OPINION - Mazda CX-60 and CX-90 Problems, TSBs and Recall review. All major issues/fixes explained!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With the CX-60 and CX-90 Mazda has aimed to take on premium SUV manufacturers like Audi and BMW. But how reliable are they? In this episode we look at issues identified by motoring journalists during their road tests and document the Technical Service Bulletins and Recalls conducted so far by Mazda for each vehicle.
At Car-X-Tras we publish new videos (at least) twice weekly being a mixture of car accessory reviews, along with new / used car road tests. So please subscribe to our new channel for EV, Hybrid, PHEV and petrol car reviews and more!

I found a CX-90 with 5k miles. The car fax showed an oil change and a software update performed at the dealer I bought the car from. The previous owner didn’t like the seats lol. I got it for 35k because of the finance deals on new cars from Mazda and everyone assumed there must be something wrong with it, but never bothered asking why it was traded in so quickly. It’s a preferred plus. Blue Crystal Mica with tow package. I love the car and have had zero problems.

I own a CX90 turbo s premium plus with 5 k miles. Ironically, I’m taking it in for service tomorrow for oil and recall programming. I love the vehicle. You did indeed get a great deal. If I had to guess, I think that the clunky off the line acceleration might be why your previous owner let it go but who knows? It’s a 1st production year- there are going to be issues. I have a B2B 125k warranty so I’m staying with it. Still worth the $ for a great vehicle

Had my CX 60 PHEV since mid-August last year. It DID conk out on me once, fault in the hybrid cooling system apparently. Needed a new fan. I was surprised that my dealer (big, but not huge) had one in stock, and I was on my way 24 hours later. Changing the standard dampers/shock absorbers to the bespoke Koni adaptive dampers has transformed the ride. Very happy so far.

That was a very good video, very accurate and something a lot of dealers should watch that are ignorant...fortunately i have an excellent dealer! I've had my CX60 Homura since March 2023, didn't even sit in one before ordering it! Yes, it's had software updates galore, replaced front bushings, and its going in next week to have the sticky steering rectified. Pending is the 12v battery warning, the driver personalization system has been problematic since the last service and the revised boot lock is pending. The rear doors are tinny, but i don't open them enough to warrant the door card being pulled off and it being a lease vehicle. The question on whether i would get another one...absolutely, in a heart beat, no questions asked. It's performance is jaw dropping, the interior a pleasant place to be and its on road presence is very satisfying. I smile every time I get in it.

Thank you Darren! I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment! We're fans of both Honda and Mazda. The new CR-V PHEV is actually a very comfortable well-developed vehicle. However its performance vs the Mazda is not comparable. The Mazda CX-60 PHEV is a beast! And it also has more personality and a great interior. There's no doubt Mazda will get this vehicle right at some point (i.e. mid-life refresh or a 2nd gen) just like they have with the CX-5. In the meantime I hope they get your steering sorted and it goes on to give you years of happy motoring :-)

I got my cx60 2024 model (3.3L e-skyactiv G version) last week here in Dubai UAE. So far I’m extremely happy with the car. The transmission is so smooth, absolutely nothing abnormal noted so far. The car is very comfortable and the engine noise is just amazing! Face recognition and safety e features (lane assistance and dynamic cruze control) are some of the high technology features in this car in my view. I’m wondering the issues listed here doesn’t apply to my model (ps: mine is the mild hybrid version).

