I like this one also, it's pretty much a harmless action-adventure that may look a little dated, that's all. Near the beginning of the video, Doug said some stuff about the old live-action Jungle Book from the 90s that I didn't agree with him on, but that's okay too. I'm not gonna get mad just because someone doesn't like a movie that I grew up loving.

they don't hate the film, why does everyone assume this with every film the nostalgia critic gives his opinion on and the opinion just happens to not be overtly positive and exaggerated, they both said the movie was "ok." They said some parts of it was pretty much just mindless garbage, cinema junk food if you will, because the film is that but they're still okay with it because it's all just harmless fun. In my opinion the film is dated, but you can still easily enjoy ti by getting friends over and just having a good time with some popcorn. As Rob said it was a pretty alright "waste of time." Don't take their words for their literal meaning.

Idk if this counts as "trying to be all that great" but in the special features of the DVD they go on and on about the CGI for the mummy. How long it took, how "revolutionary" it was for the time etc. Idk how much of that is actually true, but they seem genuine. If you can find the making of/behind the scenes stuff def watch it, it's fascinating. Also b/c this movie is good but flawed I found watching all the behind the scenes stuff didn't spoil the movie for me (it sometimes can keep me from "forgetting" it's a movie). Hope you don't mind my rambling, lame ass reply. Thanks! :D

I discovered these movies when I was a child and I loooved them, for a while it got me obsessed with ancient egypt and I loved Evelyn, she was a "smart" woman and I liked that, I could identify with that and I found her so badass fighting in the sequel (I was young okay, I was just so hyped to see a woman fight for once). Sure, when I look at them now I can see that they have some flaws, but they are still very fun to watch if you can look at them without taking it too seriously.

I honestly really liked Sommers Jungle Book film. I would argue he was actually on a roll in the 90s with Jungle Book, Huck Finn and The Mummy all being fun adventure flicks. It was in the 2000s where he went into CGI overload and that just killed whatever charm his films had (although I will giving credit to The Mummy Returns for the way it turned Eve from a damsel in distress to a badass action heroine. Van Helsing and GI Joe though, just...ugh) Also, I have to disagree with Doug about the Phantom Menace being the main reason why people liked this film (especially considering that that film was actually very well recieved when it was released. It took a while for the backlash to really settle in). If that were true The Mummy wouldn't be looked on so fondly today. I think its a perfect example of a fun summer popcorn flick, not unlike many of the Marvel studios films, but with a nice horror edge to it that gave it a more urgent pace. The characters were likable (heck, considering when this came out that it even had character was impressive) there were some pretty funny moments it was beautifully shot and it actually tried to so some pretty advanced effects for the time (trying to blend CGI on real life humans was still pretty new and I remember scene like a bug crawling into a whole in Imoteps cheak getting quitea reaction from a lot of people).

Could you tell me an example of one of those films that uses too much CGI, or will any of his work in the 2000's do the trick. I'm really confused on why CGI is such a bad thing cause I'm a musician and the use of digital tools to create art is not thought of anywhere near as badly there, in fact it's often just not an issue and is taken as a given. In comparison film makers, and the audience to quite a strong degree, seem to really sneer at the digital tools available and it strikes me as odd that in another artistic medium such as film it's frowned upon so commonly. Is it just elitism or something? And those GI Joe films really confuse me. All the superficial stuff that I typically like and should be entertaining to me is all there, but it just comes across as a really boring, unengaging mess and I don't know how it manages it. It can't be the lack of solid plot or characters cause c'mon, it's a kids show at the end of the day so it's kind of hard to criticise on that front. Maybe it's the lack of Cobra Commander's epic voice, lol. Someone should dub him in.

I find the idea that because a film used CGI and so will age badly because of it really funny and quite poor criticism given how much more common CGI has gotten over the years. Not saying it doesn't look cartoony in the Mummy but so long as it still looks good I don't see a problem, and it definitely looks good for the most part. I find this a really odd thing to not only complain about, but to focus on as a main criticism of a film, but then I'm not a movie critic so maybe there is something I'm missing?

I wish the actual review was a little bit more like this. The review seemed like a childish rant about people liking this one more than the 'classics'. Perhaps it would have been better if the jokes NC made weren't overused and pointed out flaws everyone had already pointed out. The first viewing video got more laughs out of me than the review. And I liked how they acknowledged the good aspects of the mummy with the use of practical effects instead of ranting about the above average CGI from 20 years ago. And they didn't even touch on why the mummy works as a remake (because it meets all of Doug's good remake criteria), though they might do it while talking about the mummy (2017).

  • @Grays_Plays

    @Grays_Plays

    6 жыл бұрын

I thought the bit bitching about this "original" still being a remake was funny personally, and I'm definitely going to check out the original because of it. The bit that gets stale in my opinion is the whining about how old CGI looks like CGI, lol. They do it in every single review and it gets boring really quick considering how much less the film could of done without it. The tone of the film would of been very different if the whole thing was done with style of what they did when the "real" mummies appeared. I really don't understand this complaint about CGI as if it's somehow insulting to the viewers. It drastically opens up what you can do with a film, and granted it can look cartoony, (especially older CGI like in this film,) but we all know the film isn't real so what's the problem. In music no one complains about MIDI so long as it sounds good (a few purists do, but no one takes them seriously outside of styles that specifically go for stripped down sounds,) and I would expect the same rules to apply to film. Surely so long as it looks good it is good?

