Please be careful about determining the meanings of the Japanese names by the individual Kanji. People often pick any Kanji for names by the Kanji's sounds besides their meanings, so the final names can be just two-favorite-kanji-put-together names without meanings as Japanese words. (And Mayu/まゆ is not related to Maya/まや at all. They are two completely different names.)

My favourite meanings of this name are Maya Hee, Maya Hoo, Maya Ha, Maya Haha

Maya it's a super "handy" name!! People from everywhere in the world can pronounce it right since it's super easy and existing in so many languages. I was always confused about the meaning of my name, since you can't find a single one. I used to have japanese people telling me it's a japanese name, Indian people telling me it's hindi, egyptian people telling me it's arabic...

4:17 I thought to myself, that's an awful lot close to the meaning of Maya in Malay and then I remembered that most Malay words, excluding Arabic, English derivatives, mostly came from Sanskrit

Maia (spelled with "i") is also very common Portuguese surname, which is a toponym from a region of northern Portugal, called "Terra da Maia"

A famous (fictional) Maya is Maya the Bee. There was a children's animation show about her (I believe it's originally from Germany, but not sure), and I used to watch that a lot as a kid.

The animation "みつばちマーヤ/Mitsubachi Maya" is made in Japan.

A maia is also a lesser deity in Tolkien mythology. Some well known maiar would be Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron, and the balrog. So, if you are nerdy enough, you could name your kid Maia same as, say, a christian could name theirs Angel.

Maya is also a name of a dinosaur, the Maiasaura. The name means 'good mother lizard'. I think because at the time we thought that it was the only dinosaur taking care of their young. We didn't know all dinosaurs were basically good mothers, as the are the ancestors of birds.

This also appears to be the case with the name Kai. Tons of different meanings originating in tons of different languages.

In Hebrew, Maya can mean "from god" (m-ya) but it can also mean water as a variation of the normal Hebrew word for water - mayim. Other similar Hebrew names also relate to water, like Maayan and Meital/Maytal.

It’s similar to the word for water in Iraqi Arabic dialects with words similar to Mai and Mya, I think it’s similar to the Aramaic word too.

I like the name Maya because it reminds me of the Mayans. I love learning about the Mayans and Aztecs.

Maya is not a spelling variation of Mayu 真由 in Japanese. In Japanese, every syllable can have a different meaning. The “ma” portion can mean “truth” using the kanji 真, but the second syllable (yu vs. ya) will have a completely different meaning depending on the kanji the parent chooses. For example, I could decide I want the “ya” portion to mean “arrow” so 真矢 would mean something like “straight (truthful) arrow.” Other possibilities of Maya can be 真弥 (meaning something like “honest and gentle), or 摩耶 (mother of the Buddha Sidhartha Gautama), and others. Names are often chosen so that the stroke count of the characters are lucky along with other factors such as including a portion of the parents names or just whatever name is trending, or naming after celebrities, etc.

For Video game Mayas, we have Maya Fey. The assistant of Pheonix Wright.

It's not my real name but I'm trans and it was a name I considered taking on, but I chose to just keep it as an online name only. It's a beautiful name!

Funfact: in German we have to destinct words for "the same". So the "a" in Maya are not "das selbe" (because there are two of them), but they are "das gleiche", because they sound and look alike So we are always aware that you can count them two ways.

Maia in Greek, with the spelling 'Μαία', in modern usage has a meaning of birthwife, or birthing nurse.

This is the most on-time I’ve been to a Name Explained video. Surprising since I’ve never turned on notifications for any channel.

Yes! Finally, my name! I'm Fennoswedish, so I technically should used the spelling Maja or even Maija, but I just think the M and Y combo is really pretty. Also pretty exotic from my point of view. There is Maia Shibutani (Figure Skater), Maia who is a character from the Circle movie and Maya who is a character in the 2md season of the 100 TV show.

My little sister was born in May, and my parents couldn't agree on what to name her for a long time. Finally, I (4.5 years old at the time) just interjected with "She was born in May, so why not Maya", and that ended up being her name.

I am glad to hear its popularity around the world, for it was a part of my childhood. Though the animation series is a Japanese, it is based on a story by a German author. The bee's name is Maja in German, and it is pronounced as Mah-ya (マーヤ) with a long vowel A in Japanese.

As for water, maim (mah-yeem) in Hebrew means water, and it's plural only... I only know modern spoken Hebrew, and it has no singular form, but maybe someone who knows some history of the language could tell us the singular form that the word originally came from. I could only assume that "maia" indeed used to mean water in Hebrew...
