Mazda's CX-90 is exactly what they promised: a Mazda alternative to a Lexus or an Acura. Thanks to the new RWD platform, the CX-90 is more dynamic than a Lexus TX, and the interior is more pleasing to my eye as well. There's just one little problem: it doesn't actually fix the biggest complaint about the CX-9 it replaces, which is that it's still a little small on the inside...

Alex- I have had my CX90 (still the Signature in Canada) since the first week of July. You got what so many other reviewers missed. The driving dynamics is much better than all the competition not to mention styling. My only gripe is that reviewers always talk about head room in “family” 3 row SUV’s. In most families the parents are in the front seats and the kids sit in the 2nd or 3rd row to keep them separated. If you use it like that there is more than enough room in the 3rd row. I also owned a 2020 Explorer ST and traded it in for the Mazda. The CX90 handles better not to mention the fit, finish and materials of the interior. The Explorer interior is a joke. I think I also had 8 recalls with it over 3 years.

The 3rd is for kids. And I have not seen adults seating in the 3rd row in a full-size SUV.

I never understood the obsession with rating 3rd row space based on a 6 foot man sitting back there. That scenario almost never happens. Families put kids back there. I have a CX-9 and my girls would ask to sit back there even with the 2nd row empty. Those "tight" seats are actually big to the child they're intended for.

Excellent point! We call it family SUV as the product's core target segment is families with non-adult kids, but we give a low rating when adults cannot fit in the 3rd row. What percentage of familes have 3+ adult kids that they haul around?😂

Completely agree with your comment, have a couple of friends having CX90, their experience to the car was beyond expectations! In terms of all alex reviews.
It’s amazing to see a company like Mazda with such limited resources, try so hard and produce such a great product like the CX90 and then on the other hand see Lexus, a company with all the money in the world and put in zero effort int here offerings/rebadging a Toyota. Really hope this sells well for Mazda, they deserve it
Great review, Alex. I appreciate hearing your second chance look at the CX-90 after the launch. Knowing that some of the drivetrain improvements have made their way into the production vehicles is great to hear. We have a CX-9 which we love. Being a family of three small people, it's just the right size for us. I think Mazda has simply picked its spot and isn't trying to be everything for everyone. There are many makes that provide roomier cabins, more towing and other features, but the CX-90 is looking for those who feel it's just right, like us. Our CX-9 is our first Mazda and likely not the last.

I’m with you. Family of 4 and I feel like it will be the perfect size for the 4 and 2 year old, plus all the stuff we travel with. Plus I wanted a comfortable daily driver for school runs, swim class and driving myself to work
We had a 2021 CX-9 and loved it, traded it in and bought the CX-90 and love it. Really enjoy the driving dynamics ride and handling, and really appreciate the wide tire width. Don’t find this tire width often, really grateful for that. Mazda is doing great! Have a Blessed Day!

275/45R21 … Mercedes,Audi,Range Rover all use this size … more common than you think?
I would argue that this Mazda is a great 2 row SUV that happens to have a 3rd row(for some reason). Just a second thought: that wet clutch will probably never wear out with the electric motor giving the initial push and keeping the clutch slip to a minimum.
Test drove this and the new Lexus TX since I was cross-shopping then. The Lexus TX four banger turbo engine sounded horrible. The turbo charged six in the Mazda sounds glorious. I agree with you Alex that the back is the ugliest side. But I disagree with you and think that the front and sides of the vehicle are gorgeous. Great proportions. Kudos to Mazda for caring about vehicle dynamics, Such as RWD, in-line 6, 50-50 weight distribution, wet-clutch, when all the competition cares about is interior size.

None of the negative about this vehicle bothers me. I’m 5’7” & my wife is 5’6”. We are empty nesters with no grandkids. The 3rd row would stay folded down. Our Frenchie could stay in the back in his crate (wouldn’t let him get on that beautiful leather interior. 😂 Plenty of room for our taller friends in the second row. This thing is gorgeous inside and out in my opinion. Fun to drive and a great road trip vehicle for us. Perfect. Excellent review. This car is the sweet spot for us.

Maybe look at the cx 70 then?
It's funny that everyone is passionate about an inline six and RWD, but then criticizes the issues that come with that layout. Mazda is still not perfectly premium but very close. They also don't offer the very last tech, but the one you find are definitely working well.