6,700 miles on my 90 Turbo S Premium Plus model. I get compliments on it everywhere I go. But unfortunately, it’s the best looking problem vehicle out there. It’s in the shop, AGAIN. This time they can identify the grinding noise coming from a smooth acceleration- either transmission or engine- but can’t seem to find the exact source of the problem - almost three weeks later and still no fix. Other problems I’ve had- driver side mirror wobbles at high speed, lift gate does not open all the way, back seat leather getting warped, both front doors rattling. Some of these were fixed, some have yet to be. The problem is: there’s no suitable replacement out there as far as other vehicle options- if you’re considering safety- the Lexus TX, Toyota Grand Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, Infinity QX60- all fall miserably short in their crash tests. MB, Volvo CX 90, Audi Q7, Lincoln Aviator, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevy Traverse, don’t have the reliability that Mazda is supposed to have. Hyundai Palisade and Telluride are everywhere so if you want to have the same car everyone else does then those are good choices and the Acura MDX does not offer vents in the third row seating. Except maybe mediocre foot vents that will do nothing for you in the dead of summer when you’re back there sweating. To top it off, Mazda thanked the first buyers of the CX90 by dropping the price by over $4,000! If you purchased yours in 2023 or early 2024, it is now $4,000 cheaper for the same CX90!?! Which will translate into more money lost when it comes to the resale value of it. Mazda customer care has offered (one car payment, or any accessory, or a $500 gift card) to make it right) I like to think I’m good at math but all of these combined don’t even add up to half the money lost over night from the manufacturer. From an aesthetic standpoint, Mazda got it right. From a reliability standpoint, they missed the mark on this one but will probably get it right, from taking care of their loyal customers who were the first to buy the 90, they’ve lost a lot of people who were loyal to the brand.

Excellent video. I have been aware of the issues trough Mazda forums. I also complained about the suspension and roadnoise, new dumpers and insulation on the doors were installed ASAP. I got as well two letters from Mazda to perform various updates which were done. I particularly did not experienced most of the issues described but know people who did,. Personally I am very happy with the car and do not regret my purchase. For some reason I believe the sale of the car was rushed however it is a very good car and Mazda has been relatively transparent and quick to react in my opinion. Unfortunately some unhappy customers were lost on the way.

Very informative. As a Mazda CX60 in-line six petrol owner in Australia it’s very disappointing. I feel people signing to buy these off the plan were used as Beta testers. Also I was never offered a test drive. I was told I didn’t have to accept it if I didn’t like it but when it arrived I was not offered any choice but to take it.I have had the safety recall for steering and software update that has remarkably improved the transmission. Still awaiting the rear suspension replacement but it’s been a few months now. I feel there should be a safety recall on the active cruise control. It’s potentially lethal. When passing a vehicle in the right hand land (we drive on the LHS here) on a highway at 110 km/hr (that’s metric folks) if using the cruise control the car will often falsely sense there is a vehicle in front of the car when it is on the left and start to immediately slow the car down. If there’s a vehicle behind you and you don’t act to resume speed fast you can be at risk of collision. Please Mazda fix.

I purchased My C X 60 top spec TAKUMI PHEV in march 23 ' in the UK. Now covered 8 k miles . I am very happy with it, yes it's had some software updates and the sticky steering was sorted with some new parts and is now perfect. I do find the lane keeping assist annoying if I forget to switch it off, however a lot of my driving is on country roads so this doesn't come in anyway. C X 60 handles well ,comfortable, and fast if required, economical for a big heavy car. When I First drove it the ride seemed a bit hard, the tyre pressures were to high, for my use. They were set max load carrying. Also the suspension " free's up " after a few thousand miles , like most new cars I've had.

I would say that fixes are being rolled out for CX-90 owners and that, gradually, the situation is getting better. I suspect that's why the CX-70 launch was delayed until now. Newer vehicles are being updated with revised parts from the factory and some reprogramming patches have also been deployed. So not perfect - but slowly improving. Of course, some owners have not experienced any issues, while others have had countless faults...

I traded my Mazda cx-9 signature car that I loved in on a cx-90 last fall that I thought was going to be as safe and dependable as my 2018 cx-9 had been but boy was I wrong. The worse problem was the steering. Was hard to drive on the highway and stay in my lane. The stiffness and notchiness got worse over time. Also 1 problem I don’t think you talked about in the video is the cruise control believing something is coming in your lane on the right and slamming on brakes. Happens in curves and when big truck passes to the left. My cx-90 had been at the dealership since January 8th. I have a cx-9 loaner that drives wonderful.