Gray The fact that the original for most of us is a remake could have been played up as a joke and the opening did that, so it was good. But it felt like Doug had a problem with people like the Faser version more than the versions he likes and therefore decided to take a dump on the movie. That was what I didn't like. Sometimes I agree with Doug about the CGI complaints because in recent movies CGI is being used more than necessary and it's starting to feel like the filmmakers were too lazy to work with practical effects. But the CGI wasn't overused in the Mummy because when this movie came out CGI wasn't as widespread. And the movie had a ton of practical effects as well. I've watched the movie many times and the CGI only pulled me out of the movie just once or twice. It's not that distracting to the viewer, in my opinion. If he had just said the effects didn't hold up and moved on it would have been much better, because we all know the CGI in the Mummy wasn't perfect. It was shot 20 years ago. No need to hammer it in.

Even critics are entitled to their opinions. I agree that I think he preferred the original and is putting down the Fraser version a little unfairly by comparison, but then he is perfectly entitled to do so as he is human and has his tastes just like the rest of us, but obviously those of us that are used to that version will disagree or find it distasteful. I personally have no issue with CGI at all so long as it looks good, even if laziness is a factor on the part of the producers. Granted practical effects look very different and preferable in many situations so I do like seeing them, but my fundamental point of view is that nothing on the screen is "real" anyway so what's this philosophical elitism with practical effects over digital ones? I agree that if they're that distracting it can pull you out of the movie, but very seldom have I found a movie that I was taking so seriously that a funny looking animation ruined the entire experience for me. It's just a film, lol. I love the CGI in the Mummy dated looking or not, cause in my opinion it really adds to the fantasy element of it all, even the goofy looking stuff. Like I said earlier, the film would of been very different in tone, (in a more serious and less enjoyable way in my opinion,) had all the cartoony fantasy of the digital effects been replaced with practical effects and realism as the focus. In a film about an undead Egyptian warrior realism is not often going to be a good approach, haha.

  • @Grays_Plays

Moonymoster, I think with the Mummy it was playing on the fantasy type look that the digital effects gave it. It worked in my opinion whether it was a deliberate choice or not. I guess it's kind of like the synthetic sound of a lot of 80's rock, a lot of people love it even though it sounds very of it's time. To criticise it specifically because it still sounds like 80's rock seems silly to me, as it's purely down to a matter of taste whether it's good or bad given that that was what the artistic goal for it to sound like was. I feel the same way with film, and this argument that all films need to look real or believable to be good or enjoyable is a bad one in my personal opinion. Jurassic Park definitely aged better though, no argument there. It still looks decent from any point of view, but then it isn't playing on the magical fantasy type themes the Mummy is, so a direct comparison is probably a little unfair.

The Mummy Returns had the right balance of seriousness and absurdity like what I think the Indiana Jones film's were aiming for (before becoming better than what they intended to be). I still watch the Scorpion King though.

(I can't remember the scene where the scarab crawls into his mouth too much though so no opinion). The practical scenes though like when they're holding the line in the opening and the boat fight are some of my favorite moments in this film and the boat scene is probably one of my personal all time favs in action movies.

The Sphinx is actually a real prop the used a green screen backdrop on to put it in the CGI scene as well as insert workers on the real girders. The model itself was about as big as a person on the shorter end of the average spectrum and they even used it in the old Universal Special Effect Stage Show to demonstrate a blend of practical and visual effects that while now look dated were stitched together quite well.

Honestly, yeah the actual Mummy doesn't look real, but it looks _cool._ Sometimes it's ok for something to look cool over looking real, like when something in a pre-90s movie is an obvious stop-motion creature or a matte effect, but the thing it's portraying is well-designed enough that you don't really care. It also helps that he's still partially a dude in makeup that they added CG on to, which makes him look a little more 3-dimensional.

The only issue i find with the CGI of the mummy is the unnecessary movement of the CGI mummy, it creates and entirely different character for imothep than what he is actually is like once he turns back to human. It is true he isnt too scary either, but i think the design was on point, this move did have a huge impact on me when i was a kid, so i wouldnt say it failed in any way. When Doug said that a lot of movie use CG over practical nowadays I just realized something, I am so glad that the Star wars movies (even the prequels) still use practical effects. That alien in Jyn's cell in Rogue one, that was someone in a suit. The alien pilots in Force awakens and all the aliens and droids in Maz's castle, all of those guys were puppets or costumed actors except for Maz. The X wings, The Millenium Falcon, the big ships, the TIES were all there and actual sets. The sparks from Kylo ren's mood swings were actual sparks. That's why I loved the Lord of the rings over the Hobbit, all those orcs were actually there in the first trilogy and they used huge miniatures for the sets like Minas Tirith. You can actually go to Hobbiton right now and tour where the film was shot.

I love this movie and its sequel so much! But I also love your sense of humour, so I can still enjoy watching you tear my favourite movies apart.

I saw this as a child and the idea of stuff freaked me out more than the effects. The bugs, the guys eyes and tongue being removed. Ugh.

My friends and I were debating which movie to watch one night, and one of them suggested 2017’s Mummy movie. I was completely against it, but one of my friends was like “How do you know it’s bad? “Reviews don’t count. Did you see it? No? Then how do you know?” I was just like no, because I knew that movie would be painful to go through.
