The Mysterious Lost Buddhas Of Afghanistan - What Is Left Behind In Bamyan? 🇦🇫

Inside Taliban-Controlled Afghanistan 🇦🇫 Since I started to travel and explore Asia, Afghanistan has always been my dream country. The movies I have watched and the books I have read about Afghanistan have built dreamy expectations in my head of the country that I would not be able to experience anywhere else.
My visit did not disappoint - Afghanistan was time travel from bustling & unorganized bazaars, street shaves, same clothing in different colors, no brands, magnificent landscapes, and the bravest people with the biggest hearts of hospitality.
In my trip, we covered Mazar-i-Sharif, Kabul & Bamyan.
Visiting Afghanistan is a sensitive topic for many people. As in any country I go to, the main objective is to share the day-to-day life and spotlight the ordinary people that the mass media fail to capture. No matter how you feel about my trip, here is my summary.
Despite facing significant challenges, Afghanistan has many positive aspects that deserve recognition: diverse landscapes, rich history, warm hospitality, delicious cuisine, resilient people, and more!
Safety:
This was the biggest concern of many people I have talked to, and naturally, that has been the main worry when you enter a war-torn country over the last 40 years. With the takeover of the Taliban, the country is much safer than before; at least no conflicts are going on.
My Persian surname, which is the same as the current supreme leader of the Taliban, my cultural background, being a man with a +3 years long beard, and looking like one of the locals do not qualify me to talk about safety much when it comes to being a tourist. I had a significant advantage, considering the above.
Disclaimer: This is not a travel advisory. Afghanistan has a government that has not been recognized by any country, with no embassies and international relations. I am a professional traveler who explored the country with an organized guide.

The Buddha statues in Bamyan, Afghanistan, were towering symbols of historical and cultural significance. Carved into the cliffs during the 6th century CE, they stood as iconic representations of Buddhism's rich heritage. These statues were more than just works of art; they were revered religious symbols. The larger of the two stood at an impressive 53 meters, making it one of the tallest standing Buddha statues globally. Pilgrims from across the world traveled to Bamyan to seek spiritual enlightenment. The Buddha statues were not just Afghan treasures but also part of our shared human heritage, showcasing the fusion of Greco-Buddhist influences. However, their destruction in 2001 by the Taliban shocked the world. It was seen as an attack on global culture and sparked international condemnation. Efforts have since been made to rebuild or recreate the statues, not merely as a physical restoration but as a testament to the resilience of cultural heritage. While the original statues may never return, the memory of Bamyan's Buddha statues continues to inspire the protection and celebration of cultural treasures worldwide. Their loss reminds us of the importance of preserving our diverse and invaluable heritage.

that's why they destroyed it. why a man being a great creature would pray and bow down to a man-made statue? another reason is there is always a chance of converting such places into sacred and holy places where people accept that statue as GOD!But this is Sirk.

Afghans have been practicing Islam for hundreds of years, well before the emergence of the Taliban in 1996. It is important to note that the destruction of the Buddha statues in 2001 occurred five years into the Taliban's rule. Islam promotes tolerance and respect for other religions. Quran states, (And as for My messenger,) there is no (obligation) on him except to deliver (the message). God knows what yon expose and what conceal”. (5:99). "There is no compulsion in (accepting) the religion (of Islam)…” (2:256). “O you who do not believe! I worship not what you worship, and you are not worshiping what I worship; nor am I worshiping what you worship; neither art you worshiping what I worship. Therefore, to you your religion; and to me my religion!” (109:1-6). Some Afghan political analyst suggests that the destruction of the Buddha statues was politically motivated rather than driven by religious reasons. If Afghans had intended to destroy the statues for religious reasons, they could have done so long before. Similarly, if the Taliban's motivation was purely religious, they could have taken action when they came to power in 1996, rather than waiting for five years. While there is no denying the presence of extremist elements within the Taliban, their actions have been widely condemned by Muslim religious scholars worldwide. However, it is worth noting the perceived double standards in global responses. The world condemns the Taliban for destroying the Buddha statue however, the destruction of the historical Babri Masjid in India, carried out by the BJP party currently in power, received less international attention and condemnation. Similarly, concerns arise that the international community will remain relatively silent if the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem is ever destroyed by Israeli actions. Consistency in addressing such issues is essential. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hqmfz9Kde7GsZ6Q.html