Very interesting video. I've got the CX-90 PHEV in Canada and thus far haven't experienced any of the issues noted in your video. Mind you it's only got 5500 km on it. I installed a level 2 charger so almost all of my driving has been electric. I did pull my 2600 lb trailer on a very short trip (4 hours, back home from some service) and the engine/car did a great job as a tow vehicle, just as good as my old BMW X5 Diesel did. It also does well in the snow although I wish the ground clearance was higher for deep snow.

Picked up a new cx60 in Dec '23. Transmission lag on take-off from zero, jump and jerk at low speed has been my experience. The more positive you are with the transmission, the less the issue, Inner city is not great but on the highway and through twisting rural/country roads, it is first class. Inside front door panel came free at 1000km because the panel clips had been mis-installed. Pretty poor from the factory. Most annoying issue is the airconditioner. The termostat surges the temperature up and down and refuses to stay at a consistent temperature unless you turn the i-stop off. With i-stop disengaged, the air-conditioner works fine. Honestly WTF! With that said, beautiful interior, comfortable, quiet and relaxing to drive on any trip outside of the inner city. Fuel economy from the 3.3 petrol turbo has been excellent, at least as good if not better as my previous 2.5 normally asperated 4 pot but with a tonne more power and torque on hand for over-taking etc. If the re-turned transmission fixes that issue, and they work out how to run an air conditioner, it will be a brilliant vehicle. So far 7/10.

I have a Mazda CX-60, but hopefully not anymore from next week, never again! I ordered and received my Homura with all options new in May 2023. From the first two weeks, my frequent visits to the dealer began with various problems that are not being resolved. Apart from the issues mentioned in the video, I also have the following problems (verified by my dealer through test drives): - When accelerating quickly in EV mode, I hear a loud scraping sound. - From the fourth gear, you hear a whooping sound. - When my car is stationary and the engine is idling, you hear a clear rattling noise outside. Once you put the car in gear, it disappears. - While driving uphill in reverse in EV, the entire car starts shaking. - The driveshaft causes clattering sounds from 50 km/h, sounding as if a window is open. - My driveshaft has been replaced with a newer version. Now I have the sounds, but also a vibration from 50 km/h. No solution for now. - Experienced engine failure, the car suddenly stalled in the middle of the road. No issues found at the dealer. - Apple CarPlay often doesn't connect, or the connection suddenly drops while driving. - My car makes very strange noises while parked; our neighbors contacted us to check the car. - The tow bar no longer functions. kzread.info/dash/bejne/an6L1auulJXUYNY.htmlfeature=shared

I never buy a new design of any automobile. I learned my lesson in 2003 when I bought a new Honda Accord EXL V6 coupe. It practically lived at the dealer for numerous problems from trim that curled up in the sun to the most disconcerting failure was the factory welds in the floor pan failed and the car made loud popping noises in turns and on start off. The dealer had to weld the floor pan back together, after that I traded it in for a Ford Expedition 4wd. I suspect these Mazda's will be fine cars after 2-3 years on the market. I currently own a CX5 Signature and I love it!!

The car has some amazing points and things I love mostly around the engine and interior but I have to say the overall package is just not on the money ( and it is a lot in Australia) I have experienced nearly all of the things listed in in this video, poor transition between mild hybrid and engine , really harsh ride, system failures like driver recognition, car play failures, the lack of antenna on the car means there is virtually no digital radio signal for me and i had a really bad rattle in the roof linear which was fixed but seems to be coming back again. I sent my dealer an email with a list of everything wrong and was essentially fobbed off with “ get used to it” I would feel better if i knew updates would fix some of these issues but there has been no communication from the dealer or Mazda. I am curious to see the introduction of the CX-70 tomorrow...hopefully a lot of these issues will have been resolved before they start showing up on the car lots. Of all the issues, the transmission ones (and the dumb shifter arrangement that they likely won't change) scares me the most because I am not so sure that software alone can fix it. Going without a torque converter with an electric motor sandwiched in the middle seems to leave a bit to be desired performance wise.

