The Claquato Ghost Town (Exploring a Forgotten Pioneer Town) - Pacific Northwest History

In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, our White German Shepherd Dog, Thora and I visit the pioneer ghost town of Claquato. Claquato, a pioneer town founded in 1853, was an early community in Oregon and Washington Territory. It was the original county seat for Lewis County and an important stop along the northern section of the Oregon trail to New Market (Tumwater). While most of the buildings in Claquato are gone, it still has its 1858 church with a bronze bell that came around the tip of South American from Boston in 1857. In the 1870s, most of the town moved to Chehalis when the railroad by-passed Claquato. Claquato also has an old pioneer cemetery that is exceptionally beautiful and worth taking a look at. Please join us as we visit the Claquato Ghost Town.

Poor little Claquato was abandoned after the railroad bypassed it and instead was built in nearby Chehalis. I really loved the old church! Have you ever been to Claquato?

Thank you, I just loved the little church with the crown on top. I have probably driven right past it and not even noticed. I so appreciate you pointing out this historical experiences in the area.

Loved the intro… hi Thora. Have there been many archeological digs there? Would be curious what they found? The crown was so interesting. First for me. The cemetery was cool. I am always fascinated by them and the stories they contain. Thanks for another great episode and for teaching us something new about your area.

To my knowledge, no. It's all private property. It would be interesting to look for evidence of the structures!
