics and the efficacy of psychology to the experience of God.
Further, the most recent physics argues that energy is not conserved after all as the universe expands.

A very intelligent conversation. It's actually inspiring in its exploratory nature. It seems clear to me that if we are ever to comprehend "life, the universe and everything" we're going to have to transcend boundaries, break free of the pigeonholes imposed on us by history such as 'science' and 'theology'.

I asked my physics prof for an exact definition of energy. He put his head in his hands and told me to go away. My best definition would be 'that which results in an increase in entropy'.

Gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy are linked AND BALANCED opposites, as the stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. The fourth dimension AND conservation of energy are consistent with what is E=MC2. Consider TIME AND time dilation ON BALANCE. Frank Martin DiMeglio is correct that THE FOURTH dimension, that stars and planets are points in the night sky, is consistent with the coronal heating “problem”. Great. TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual ON/IN BALANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE). Consider what is THE EYE ON BALANCE. The red shift expansion of the universe, dark energy and dark matter are all fictions that we need to discard and move beyond.
The Life-Desire is the Motor or Force, of the Eternal Life, in direct extension, We have Will, (Life-side) and Gravity, (Stuff-side) By our Will, We do balance Gravity of Earth, with our own, when We lift the cup. Heat* and Freeze*, is the two Legs as the Stuff-side 'walks on'. Rainbow picture the Mother-Energy, colors, the Basic-Energies. Instinct, Gravity*, Feeling*, Intelligence, Intuition, Memory, can also be recognized in This Device, Automatic, Power, Sensors, Logic/Order, (*), Harddisc. 1, 2, 3, is the Stuff-bearing Basic-Energies, but all Stuff and Mind, is a composition of all.
"energy is the capacity to do work". So if a photon is a package of energy, it is a package of "the capacity to do work" so a space rock moving through space at some speed, has kinetic energy "the capacity to do work" which implies there are photons associated with the space rock's kinetic energy in an absolute sense, stored in the space permeating the matter of the rock. Since "the capacity to do work" is CAPACITY, space itself has capacity since it stores and propogates photons. This implies a limit (Lorentz transform?) , and also means that electromagnetic vibration should cause different movements of the rock dependant on frequency (photon energies). Basic reasonings here, leading to the forbidden physics we are not supposed to know?
Then again many of the advancements in rigorous modelling of markets have come from physics and math. Brownian motion for how stocks move, the Black-Scholes equation for options trading (which is related to the equations for heat diffusion). Not only is energy 'promisicuous', one power to rule them all as it were. But statistics as it is realized through a variety of Matter, stochastically, shares common intelligible forms. The 'promiscuity' of math as a language to describe phenomenon which grounds a level of rigorized metaphor
