The Pacific Northwest - Fort Eaton & the Willamette Meridian (a trek through 1850s Pioneer History)

Fort Eaton was built in 1855, during the 1855 Washington Indian War and abandoned as a fort in 1856. Next to the Fort Eaton monument is the Willamette Meridian monument.
In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, and I visit the site of the old pioneer fort, Fort Eaton. We also take a look at a Willamette Meridian monument that is located next to the Fort Eaton monument. The Fort Eaton site is located off Yelm Highway, on Eaton Prairie, southeast of Olympia, in Thurston County, Washington. Fort Eaton was built in 1855, during the 1855 Washington Indian War and abandoned as a fort in 1856. The fort was named after Nathan Eaton whose Donation Land Claim the far was built upon. Next to the Fort Eaton monument is the Willamette Meridian monument, which tells the story of a General Land Office survey crew that surveyed a line (the Willamette Meridian) through this location from near Portland, Oregon to Puget Sound in 1851. Despite the fact the fort is long gone, if you live in or around Thurston County, Washington, it is worth your time to drive out and make a quick stop to contemplate what life would have been like living in a pioneer fort and working as a surveyor in 1851. Please join us as we visit Fort Eaton.

Really enjoying the 1855 sites. Could you do an overview episode of the war? I think that would be fascinating. Also enjoyed the geography lesson. Awesome! I did miss the fuzzy member of your crew in this episode. 😀

There is a battlefield site near Puyallup. Its a field with a marker. Not much going on there, however, I think that would be a good place where we could do an overview. The Fort Eaton site is close to home, so we left Thora (our fuzzy crew member) at home to run to Fort Eaton for a quick video. With that being said, our goal is to have Thora in lots of the videos but she sure doesn't like to cooperate when the record is going! lol

@@ExploreTayo I have been putting together an outline for the video. It is a large story that we are going to try tell a summary of. I want the video to be quick paced but also have enough information to be respectful to and tell the story of the participants (as best we can). The video will span multiple locations. It will be interesting to see if we can pull it off. 🙂
