The thing is when safe sex is taught the value of waiting until you're ready and not rushing into having sex is something they teach. Meaning they teach abstinence too just not as the end to the discussion. Honestly the problem is the abstinence ONLY bit.

Even in the Chicago suburbs, I was taught abstinence only, complete with false information and made up horror stories, until the age of fifteen. I understand that people should wait until they're older than that, but at least let us know our options! Talk about a happy ending! At the end of Dobson's presentation, when he asks if they're ready to take a stand against safe sex practices, the unimpressed sarcastic "m'yuh" from the kids was the most perfect answer they could give. Just listen to that response. Like hell anything he said actually stuck. That "m'yuh" is the apathetic groan of kids willing to say anything just to get the old angry man to shut up and let them go.

What safe sex education doesn’t tell you that not having sex is also an option to avoid these problems? Then again I got the “we encourage abstinence but we’re realists so we’re gonna teach you all about condoms and stuff” education. They preached abstinence to hell and back but also taught me about all the birth control.

Yay I'm the #1000th view, probably. There's this hypothesis around the skeptic community about why the Christian fundamentalists do this: lt's not really about kids keeping 'pure' before marriage - It's about them making all sex after marriage is fundamentally safe, therefore making them eschew contraception, have lots of kids and increasing exponentially the numbers of future parishioners.

Since I find the seven deadly sins an interesting motif, I read up a bit about it as a non-Catholic and of course stumbled across what the church fathers of yore thought about "lust" and their spiritual reasons for "no sex before marriage". Essentially, the idea was that if you're focused only on pleasures of the body, you're not connecting lovingly with that person. Since marriage is supposed to be like God's relationship with the church, a holy and unconditionally loving union, just focusing on sex will make that connection hollow because someone's attractiveness is temporary but the emotional bond you have with someone is forever. Sex is good and fine, it's a gift from God, but earthly pleasures shouldn't be the only thing you focus on, you should still be building spiritual and emotional connections with people (whatever you define as "spiritual"). There's also the problem of thinking purely with your hormones and urges and nothing else... To be honest, that's kind of wise when you think about it, and it's something that non-religious people have realized for themselves. When someone argues for no sex before marriage on *those* grounds, I at least understand where they're coming from even if I don't agree with it. But shit like this is just predicated on "Because STDs. Because pregnancy. Because hysterectomies, mmmkay." This could just be because there's a cultural difference between Protestant and Catholic, but oh well.
