The 2024 Kia Telluride Isn't Quite Top Dog Anymore, But That's OK

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Kia's Telluride sent shockwaves through the industry. Not just because it looked good and was right-sized, right-priced, and timed extremely well, but because people were willing to pay up to $10,000 over sticker just to get their hands on one. For several years the average markup on a Telluride was nearly $5,000. Seriously, $5K. Why? Because the Telluride is big inside, solid looking, easy to live with and came with a ton of features you might not have expected in a "family hauler."
Kia's popular people mover has now been on sale for four years, and what a time it has been. We have a new Pilot, new Pathfinder, the Grandest Highlander ever, and soon new GM SUVs that take "big and boxy" and run with it. You wouldn't be crazy if you suspected Telluride's success had a hand in Grand Highlander, Traverse, and Acadia development and that's good because everyone wins.

I think a lot of the popularity of the front amber DRLs came from the design just as much as the color. The way it was a headlight surround, I think gave it character. This new design is quite a bit more generic.

I agree. I think the headlight should have stayed the same as a trademark part of the design. Like the grill on a jeep, the taillights on the old Cadillacs , the spare tire hump in the trunk of the old Lincolns and the opera windows on the continental

I loved this glowing review of the Telluride. It’s much deserved. I owned many Hyundai/Kias back in the late 00s early 2010s and always liked them. Fast forward to 2020 I was obsessed with the Telluride from launch. I test drove one and I was astonished by what Kia has done. My mom bought a 2024 and I drove it around for a week this past fall and all of my feelings about the Telluride were confirmed. A home run for Kia. I recommend it to everyone. I hope they continue to polish it and change things as the years go on. Your review was one of the most accurate I’ve seen. I find it ironic how some journalists will lambast the product they just gave a glowing review two years prior. None of the competition thrills me like the Telluride. Pilot is the only one that has any of my attention. Another great review. Thanks, Alex!

Toyotas as you said, offer great functionality, fuel economy, and utility. However, if I'm going to spend this kind of money, I want creature comforts, I want myself and my passengers to be as comfortable as possible. If people are buying the top trims on the Telluride, that tells you that people are ok to spend the cash if they get the comfort and features. On the engine front, I think about 4 pot turbo charged relatively small displacement engines putting out over 300 HP, and I wonder about their long term reliability. The V6 engines from Kia/Hyundai might be older designs, but we're driving a 2022 Telluride and the engine/transmission combo is as smooth as butter. You feel like you got your money's worth when you're in that car. A commodity vehicle with a premium feel. As always, you present great, detail rich reviews. Keep 'em coming.

Do you know if the palisade is as quiet as the Kia? Are there any other SUVs, including luxury that are quieter than the telluride? Also do you have any info on how the telluride does in deeper snow? Thanks again.

HERE IS YOUR BELOVED RELIABILITY. 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌 NEW YORK, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) reached a settlement potentially worth $150 million to resolve U.S. class-action litigation tied to recalls of about 3.36 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles whose defective fuel pumps could cause engines to stall. A preliminary settlement was filed on Wednesday night in federal court in Brooklyn. It requires a judge's approval. The settlement covers owners and lessees of dozens of Toyota and Lexus vehicle models manufactured in the 2013 to 2020 model years and equipped with Denso low-pressure fuel pumps. Honda Recalls: Brake and Rearview Camera Defects Honda recently issued recalls for various models due to brake and rearview camera defects. These recalls address potential safety hazards that can result in accidents and injuries. Unexpected Loss of Brake Function: Honda recalled over 124,000 Civic, Passport, and Pilot vehicles, including certain model year 2020-2021 Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot, and 2020 Acura MDX vehicles. The recall was prompted by concerns that the vehicles could experience an unexpected loss of brake function, increasing the risk of a crash. Defective Brake Holds: Another recall impacted nearly 400 model year 2023 Civic, Accord, Acura RDX, and Acura Integra vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured with defective brake holds, leading to potential movement while the brake hold is activated. Honda plans to notify impacted vehicle owners by mail, starting from July 24. Rearview Camera Concerns: Honda recalled over 1.1 million Odyssey, Pilot, and Passport vehicles due to defective rearview cameras that may not display properly. This recall applies to model year 2018-2023 Honda Odyssey, 2019-2022 Honda Pilot, and 2019-2023 Honda Passport vehicles. A non-functional rearview camera can compromise the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Class Action Lawsuits against Honda In addition to the recalls, Honda is facing class action lawsuits that allege serious defects in its vehicles' components. Variable Timing Control Actuator Defect: A class action lawsuit filed against Honda claims that the automaker knowingly sold vehicles with defective variable timing control actuators. The alleged defect, affecting model year 2012-2014 CR-Vs, 2012 Accords, and 2012-2015 Crosstours, can lead to catastrophic engine failure and poses a safety hazard. Defective Electric Power Steering Systems: Two separate class action lawsuits were filed against Honda, asserting that model year 2022-2023 Honda Civic vehicles were manufactured with defective electric power steering systems. These systems may "stick," requiring an increase in steering effort, leading to overcorrections and potential collisions. Electric Braking System Sticking: Another class action lawsuit argues that Honda sold model year 2022-2023 Honda Civic vehicles with electric braking systems that can stick at highway speeds. This alleged defect can cause vehicle owners to overcorrect, increasing the risk of collisions.

I own a 2023 Telluride EX. I traded in a Honda Pilot for it. I've had to take it to the dealer 4x for reliability and quality issues: Left rear door would not open from the inside of the vehicle (linkage not connected at factory). 3 Recalls: Side airbag wiring harness, rear speaker crash pad, and display software change. Very quirky controls. Auto setting for HVAC only seems to auto set the fan speed. The engine auto kill switch always reverts back to always kill the engine when you're stopped whenever power is recycled. (Auto kill will prematurely wear out your starter.) I know the Pilot's display is smaller, but I can live with that. I prefer reliability over extra features.

