The Multifaceted History of the Jackson House State Park Heritage Site (Pacific Northwest History)

In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, our White German Shepherd Dog, Thora and I visit the Jackson House State Park Heritage Site. The Jackson House State Park Heritage Site is a small park in Lewis County, Washington, containing the restored home of John R. and Matilda Jackson. The Jackson’s were some of the first Euro-American settlers north of the Columbia River. This was the first courthouse in the Washington Territory, where the first court case was held and the location of the first convention to propose the creation of Washington Territory in 1852. The Jackson homestead was visited by yet to be Civil War generals, Ulysess S. Grant, George McClellan and Philip Sheridan. The Jackson House was an important stop on the northern section of the Oregon trail on the way to New Market (Tumwater). The cabin you see here today is a restore building. The restoration utilized as much of the original building’s materials as possible. Please join us as we visit this small location with a large history, the Jackson House State Park Heritage Site.

That's a pretty cool historical nugget, do you know what brought the future generals there?

After the treaty of 1846 between Britain and the USA was signed, Oregon Territory became solely under the control of the USA. The future generals were sent out here to build military infrastructure and evaluate the best way to defend such a far away territory.

Great episode and hi Thor! It is interesting seeing the different pioneer cabin styles. Herr in Texas a lot of the cabins are Dogtrot style to allow for a cool breeze to pass through the house. Do they ever have the cabin open?

I can't find any information on opening times... so maybe it's not accessible to the public. Yea, I think the goal up here is to stop all cool breezes from entering (accept during the summer). 🙂 I told Thora you said hello! BTW, just got home from filming some segments of our 1855-56 Puget Sound Indian War video. The video is turning into quite the production for us... filming at multiple locations... Basically, as we do another video, we pick up a Puget Sound War site in the vicinity. I am hope it turns out!

@@searchingforhistory I am excited for the Puget Sound Wars episode. I am guessing it will be amazing! Thanks for saying hi to Thora for me. Hopefully we will cross paths or do a collab someday and I can meet her in person. 😀

That would be cool! Hopefully, she chills out by then. You should have seen the 20 takes it took Erin to say her segment with Thora wrapping the leash around Erin and pulling every which way! 🙂

More goodest puppers in history videos are always appreciated - especially when they're doing a rambunctious and/or uncooperative 😄
