A kids show when I was a kid had a modern character named Callie, and her ancestor was named Callista, and I also had heard the name Callisto thanks to the TV show Xena, so as a kid I just thought it was probably short for Callisto/Callista, same way Will is both it's own name and short for William.
The few times I've heard Calliope spoken aloud by people who seem confident in their pronunciation have all pronounced it as something like "cal-eye-oh-pee" although that was in reference to the identically spelled musical instrument (a sort of old-timey steam powered pipe organ)

Calliope is also a greek name or greek inspired I vaguely remember a greek myth that had a character with that name.

There’s one of them in bioshock infinite. I believe it’s playing “girls just wanna have fun.” But if that doesn’t help, these are those I have a hand crank music box and monkey instruments. Although some actually had full keyboards.

That's always how I pronounced it.
i literally just went from a Mori Calliope stream to seeing this on the front page, uploaded 5 mins ago wtf
Behindthename is probably my favorite name etymology website so far
I once came across the name Calliadne (basically add "add knee" onto the end of Callie, for pronunciation), and thought it was adorable. It's also from Greek origin, and apparently means "beautiful and holy". Callie could also, perhaps, be a diminutive of Calliadne. I feel like Callie is one of those names that started off as a nickname for a specific name, then became a name of it's own right, and then began being applied as a nickname to other names that were just similar enough to work.
I'm a Katharine (named for the Hepburn variety) and I think this name has SO MANY variations. It has so many different spellings and nicknames! Katherine, Catherine, Kathryn, Cathryn, Kathy, Cathy, Katie, Katy, Kate, Kitty, Kat, Kay, Cath, Kathleen, the list goes on! Have you got any videos on Katies and the 80s-90s Katie boom? I was one of many in my classes at school.
I knew about this ethymology because of Grey's Anatomy. There was a character on the show, that appeared from seasons 2 to 12, called Callie Torres (played by Sara Ramirez, a brilliant actor), and one day their character full name was revealed to be Calliope Iphegenia Torres.
Callie could really be short for a lot of different things at once. I once named a D&D character Callistepha (from Greek kallistephanos, fair-crowned), and the rest of the group shortened that to Calli(e) very quick
just so you know, Callie Brownson (the american football player/coach you mentioned) isn't a man, she's a woman. She isn't trans or anything, just a masculine woman.

It's short for "bébé". No, wait. That's the answer to some other question.
The word calliope (although in the instrument sense rather than the name sense) is mentioned in a fiction podcast, in which the unclear pronunciation is joked about by one of the characters
ka-LAI-oh-pee? Does the UK not have calliopes?

yessssss thanks man! this is my favorite video of yours now
I found this video much more interesting than your usual name videos (which, I should add, are already interesting on their own). There was a ton of information that was totally new to me and that I couldn’t even have taken a guess at. Fantastic!
I have a character in a novel I'm writing whose name is Caleb, "Callie" to his friends.
Pretty sure the English pronunciation of Calliope is Cal-Lie-Oh-Pee

Kuh LIE oh pee. Same 3rd from the end ancient Greek pronunciation rule as in Hermione. Also, calliope is the name for the mechanical organ that plays in a carousel or merry-go-round.
My last cat was called Callie! Great name ❤️

My cat is also Callie.. was she a calico cat by any chance??
Given that Calliope is one of the Greek muses, I'd have said the ending is likely to be pronounced '-pay' in English. Would be interesting to know if other Greek muses have names or derivatives in current use. Calliope, Clio Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, Urania.
One of my best friends name is Callista and we call her Callie! Honestly I'm surprised you didn't see it when researching because it definitely comes up within a few results on google 😅😂

