This is a good explanation. It makes sense that being teased for such a prominent name. It's still far better than say, Adolf. But what's really intriguing to me is Elvis is a name of European origin (whether Norwegian, Irsh, Welsh or English), and clearly Elvis was an American singer/entertainer. Would love to know about documented Elvis(es) who preceded Mr. Presley (Fun fact: in the 19th Century, Elvis had an ancestor who immigrated to the U. S. from what is today Germany. His surmane was Pressler, which quickly Anglicized to Presley.

The "Elvis" in Miami Vice was (obviously) named after Presley. The story is that Sonny "rescued" him as a former mascot of the Florida Gators football team. Sonny himself was a college football star until he suffered a career ending injury. Somehow he managed to serve a couple tours in Vietnam as well before finally going into lay enforcement. It all seems rather unlikely when you write it all out like this, but with Miami Vice you're not supposed to think about it that hard; the Phil Collins music in the background makes up for any questionable backstory. Ironically, I don't recall any of Elvis' music (Presley's or Costello's) being used in the show, though Switek was fond of intimating Elvis and once shot a television in his honor.

I don't have an Elvis, by my great-grandmother had a brother called Elvia (born 1903 and lived in Missouri). By the time I came around (in the same year Elvis Presley died!), other than his sisters, all his living relatives were nieces and nephews of one generation or another, so everyone called him Uncle. I guess his sisters did too, because I never heard them call him "Elvia," though I guess in earlier years people called him "Elvie." I was several years old before I found out what his actual name was. By the way, of his two sisters who were still living at the time, one was my great-grandma Hazel, and the other was named Flora Bell but was only ever called Bibby.