Mazda CX-90 PHEV owner here. I was really interested in the Telluride, especially because of the lane centering that is among the best in the business at any price. It also has some nice features, is quite roomy However, I tried to order one in order to avoid the mark-up… no dice. The dealer still wanted $4000.000 over MSRP. Also, my wife thought the CX-90 looked more premium and she actually thought it was easier getting into the CX-90’s 3rd row. So, I bought the CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus. It is actually more luxurious looking than the Telluride (especially better that fake looking wood on the Telluride’s dash), gets superior gas mileage and it handles and performs better (even though the 0-60 in my Mazda really isn’t that much better than the Telluride ). Finally, I paid $1500.00 under MSRP when I bought the Mazda. In addition, Mazda recently lowered the prices of non- hybrid models by as much as $4000.00.

you make great review videos as you leave nothing out! I recently purchased a Telluride at the end of December so about 3 weeks ago and I really like it. You nailed what the competition is exactly because I also checked out the Pilot, the Atlas, the Highlander, and the Palisade ---- I might had gone with the Pilot but the salesman literally ghosted me after a month of looking and comparing. The Atlas has great roomy interior, but also the ugliest interior and it's low to the ground and you feel like you're in a car, not a suv. The highlander looked very nice inside and out but felt so small and cramped inside. The palisade was kinda too what's the word for it.... I just felt like there were some weird 70's vibes going on with that velvet cheesy headliner like all it needed was shag carpet and a cigarette lighter and an ashtray . oh btw I was coming off of selling my Yukon XL a couple months previously and since I couldn't afford a new Yukon (my first choice) and the 24 Acadia doesn't seem like it'll ever be in stock---I felt the Telluride was the closest to a Yukon except being mid-sized. The biggest downside on the Telluride is the almost non-existent trunk space behind the 3rd row compared to my XL Yukon. But the handling and comfort and ride is the closest to the Yukon I've found and Id also say the Telluride is the best handling suv I've ever owned. my Yukon would fishtail when I accelerated in rainy conditions no matter how smooth I thought I was pressing down on the gas pedal-- this AWD really grips the road in all conditions and there is no sliding around whatsoever. the comfort is on par with the Yukon also and as far al exterior colors go, there's none better than what Kia offers on the Telluride. I'm a Black, white, or grey paint color kind of guy so that's fantastic----but also those dark, almost black browns and greens the Telluride comes in are very nice too. The wold grey is the ultimate car color imo. all told I'd give my Telluride a 9/10 stars with that one missing star for how small it is. they need an XL option

We just put our money on the line and chose the 2024 Kia Telluride SX X-Pro. The Grand Highlander and VW Atlas were contenders but the Grand Highlander felt much cheaper in quality on the inside compared to the Telluride (no rubber anti-slip in the wireless charging pad, I felt like I might break the level to move the 2nd row forward for 3rd row access, etc) and the overall design of the Telluride inside and out looked better. The Atlas won points for the car seat friendly tilt but lost us with the touch capacitive buttons but otherwise was a great choice. The third seat in the third row of any midsize 3 row SUV is laughably small, so I was fine with the Atlas giving two very usable 3rd row seats. Had we been able to wait a little longer, the 2024 Chevy Traverse may have won out with its car seat friendly tilt, design on par with the Telluride, and overall spaciousness. Alas, we're super happy with our Telluride. One last note - I loved the fuel efficiency of the Grand Highlander but I really wanted brown interior, an option only available on the GH Hybrid Max. The power of the Hybrid Max was excellent, but I just couldn't rationalize the extra expense. With our driving it would take us roughly 5 years of gas bills to pay for the price difference between the Telluride trim we wanted and the Grand Highlander trim we wanted. I am SUPER surprised Kia doesn't have a hybrid for the Telluride yet. It seems like a no brainer.

And given the MPGs, I still think its one of the better powertrains in the segment. @Alex/@Auto Buyers Guide - have you driven the final production Hybrid Max + 6-speed? Do you still have the minor qualms with the 6A? This is pretty much the only publication that I've seen critique that powertrain in this way, and ya'll are more nuanced in reviews, so genuinely curious here.

Re the grand highlander, we tried it. But two things. First, I just found the seats or the seat well too narrow and uncomfortable. Second, quite simply, the grand highlander was almost 20% more expensive for comparable trims. Both the Pilot and the Telluride were around $44 k for mid-level trim. But the Grand Highlander was over $50 k. The regular highlander is more comparable in terms of price but I wouldn't buy the regular highlander due to poor 3rd row.

Alex, why don't you have Pilot in most of your comparisons ? I bought the 2024 Pilot. Two issues with the Telluride. First, you are forced to get Captains Chairs in all but the lowest trim levels. This makes it a 7 seater which is tough with 3 kids. (Who is forced to sit in the 3rd row ?). Second, the Telluride supposedly has the better Infotainment with 12 in screen and built in Navigation. However, it needs a wire. Pilot only has 9 in screen but wireless Android Auto and Apple Play which is more convenient.

Then you do what we've been doing all our lives and hit the gas to move forward and the car launches in reverse. The problem with all these 4 cylinders replacing the 6 cylinders is that while they get 33% better fuel economy you also pay for premium instead of regular and that cost about 25% more negating most of the better fuel economy of the 6. The 6 has far better low end torque and it feels just right in the Palisade/Telluride.