I completely agree. Some of the reviews on this excellent vehicle are so unfair. We need to see more reviews of this vehicle being compared to the more expensive RWD luxury vehicles it is trying to emulate.

Can Mazda come up with a Mazda 6 speed with this very powertrain and sporty driving dynamics to boot. That would be cool
We have rented one fora out a week on a trip with 3 kids. Overall great looks, feel of materials is nice, interior is nice and easy to use. It is just that this vehicle is for max 4 people. You look at it from outside and wonder where all the space went. We had to keep one of the 3rd row seats folded at all times to fit stuff. And fortunately none of my kids wear size 11 right now. So we made it work.

@@pete-bd5lj dude, I love it. If you can get a used one that was used a loaner at a dealer, that’s the way to go. I got a preferred plus trim, with the exterior and interior combo I wanted for $36,000. It had 3,800 miles on it, and it’s certified by Mazda. It’s an excellent value and I use it mainly as a 2 row, as I only have 2 little ones. I have used the 3rd row in a pinch, but just like all the reviews say, it’s tight back there. Other than that, it’s been in a road closing blizzard and it did great. It drives awesome and the base stereo is worlds better than my 2024 JLUR.

In Canada, the top of the line CX90 is cheaper than the Lexus TX by a significant difference. Take a look: Mazda is offering it at Canadian $66,503 (fully loaded Signature aka S Premium+) vs. Lexus TX for Canadian $83,535 (yes, the fully loaded TX gas model "Exec 6-passenger" top of the line Lexus is Canadian $83,535). Hybrid Lexus TX? Even more expensive. The Mazda CX90 seems like a bargain kn comparison. The only thing that is killing us in Canada right now is the insane interest rates to lease or finance.
I have had my CX90 PHEV since September and everything you say is right on the money. For me I wanted a little more room than your average 2 row but I know I probably will use the 3rd row only from time to time. What you say about the handling and ride, the premium "feel", and the "not huge" interior space is pretty much as it is. If you are looking for the roomiest family hauler then look elsewhere but for a "bigger than 2 row" SUV with good handling and efficiency it's a vehicle worth looking at. One point that often comes up in other reviews I've seen is the infotainment system. After owning it for a while it turns out that I actually prefer rotating wheel controller that Mazda uses for their infotainment system over the touch screen that I had in my previous vehicle. I know we are all used to our touch screen phones but I find the infotainment system's wheel controller is a lot less distracting than a touch screen when driving. It takes some getting used to and certainly when you first jump into it (as car reviewers do on a daily basis) you wonder how the heck does this work, but longer term I think it is a better system. Perhaps I'm just an oddball.

Alex, your reviews are always spot on… I found the interior of the higher trim level with the center console to be too small inside… Ended up buying a lower trim level with captains chairs for the roominess… I constantly bonk my head on the hatch when it is open 😂

Patiently awaiting the cx70 launch… I’ve passed on many a used rdx and gv70 in favor of waiting for mazda. I will say the SH-awd on the mdx and rdx is beastmode when driving in the Rockies especially during winter. My wife’s mdx has been bulletproof since we bought it in 2011.

I too am waiting for the CX70 launch. The question that I don't know has been answered is, how long is the 70? There were rumors in Q3 that it was going to be the same as the 90, but without the 3rd row seat. Then we started hearing that it would be a slightly longer CX60. Hopefully we see it soon. And hopefully it will have closer to 50 cu ft of cargo space behind the 2nd row (like the Honda Passport or VW Cross-whatever the 2-row is called) rather than 30 cu ft like most 2-row vehicles. If it's the latter, I'm not going to be very interested.

We finally got our answer about the CX70. Exactly the same size as the 90 but without a third row. Outside looks better. Clearly more of a direct attack at the X5. But kinda lazy by Mazda. Thoughts on the 70 from the group?

@@Ethanjbo135 yep I’ve made 100x posts on every KZread channel how this is the biggest fail from Mazda in a decade. The entire product team involved with design and conception phase should be fired. This should be a gv70 / rdx competitor not a cx90 clone with badging. Simply made a cx90 trim then fold down the 3rd row..

