Came down here to say that. Her function in the poem is to bring the pilgrim on a journey where he receives blessings. (She already has blessings)
Beatrix Potter was also a mycologist (person who studies fungus) and some of the illustrations she made of mushrooms are still used to this day.
I don't think you need "viatrix" to explain Beatrix. Beatrix means just she who gives happiness. That desinence describes an active action. Beata is one (female) who got, or was made, happy (feminine passive past participle of the verb "beare"), while for the active role you have the desinence -tor (victor, amator, beator) if it's a male, and -trix (victrix, amatrix, beatrix) if it's a female.

Don't forget dominatrix ;) And Beata is a very common name in Poland. There is also name Beatrycze (Polish way of writing Italian name Beatrice preserving it's original Italian pronunciation), but it's barely even used anymore as it sounds very old and weird in Polish (where every female name has to end with an A to sound correct for our sense of grammar).
My cousin Beatrice in Italy pronounces her name “bee-ah-tree-chay” tho - as does all of us who use her name lol
Queen, now Princess Beatrix, of the Netherlands!
My great-grandmother was called Beatrice. This video is timely as she'd have turned 120 next week. I didn't know it was an Italian name. The pronounciation of its original form must definitely be different from the English one though!
Also Beatrice Arthur who starred as Maude Findlay on the sitcoms All in the Family (appearing 1971-72) and Maude (1972-78), as well as Dorothy Zbornak on the sitcom The Golden Girls (1985-92).

There is a town a few miles from where I live called Beatrice. However, it is pronounced as Bee-AT-riss. And Patrick, it's been 60 years since I studied Latin, but Beatus would be pronounced bay-aht-us, unless I've forgotten all I learned back then.

Simmilar to Trixie, in Spanish you may find Titi as a nickname of Beatriz. But this name is kinda uncommon and seems a bit old fashioned. I knew a woman who liked to be called Titi just because she hated her name

In Germany this name is very rare. I only came along one woman and its a fictional character. Her name was Beatrix. I think, in the pronounciation of Bea, Beatrice and Beatrix, the should be a clearer seperation of E and A, because its no beat.

I've had two different relatives (married into the family) named Aunt Bea. One is deceased, so she's traveling the next world and living up to her name.
I remember reading selections from Dante's 'Divine Comedy' in university Comp Lit, and everyone had to pronounce Beatrice as the professor did, an enthusiastic "bee-uh-TREE-chay".
My name is Beatrice. Thank you for making this video. Brings more explanation, meaning and clarification.
wait so ... it is "believed [by whom?] to" derive from "viatrix" ... but "no sources are pointing to 'Beatrice' meaning 'traveler.'" which makes the "viatrix" connection a folk etymology. i can see "beatrix" (Italian "beatrice") supplying the f. of Latin m. "beator" ("one who confers blessing") just as the feminine of "executor" = "executrix," "dominator">"dominatrix," et al. It sounds exactly parallel to the way some might now say "we've been blessed with a son/daughter" - it's only the fact that we don't now use the form "blesser" that makes people want to connect it to something else like "viatrix," which in Latin would not even rhyme. my money's on "she who confers blessings." it was my grandmother's name. not that i believe there was any particular blessing going on.
Pronunciation note: Beatus, unlike many words, is pronounced the same in Classical Latin, Church Latin, and Italian: Bay - ah - toos (No long A, please)
I'd say it's pluralized in the same way these words are. appendix: appendixes or appendices matrix: matrices or matrixes
"Beatrix" is also the name of the previous Dutch queen. She's still alive, albeit as a princess now.
I have encountered a number of women named Beatrice in the U.S., however they pronounced it in a number of alternate ways. One pronounces it as BEE-ah-tris, another pronounces it as bee-AT-tris, and yet another pronounces it as BEE-ah-treez. Only one pronounces it as BEE-tris.
Plural of Beatrice is Beatrices (like most words ending in -ce) Plural of Beatrix is Beatrixes (like most words ending in X)

There's a city in Nebraska called Beatrice, but they pronounce it with strong stress on the second syllable: be AT riss
You keep saying the name is unchanged from the italian, but it is. I would say Be-er-tris in english but Be-a-tri-che in italian. Very different, for one 4 syllables instead of 3. It is just english kept the italian spelling but closer to french in pronunciation. The -trice ending (2 syllables & c pronounced ch) is a way showing gendered occupations in italian like attore and attrice, actor and actress respectively.

Correction: The Italian version is Beatrice pronounced "Beyah-TREEchey" and when brought to English the pronunciation DID change a lot!! In English the name is pronounced "BEE-uh-tress". Italian is super easy to pronounce because each of the 5 vowels have only one way they are pronounced. If you learn the one sound for each vowel then you can pronounce any Italian word because it's completely phonetic. A = ah E = ey I = ee O = o U = ü / oo

"Beatrice" would be the normal form of the name in Swedish as well, so I don't know it Shakespeare had anything to do with what it looks like in English. I would rather guess that the Italian spelling became used in French and then became popular all over Europe.

You didn't manage to escape your Brit-centric world view in this video. But your audience is international. So this clashes a bit. Though the name of "Beatrice" exists in English speaking countries, it is not nearly as popular as variations of "Beatrix" and "Beatus" are in other countries. It's a normal thing. English speakers just don't want to give their baby a name so similar to the word "beat". It's like Germans kind of avoid the name "Rachel" due to it's similarity to the German word "Rache" (revenge), which is a fact made famous in the Sherlock Holmes stories. But it's actually a pretty poor choice to stop there and not research enough outside of the English speaking world. As one viewer already pointed out, it's shocking you completely forgot to mention Beatrix of the Netherlands. It's also odd that you never managed to pronounce any version of "Beatus", "Beate" and "Bea" right, even though English speaking celebrities exist and you could get the pronunciation from them. For example there's Bea Arthur and you could have figured out, "Bea" has two syllables.
