Discovering Fort Henness: Why Was There a Pioneer Fort on the Thurston County Prairie?

In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, our white German Shepherd Dog, Thora and I visit the site of the old pioneer fort, Fort Henness. The Fort Henness site is located out on the prairie north of Rochester, in Thurston County, Washington. Fort Henness was a large stockade with two bastions built in 1855, during the 1855 Washington Indian War. The fort, named after Captain Benjamin Henness of the Washington Territorial Volunteers was built by local settlers. 30 families lived in the fort for 16 months from 1855 to 1856. Despite the fact the fort is long gone, if you live in or around Thurston County, Washington, it is very much worth your time to drive out and contemplate what life would have been like living in a pioneer fort. Please join us as we visit Fort Henness.

Other than the Lewis & Clark expedition, we never learned much of anything about the history of the PNW from back in Virginia. Thanks for the tour!

I can see that. Even growing up here I think we learned more about east coast history. 🙂Erin and I are having fun learning about the local history around us. I will be honest though, I am looking forward to our next journey out of state! Thanks for watching!

I like the comparison between the forts. That's a great way to show likenesses and differences.

The site doesn't have much to see, well, other than a sign, it doesn't have anything to see. I figured I needed to show an example of what it may have looked like. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, Everad!

I figured I needed to show something to help the imagination, as the site has little on its own to see. I was really excited to find an artifact, albeit a super small artifact that provides evidence the fort was actually there. Our fuzzy side kick is "Thora", a now 7 month old white German shepherd that is quite the handful! We plan to have her in many more videos. Thanks for watching!