@@aceofspades6667I was kind of hoping for a "coupe-ified" version of the CX-90 to preserve the cargo space from a floor space perspective, namely square feet (I don't load higher than the top of the 2nd row seat, so a swooped down rear wouldn't impact my cargo space.) But we have to remember that Mazda is a *SMALL* car company that just spent a fortune on this new RWD platform, and so it will likely be a while until we see another size vehicle. Just my guess.
Great review, spot on with your commentary.. i have the PHEV version, and so far very good but for a few issues. I also hasa CX-9, and I think it had a bit more room...

I have the the cx90 phev premium i love it so far its a decent family hauler we rarely use the third maybe a few times a year. Its quick and fun for a mama who loves cars . i love the ride compared to its competitors which i drove as well. So far its a hit! I get so many compliments on it and double takes when I’m driving.
Thank you for adding the trim level prices but you need to bring back the features of each trim as well.
All longitudinal-placed rear-wheel drive platform is “small” in cabin place. That is just the intrinsic nature of a premium platform. People need a “big” car looks for Lexus ES (not GS), TX (not GX), Atlas (not Tourage).
Alex, The big 'takeaway' here is that everything the CX90 gives in Sport, compared to other CUVs, it takes away in Utility. 😉

How's the i-stop function? i don't like the stop and start when i rented a car. Hope this one goes smoothly or it can be turned off.
I’m fairly certain Mazda couldn’t produce nearly enough of these to try to compete head on with the mass market competitors. That was never their goal. They’ve been selling over 5,000/month which equates to about 30-40% more than they ever managed with the CX-9. Pretty sure that’s about what their goal was.
Alex, this method of testing legroom with seats all the way back will lead manufacturers to out smaller sliding rails. We need a better way, perhaps combined legroom like Lucid likes to measure.
I wish they allowed a 7 seat config in the upper config
Here in Canada, I would go for the Mazda CX-90 2024 in the base trim (GS) as I don't need all the BELLS AND WHISTLES or maybe just wait for the CX-70 as I don't really need a 3rd row. 😁
That's exactly how all engines should sit in an engine bay (longitudinally), but I'm old school like that. All of my current vehicles have longitudinally mounted engines including the WRX, Tacoma, and Duster (obviously). All are manuals too. I was interested in the CX-90 for my mom since she was car shopping. The inline longitudinally mounted 6 cylinder engine caught my interest (if you're a true enthusiast, you already know how well balanced inline 6's are), but the pseudo-hybrid transmission lost my interest quickly. Bummer!

Alex was very underwhelmed with the TX in his first drive. I highly doubt that him driving the 350 or 500h again will change his mind. He said the 350 is as slow as a Nissan rogue at over 8 seconds 0-60. The 500h is still slow at 0-60 of 6.3 seconds and that hybrid max system is not terribly smooth. He noticed the same thing in the grand highlander

I was just at my local Mazda dealership yesterday for a routine service on our CX-5. It looked like there were a million CX-90's on the lot out front and around back in every color available. I asked a sales guy how they were selling so far, and the look he gave me was one of concern. They certainly look good (overall) feel premium compared to the mainstream competition and having driven various Mazda's now for 17 years I'm sure the driving dynamics are a standout in the segment along with the new powertrain options. I think most shoppers are looking for a 3-row family vehicle are looking for more interior volume, more passenger room in the third row and more overall cargo space, i.e., Toyota Grand Highlander, Kia Telluride etc. Form and function over style and performance. It's not a minivan alternative nor is it going to sway BMW x5/x7 shoppers. Personally, I think they kind of missed the mark on this one, but I wish them well!

Thank you for your review, Alex, but I do not agree with your critical position. Mazda still has a lot of features to approve, but I'd be surprised if you showed me such amazing progress between two next generation models at Toyota/Honda/VW/Mercedes. Small auto company made a huge spet ahead in comparasing with autogiant.
Alex, apologies if I missed it in the review, but can you comment on the quickness of the steering and how that feels? I've heard that Mazda gives the CX-90 a slower ratio to allow for a more adjustable feel in corners. Any thoughts on that?