I’m a French born British national from Roman Catholic background, but I converted to Sikhism. And as a Sikh, I believe we should respect every religious tradition. I felt very upset when the Taliban decided to destroy this amazing world heritage, but also heritage of Afghanistan . We should follow our beliefs, while respecting other religions. Over zealous religious fanatics are the problem. You have to use common sense and your inner good that god gave you naturally to address these conflicts. Aukana Buddha statue can be described as a Buddha statue that resembles Bhamian Buddha statues. The Avukana statue is a standing statue of the Buddha near Kekirawa in North Central Sri Lanka. The statue, which has a height of more than 14 m (46 ft), depicts the Buddha with a hand raised in reassurance, a variation of the Abhaya mudra. The Avukana statue is one of the best examples of a standing statue built in Sri Lanka. It is now a popular tourist attraction.

Dear Davud, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for sharing this video with us. I've been an avid follower of your channel for some time now, and this particular video has deeply touched my heart. It's truly heart-wrenching to witness the destruction of a world heritage site that once stood as a source of immense pride for Afghanistan. The decision to obliterate these peaceful and historically significant Buddhist sites, which held a rich and glorious history, was a drastic one. The belief that such actions could bring justice to the current and future generations is both perplexing and disheartening. In reality, it has deprived the present and future generations of an invaluable opportunity to learn about the splendid Buddhist history that once graced this region. I am profoundly moved by your kind and empathetic words throughout this video. Your sadness over the destruction of these colossal Buddha statues resonates with the sentiments of many moderate Muslims and people of diverse backgrounds. The irony of now conserving what was once mercilessly dismantled is indeed palpable. The caves you showcased must have served as serene meditation sanctuaries for the monks of that era. I can't help but wonder about the beauty they once held inside. Once again, I extend my heartfelt thanks to you for shedding light on this important issue. It's always a pleasure to witness the natural beauty of a country, even in the face of such adversity. I hope that one day, I'll have the opportunity to visit this place in person. Furthermore, I sincerely hope that these historical sites will be open to Buddhist communities from around the world, free from any religious or cultural divides. After all, religion should be a unifying force among humans, not a divisive one. Thank you for your dedication to preserving and sharing these significant stories with the world. Warm regards, Bhante Sumitta

I was here in 1978 - as a Sri Lankan Buddhist, it was an amazing site. The Bhamiyan Buddhas were completely unknown in Sri Lanka. We had to travel , I think, close to 200km on a gravel road. Even then the faces of the Buddhas were sliced off. I believe, as Buddhists, we have to accept change as the only truth. But Viyapada -- ill will - is a human condition that the needs to be eradicated as per Buddha's Teachings. A statue is only a representation. It is not the Buddha nor the Dhamma.

