This situation was frequently possible. Idk how the ballot rules are now, but ballots always had outdated info on them based on the previous year and it always drove me bonkers

Paul Molitor started at 2B for the ASG in 1988 and was the 1B for the team all seaaon long. The team actually started him at 2B for one game right before that break to get some practice in. when it was known he'd be starting there.

This reminds me of Palmeiro winning The Gold Glove at first when he was a DH all year, just because the league wanted to spite Tino Martinez

Palmiero did play 28 games at 1B that year, but that remains the worst choice for a major award in MLB history. Surreal.

Those late 70s early 80s Brewers were great. Ben Oglivie, Cecil Cooper, Ghorman Thomas, Paul Monitor, Robin Yount. Great offense.

This definitely wasn't Money's fault. MLB must not have been able to update Money's position in time to get everything current. This is 1978 we're talking about. This is a lot less likely to happen today.

You forgot to mention Robin Yount. Two time AL MVP.

Yount played in surprisingly few All-Star games. Like, 2 or 3 in his whole career.

Love these baseball stories

Don Money started with the Phillies. He played 3rd base and shortstop. He was a good player but unfortunately he got crowded out by Mike Schmidt and Larry Bowa. Don Money also lives in my hometown. I used to play softball with his son. He was the first player to hit a homerun at Veterans Stadium in 1971.

I wish you would have explained why Don Money was playing first base that year. It was Paul Molitor’s sensational rookie year, and the Brewers had him playing second base. First baseman Cecil Cooper was out with an injury - a broken leg, I think - so they moved Money to first.

Rookie Paul Molitor took over Milwaukee 2nd base in 78. Don Money played either 2nd or 3rd every year to accommodate the Brewers’ best options at either 2nd or 3rd. Howard Cosell broadcast for the Brewers but still didn’t know baseball. AL fans regularly voted in undeserving players in the 70s.

Money was the starting 2B for Milwaukee in 77, so the Aaron Judge comparison does not apply.

It’s unlikely that it would be Rollie Fingers since he was a relief pitcher

The Judge comparison is more like Judge playing CF instead of RF since Money was more than capable of playing 2B. The problem wasn't that Money was voted in at 2nd. The problem is that MLB allowed voting way too early in the season.

You have to remember that this was well before the internet, all of the ballots were printed early in the season, with positions being primarily assigned based on where players played the previous year. To reprint all of the ballots (which IIRC were punchcards) for position changes would have been prohibitively expensive. I guess they could have voided Money's votes because he wasn't a second baseman, but that would have caused an uproar for being undemocratic. Also, even though he shouldn't have been a second baseman, Money was a legitimate All-Star, there have been far more egregious examples of players who were in the right position, but were having very poor years which shouldn't have landed them anywhere near the All-Star Game.

In all my years voting online, though, they similarly never updated the ballots. Granted, it's been a few years since I've voted, so maybe they changed really recently. But it didn't go away with the internet or even social media. Very strange

That's Eddie Money.

I remember Reggie winning starting OF with the Angels although I think he was mostly playing DH by then. Sure enough the first ball hit to him in RF that night rolled right past him. Point is, the All Star game is for the fans, so these matters never seemed too consequential in those days. In contrast to the NFL Pro Bowl abortion, everyone loved the MLB all star game.

Money missed the 77 all star to injury and never got in the 74 game, so I’m fine with him starting.

So 10 games at second base before Allstars game so roughly 12%. But you also mentioned that something like two games after April 24. So 8 games in first 3 weeks of season. And he played all season at second base the year prior. I know ballots are printed early so probably around April 24 seems like a logical guess. So a guy who up until that point played almost half his games at 2nd and played all last year at 2nd. Seems like the ballot writers made a safe assumption to list him as a second baseman. And very likely something caused him to move to first base, possibly a minor injury, or maybe the manager had better depth in the middle of the infield , but not a reliable firstbaseman, so moved him there to keep his bat in the lineup. In any event, at the time of the ballot finalization, having him listed at 2nd base would not have been a controversial call. Players do change positions during a season. It just happened to he late April with him.

Bingo. Cecil Cooper was the regular 1B but only played 107 games that season, so he must have got hurt. Money played some more games at 2B in the second half. Brett was just a jerk.

I get where George Brett was coming from, wanting his teammate to be the starter at second, but it's not like Money was playing like trash. Should he have been listed at second? Probably not, but I'm guessing the MLB made those ballots before the season and the last season he played over 100 games at the position. I don't think this is the craziest starter in ASG history, since I've seen some starters in my lifetime (aka after this happened) that were voted in solely on name recognition and nothing else

Does anybody remember the ballots? I would get a ton of them at the Pawtucket Red Sox games and punch them all out as the game went on. Go to a few games and you get the idea.

I always liked George Brett as a player but he seems like a total d-bag.

This guy does great football commentary. But, if this is the best he can do on baseball, he needs to give it up. This controversy happens practically every season. This is nothing new. There is no reason that Money couldn't play 2nd base, even though he played 1st that season. He is actually listed as a career 3rd baseman. He played 1st, 2nd, 3rd, SS, and LF throughout his career. Lots of players have played multiple positions throughout their careers.

No offense to the actual man, he seems cool, but “Don Money” sounds like a wannabe rapper’s name 😂

Peculiar video. Is there a reason why you never actually showed Money hitting the the ball?

I knew instantly this was the Don Money 2nd base All Star game. Being born in the mid 60's I LOVED baseball, but the All-Star game was as important as my birthday or Christmas to me. This is a game I'll sadly never forget because I didn't get to see it. My family had just moved to a farmhouse and decided to plant a garden. It really wasn't doing well so my parents were just letting it go to try again the next year. Right as the game was about to start my grandmother come over and told me I had to pick everything from the garden right now! I tried begging off but she told me i could watch another game later, not understanding the importance of this night in my life. I picked 'vegetables' (all bug eaten) until 9:30 at night when she finally left. As soon as she drove off my dad told me just throw everything away. 🥺🥹😢😭😭😭😰😣😖😠😡🤬🤬🤬