It's a little quicker feeling than average, but it's designed to be similar to the segment. So don't expect it to feel like a lotus or anything.
Has an aggressive price tag as well.. out of my price range at nearly $90K in Australia.
As much as I am enjoying my CX-5, the “90” is too car much for me. I’m waiting for the “70” as I’m sure it will have similar characteristics. Perhaps like the Volkswagen Atlas/Atlas Cross Sport? BTW, Alex, it looks like you’ve trimmed up a bit!
Great insight on start/stop and how that shows up better in this vehicle. Makes start/stop more palatable.
The plug in is the one to get. The transmission works a lot better with it

@@DM72513 what about after you run through the ev battery? What the acceleration and performance once the hybrid kicks in? Also doesn’t the efficiency of the hybrid take a hit after the battery dies? Since you have to carry around everything needed for an ev to go? Seems like you get way better efficiency if you just go straight ev or hybrid. I mean if you really only drive enough to get by on the 20-30 miles of a PHEV ev mode then you might as well get an ev and just charge up once a week.

Even on the top trim, there are optional packages you can add to the car. Fully loaded tops out around $68300

Dang I just realized the Honda Pilot’s 3rd row headroom (39.3”) is more than the 2nd row headroom for the CX-90 (38.4”). Why the difference here vs Mazda’s 39.3” measurement?
How do you compare this third row with the 2023 CX9?
They should have just kept the exterior look like the CX-9, because that thing really hasn’t aged. It’s a shame about the packaging, too. Big on the outside, small on the inside.
For some shoppers you wouldn't be able to but people in the 3rd row and a stroller behind them the trunk will not close.

$62k without options, so pretty easy to get their by adding simple things like splash guards, premium carpets (not included???) and electronic rearview mirror etc..

Alex, this is not a livery vehicle. The third row is for emergency or smaller children. Get over it. That said, could not agree more with you that Mazda failed on the front seats regarding lumbar, massage and thigh extension.

Another metric that would be really useful is to compare resale values. I bought a CX-9 last year for well below MSRP, and it's taken 30% nosedive in resale value. Granted, the used car market is in really bad shape but it really got me thinking.

Your CX-9 probably lost value at resale because of the deals offered on the vehicle. People don't realize that resale values are based, on part, on reductions available for people buying new

Great review as usual. However, the typical CX90 customer will consider a Pilot or a Grand Highlander ( and to a lesser extent a Telluride). This is not a luxury product so Lexus and Acura will not be in the mix. I would also not touch a Ford product since they decided to go the Stellantis way on quality control.

Might not be cross shopped with lexus, but definitely will with acura. Excluding the type s, this is very similar for less money and it has rwd with a bigger engine. Price is close enough for cross shopping.

News flash ! The PHEV is faster than the Turbo S. Car and Driver did formal testing on all CX 90 power trains. CX 90 PHEV 0-60 is 5.9 seconds. The Turbo S was 6.2. The difference is the big 177hp/199 tq electric motor. It is waay smoother and capable than the 18hp 48volt mild hybrid.😳😎. Best of both world baby.Their testing is more reliable and regimented than any KZreadrs " Butt dyno".
Mazda should revive the Efini brand, similar to how Hyundai established Genesis to separate their focus on different models.... If they had the resources 🙁

Mazda has stated that they are done with making minivans, they said that they are using SUVs to be their people movers going forward.
I'm now aware and at that age to when I hear, "New" whatever I tend to slant my view in terms of letting someone else become the pigeon for purchasing whatever the vehicle is. Your comments/observations regarding the drivers seats is not lost upon me. I've never found their seats particularly comfortable or WIDE enough either! In fact, that's the major rational why I passed on the latest CX-9. It's the damn drivers seating position just is not comfortable over any longer road trips.
I'm really curious about the servicing implications of that transmission placement. Also, apparently some of the engine belts are squeezed against the firewall instead of up front behind the grille? Hopefully those are all long-lasting components. (Mazdas do tend to be reliable as far as I know.)

The serpentine belt is in front behind the grille like normal lol

@@Jazc-mp889 LOL it's actually the timing chain that's in the back. I knew there was some kind of weirdness going on, just couldn't remember what.

@@Johnny_Socko yeah a timing chain should last on average 15-20 years and like 250k miles before needing any service.
Pretty sure the engine noise is fake. Pump into the cabin through the sound speakers. Really sad the reviewer missed that.
They need to retune the suspension to make it a bit softer and the transmission. Both I6 engines should be faster than but the transmission is holding it back.

Softer suspension means more shaking too which make people on rear seat car sick. Unless you go for electronic dynamically adjustable dampers, this is as good as it gets - I can confirm that as owner of a PHEV.