As a Buddhist and a lover of art and history, it is with profound sadness and anger that I reflect on the tragic destruction of the Buddha statues of Bamiyan by the Taliban. This act of cultural vandalism, which took place in 2001, has left an indelible mark on the world's cultural and religious heritage, and it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preserving our shared history. The Buddhas of Bamiyan were not just statues; they were a testament to the rich and diverse history of Afghanistan and its long-standing connection to Buddhism. These colossal statues, carved into the cliffs of the Bamiyan Valley in central Afghanistan, stood as silent witnesses to over 1,500 years of history. They were magnificent examples of Gandhara art, a fusion of Greek, Persian, and Buddhist influences that flourished in the region. These statues were not only objects of beauty but also symbols of tolerance and coexistence. For centuries, they had withstood the test of time, serving as a source of inspiration and wonder for travelers, pilgrims, and scholars from all corners of the world. The destruction of the Buddha statues in 2001 was a devastating blow to humanity. The Taliban's actions not only robbed the Afghan people of a priceless cultural treasure but also highlighted the brutal intolerance and ignorance that can drive such acts of iconoclasm. The world watched in horror as these irreplaceable artifacts were reduced to rubble, and it was a grim reminder of the need to protect our shared heritage. While the physical statues are gone, their memory lives on. Efforts to reconstruct or preserve the site as a testament to the past and a symbol of hope for the future are ongoing. The loss of the Buddha statues of Bamiyan serves as a rallying cry for the preservation of cultural heritage worldwide. It reminds us of the importance of education, dialogue, and understanding among different cultures and religions. As a Buddhist, I mourn the loss of these great Buddhas, but I also hold onto the hope that their destruction can serve as a catalyst for positive change. Let us remember the Buddha of Bamiyan not only for what was lost but also for what we can learn from this tragic event. It is a stark reminder that we must cherish and protect our shared cultural heritage, for it is a testament to the diversity, beauty, and resilience of human civilization.

I had a big uninterest upon Afghanistan due to this destruction and since I watching your videos only I have a interest and good impression upon Afghan people. As I thought, when you arrived to Afghanistan you showed us the Bamiyan Buddha statues. When I see this I recalled all the carvings in Sri Lanka specially Thiwanka Pilima geya, Lanka Thilaka in Polonnaruwa. Those statues were also destroyed by Kalinga Magha who was from India. Anyway this is a very heart felt video as I am Buddhist and it compel me to watch again how the Talaibhan destroy those statues. Finally I could say "No one can destroy the Lord Buddha" and what they destroy is their ancestors' believes, their heritage and future.

Hopefully you will make it back to India and Nepal soon. Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha. India has amazing Hindu /Buddhist/Jain architectural/archaeological sites- Ajanta Ellora Caves in Mahatashtra, Hampi in Karnataka to name a few.

Now only I finished watching your video. Just like a first-hand experience. Thank again Davud. I think this place should have been a so massive monastery. We cannot find a such a massive place in Sri Lanka also. (Dambulla and Dimbulaagala caves are also large). I mean see the number of caves in the mountains and also when you think about the height of the Statues. Thousands of monks would have lived there. As the most of the monks at the time were Arhath, they had supernatural abilities like teleportation. They can live in those caves up there even if there are no roads or paths to reach there. According to Sri Lankan history books, it is said that hundreds of thousands of monks from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have visited Anuradhapura at the time of laying foundation for the Ruwanweli Maha Stupa. Back then Saudi was named Sunaaparantha, a famous Arhath Monk from Sunaaparantha is called "Punna" Arahath Thero. The story is there in thripitaka. When Punna thero wanted to visit Saudi, he wanted to get the permission from the Buddha. Then, Buddha has said that the people in that area are very rude. How do you face these kinds of rude people. Punna thero has said that if people there blamed me, I would not get angry thinking that they did not hit me with their hands. And if they hit him, he would not get angry thinking they did not attacked with branches of trees. Like wise, Punna thero has said so many ways of keeping calm when people are rude and aggressive to him. So finally the Buddha has allowed Punna thero to visit Sunaaparantha which is Saudi Arabia. At that time also, people in Saudi and that area have been rude and very aggressive. Anyway after Punna thero preached Dhamma to these people, they have become buddhists. Hundreds of thousands of people there have become monks and become Arhath. Arhath monks have visited Anuradhapura by teleportation (disappearing from Sunaparantha and appearing in Anuradhapura).

Distance from Afganistan to greek is about 4000 km while distance from Afganistant to Saudi is about 2400km. If Buddhism was spread to Greek for a distance of 4000km, there was no chance of spreading buddism to Saudi? The time I mentioned a long before Islam came into existance. Punna thero was an arhath thero who lived during the times of the Buddha. In the story says Punna thero meditated (parambulated) at a temple near sea. So, this "temple near sea" should be there in the middle of the land i guess?.