I was thinking it might be Callista, too!
I honestly thought it was just a different spelling to the name Kelly, but as it turns out, they are homophones with vastly different origins. It's also not a short version of Michaela, though some versions go in a similar direction.
The only "Calliope" I knew of was a military equipment from WW2, T34 Calliope(not to be confused with Soviet T-34 or American T34 Heavy Tank). It was a multiple rocket launcher, mounted atop an M4 Sherman tank. It was probably a song to some ears and probably the last song they've ever listened to. Also, I've always thought that "Calliope" was pronounced like "Cal-ee-op". This episode, like many others surprised me a lot in that regard.
Sometimes it’s not short for anything. Sometimes that’s the whole name. LIKE IN MY CASE-
this was a good day for a close up mic
When I was younger I said if I had a daughter I'd name her Callie. While I still like the name idk if I'd use it any time soon.
I have a friend who goes by Cali, but her full name is Calisha
You actually pronoubced my name surprisingly well. Kudos.
My friend was named Calgary and we called her Callie!
Actually Calliope (Ca-lee-O-pee) means beautiful eyes in Greek. The "op" part comes from the word opee that means eye. It's seen in words such as optics, optometry and even option etc.
Calliopes play the music on merry-go-rounds
I have a friend who goes by Caly (same pronunciation, different spelling), as a shortening of Caitlyn
This is the name of one of my object characters. She exists in the form of a gray hexagonal tile.
I assumed it was short for Callista.
I had a friend Cally growing up and she said she was named after a Callandra. Makes sense to me.
I love names so I used to spend quite a lot of time on baby name websites. I can’t have kids though, so having the algorithm constantly recommending baby stuff was depressing. I still like looking up names every so often.
I don't have a baby name book, but I am a fan of baby name websites despite not having a child or expecting one anytime soon. I'll definitely use that website in future - cheers! I just find it interesting as to what people's names mean. Often the parents had no idea and simply chose something that sounds good and get so surprised when they find out what the name actually means. Some people even get offended!
I always assumed it was derived from the Greek Calliope, but it is popular in Scotland and areas with Scottish settlers, suggested to be a short form of Caledonia, the Latin name for the region north of the Forth.
And once again Patrick, you absolutely nailed the Greek pronunciation! The stress is in the '-lo' syllable. And yes, it does mean 'beautiful face'
Our family dog was named Callie and it wasn't short of anything as far as we were aware. So maybe you could get some sort of puppy names book instead?
One of my classmates in elementary school was named Callie. I've even met a Calandra
I have the baby name book my parents used for me and my siblings. I used to look through it all the time growing up, and now it's so cool to have it for whenever I want.... Definitely not having kids anytime soon if I can help it
My brother's dog was named Callie, and it was derived from the world caliper. He's a mechanic, and names all of his dogs after car parts (Axle, and Chassie).
Calliope from the 100 TV Show goes by Callie for short and her father calls her Calliope. I thought Callie or Cali was short from Califorina.
Callisto is also a name it could be short for. She was a character that I think rejected Apollo? She was cursed to be able to predict the future but no one ever believed her.
I have several baby name books. I got some weird looks when my best friend gave me one as a gift at her rehearsal dinner. I have no children and no prospects for any in the future, but I own physical and digital copies of five + books and have a whole list of names sites saved in Chrome.
So disappointed to see absolutely no mention of the Shinigami Rap Queen of Hololive EN Calliope Mori in both this video and the comments
Cauliflower obviously.
Isn’t it short for callista
The only time I’ve heard the name Callie (before this video) was on the show Peep Show. Every time I saw that episode I would find myself wondering what name that could probably be sort for. You’ve satisfied my curiosity.
Neil Diamond will have to rewrite "Sweet Caroline" to "Sweet Callie."
Anyone else think of Mori Calliope as soon as they saw this video? No? Just me? ok.
It's short for Callestie. That's my cousin's name
I have a copy of "Hello, My Name Is..." By Jeff, Truman and Walker Bradley.
More writers probably use baby naming books and sites than expectant parents at this point lol
Cal (as in California) - eye - oh-pee = Calliope, Or at least the way I've heard it pronounced here in America.
Callie… …fornia Gurls we’re unforgetable
Callie could be short for all of these mentioned. Just as "AL" can be short for Allan, Alana, Alfred, Alicia, Albert, Alison, Alvin, Alice, Alex (which can also be short for Alexander, Alexandra, Alexis) etc.
Not that many people have the name Callie it’s very unique

I'm sure that a lot of people who use the name use it as a short form of a longer name thus not showing up in official stats.
is that the same for males....such as cal ripken jr?
My friend Kylie started calling herself Kally - with that spelling - based on the way a Welsh French teacher (as in a teacher of French who was Welsh, not the other way round) pronounced her original name.
It's short for Calliefornia, of course! 😄
The only time I hear people using Callie (spelled cali) is when they talk about California
I know someone named Calissa that goes by callie
Lol my name!
Deadbeats, report yourselves!
My dog is named Callie (It isn't short for anything she is however named after a place, no not -fornia)

When did you get your hair cut?
My sister-in-law is a Callie. It isn’t short for anything. But my brother has decided it is a nick name for Calliope. Which is pronounced kuh-LIE-oh-pee. Similar to epitome or hyperbole or Eurydice.
Oi I'm not one of your name nerds! I'm one of your exciting Keiths.
Baby in French is bébé
I think a lot of writer feel you on the baby names but no baby.
California tbh, only thing I heard is that it means Callie
I'm a writer with a baby name book.
I do not understand the concept of baby name books. They aren’t baby names, they are people names. Babies grow up. People should always run their potential names for their child through a test for respectfulness; e.g. The Reverend Bambi Jones, Ambassador Bambi Jones, and Sheriff Bambi Jones all sound a bit silly which tells us that this is not a respectful name to inflict on your child. Apologies to any readers who are named Bambi, but your parents did a poor job of name selection.
No deadbeats on the comments so far 😔 Sad
Do Ratleen!
Weird, I don't think I had ever heard this name before.
Your voice sounds fine, but the sound quality is frustratingly bad as someone with crummy hearing. Is your usual mic unavailable when you're recording video?
California
kal-ay-oh-pee.
Obligatory "you've lost weight" comment
Could be short for Calista.
I'm obliged to comment here just to get my fellow 'dad' fans dragged by the algorithm and gets you a few new subs.
Callandra is pronounced kuh-LAWN-druh.
PLEASE VOTE ON "NORA"
I think it's California.
Do the name Jacob!!!!!
I think it's pronounced Ka-Lye-O-Pee
You did not pay your respects to the rap mistress of death v-tuber Calliope.
i would think carrie was a nickname based on your description of callie so why would you have a nickname of a nickname ? 🙂
Isn't calligraphy from the same Greek word Callie = Beautiful? Maybe you can find the root word from there.
Calvin to Cal to Callie. Also Kah Lie oh pee

The content is good, but the sound is so bad. It's like listening to this through a tin can. I'm sorry, but I am hoping this will improve the audio. This is constructive criticism.
Calliope is pronounced kuh-LIE-uh-pee.