I said the Lexus tx sucked even before we saw it on June 8th. I kept saying it all over the internet yet everyone laughed. Alex even called me the internets biggest unapologetic Toyota hater.😂 Now he and all of you are just repeating what I’ve been saying yet none of you are giving me any credit for being right
We really wanted to get the CX-90, but it’s simply just not big enough for our family, it was just as huge as the Grand Highlander but with significantly less space on the inside. On the upside it did handle amazingly but that wasn’t enough to sway us, we don’t really need our 3-rownfamily hauler to be a canyon carver, we need it to be comfortable in all 3-rows and we were gladly willing to sacrifice that handling for a much better packed interior. I knew the CX-90 was smaller on the inside but I didn’t know it was even smaller than the regular Highlander. We should be getting our Lexus TX soon which should handle better than the Grand Highlander while still providing enough space 😊
better than Acura that tries too hard to look like a rear wheel drive car
It's a beautiful car no doubt, but you can't look at it as a Pilot, Atlas, Pathfinder, Highlander, etc., competitor. It's a 4-5 passenger vehicle with an emergency 3rd row, that's it. Think of it as a X5 with a 3rd row for a small child in a pinch. It's just too small to be considered as a viable option if you need all 3 rows. Also, Mazda just took a reduction on MSRPs realizing that $60K for the top trim is a tall ask.

and what are your thoughts and impressions?
Alex and others, can someone advise regarding the predicted durability and possible high cost of repairs for a relatively complicated power train?
Had a cx-90 when getting an oil change on my cx-9. Around town the cx-90 is so much rougher than the cx9. I was shocked at how disruptive the stop start was and how just unpolished it felt. Maybe it would have felt different if I took it out on the highway. Was not fun to drive around town.
I’d put this and the gv80 as the best Asian luxury suvs

3rd row are not made for adults at all. Get a Cx90. You will not regret it
CX-90 needs an adaptive suspension, the mission of a 3 row is not all out handling, especially when it sacrifices ride comfort, if you are using the third row everyday this is a tough sell I think

Better than giving your kids motion sickness like bobble head dolls. My wife rides in the 2nd row with our toddler all the time and has 0 complaints.

@@DM72513yeah Mazdas philosophy with suspension can only work in certain situations, like it works better over larger imperfections than smaller, but I feel people encounter more smaller imperfections on a day to day basis
I think I6 engine with a mild hybrid system is a mistake..

I own on and I love it
Inline 6 with turbo and @ 80% powering rearwheels. No debating, no guessing, while you got an inline 6 with turbo just a reversals what government set out for combustion obsolete. If the MDX has inline 6 with turbo, then there is no way the CX-90 would stance a chance.
I test drove a midrange model of the inLine V6 CX90 today and found the seats uncomfortable, the stereo weak and the road noise above 60 mph so prominent that I thought I left a back window cracked. I couldn’t wait to get back into my Durango when returning to the dealership. The Mazda had great build quality inside, but the lack of a fully functional touch screen turned me off. Trying to make adjustments with the turn dial coupled with the small, narrow screen was tricky. Last, I think the CX90 is more attractive than the CX9.

You can make it full time touchscreen, it's a setting in the infotainment. Can't really say about the other issues. I will say, having had mazdas before, when you get used to the dial, it actually becomes easier to use when driving.
Agreed, it doesn't know its priorities.
This engine and transmission has literally zero track record in terms of reliability, is that right? That’s a tough sell. Mazda got caught with bad timing on this one, with mandates for electrification coming real soon. I wonder how they can recoup the R&D on this. They should have just paired the I6 with the plugin battery, and created a top trim with that. Maybe they’ll end up doing that so they can continue to sell this engine beyond 2030.
Big SUVs are such a waste of space. Could've been so much smaller externally if it was a minivan, for the same interior space.
I can't understand for the life of me why car manufacturers put a third row in these small SUVs. It just doesn't make sense.

Yeah obviously this replaces the CX7. CX60 is the only one that introduce a new category.
Isn't the x5 a top seller? Ive never heard anyone say thats because its so roomy! Space is not the only reason people buy an SUV. There is a matrix full of reasons, some things cant even be explained.logically. And so far Mazda is selling twice as many 90s than 9s. Give them a couple years and that number will double
The 3rd row legroom sucks...practically puts the feet on the railing of the 'pushed' up 2nd row. Good only for babies honestly..there is literally no carpet space in 3rd row ..that should tell you everything.