Just wanted to post this in case it happens to someone else in a similar situation. 2018 cx5 (out of powertrain) engine cracked confirmed at 53130 miles so should happened before that. I reached out to Mazda USA after bringing the car to the dealer ($195 for inspection mainly to have some documentation to Mazda USA an issue that I already knew after my homework and inspection). I told them my love for the car (which is true I do like Mazda design and plan to upgrade when cx5 has hydrid version) and how well I took care the car with pictures under the hood almost like new. Guess what, they offered $150 after 3 weeks of emailing (almost begging for help) with documentation diagnostics and video from the dealership and pictures of the car.. What a waste of time. A cylinder head should never crack at this low mileage, did I mentioned that I always change synthetic oil every 5K miles. I guess this is a known issue but not enough for some law firm to step in and do a lawsuit. A mechanic from reddit forum even pointed out it was a simple machining flaw that caused the issue and I quote "The lifter bore on cylinder 3’s exhaust was drilled too deep and caused the heads to crack."

Spending AU$80k on a Mazda i thought i would be getting a luxury vehicle without these issues. Gonna buy an MG in the future, much smoother transmission ride and much much cheaper.

@@sgnfo Hi. When it comes to suspension, the Volvo is definitely better, but it seems that Mazda is already working on improving that aspect. The mazda's engine is on another level. They have no comparison in power, torque or fuel consumption. It's a blast. The equipment has nothing to do with it either. The Mazda is equipped with everything and in the Volvo, you have to pay for it and the cameras for example are much better. In the Volvo the sound of the doors is better. They sound more robust. The finish is even a bit better in the Mazda, but both are outstanding. And now to the important thing, in the Volvo I have 200,000km and I have had to repair the steering, the central differential, the clutch, the EGR valve, the Xenon headlights and a multitude of hoses, one of them, the intercooler twice, which has caused it to go into safety mode and I have had to go home 30km/h. Also, the Volvo service is no better than Mazda. I've only had this one for 25000 km but so far, I've been delighted with the brand's response, service and cost. We will see how the car responds over the years, but I don't think it will be worse than with the Volvo which, by the way, is now in the workshop. Could it be that I have clarified your doubts?

My wife’s CX-90 PHEV is making a rubbing sound when shifting from gear 1-2. This is only audible in EV mode. Aside from that problem, we have 2 major complaints: 1. Throttle is not calibrated well. It takes way too much pedal effort to accelerate. The car isn’t slow by any means, but it feels dead slow unless you floor it. Simply bad calibration on Mazdas part. 2. The engine note is TERRIBLE on the PHEV. Again, when flooring it it’s fine and kind of sounds like it’s supercharged. But 99% of the time, it sounds like a cheap 4-banger! Why Mazda??? Hide the sound if it’s not a good one. Most people are not driving these things at 10/10 throttle. Aside from those two things and the transmission issue, it really is an awesome car. I have a 24 BMW X5 and I can honestly say the Mazda feels sharper than the BMW. The BMW feels better built though.

Mazda CX60 Owner, for six months, A bigger issue, however, is the transmission. The eight-speed transmition it’s unpleasantly clunky and jerky at low speed. The shift logic feels at odds with the torquey, rather than surfing the torque in stop-start traffic and holding the same gear as you blend in the throttle, the auto is overly keen to kick down, which makes the CX-60 feel cumbersome rather than effortless. It’s a ’box that rarely feels like it’s in the right gear at the right time, meaning it’s easy to ‘catch it by surprise’ and then be forced to wait as it shifts down a cog.

I have had a cx-60 for about a year now and have had some horrifying faults - no power whatsoever when pulling out in traffic, the drivers seat returning to rest while being driven, taking you away from the pedals, gear change shock just to name some. It's currently in having the steering done. We have had ghosting, where the car sees things that aren't there and throws up warning messages, the car slowing down as you go to overtake and many more issues. Mazda's refusal to accept these issues exist is the biggest issue by far as you do not feel you are being taken seriously and the car is dangerous. If you have the money buy the CX5 or go non-mazda in my books. Mazda should be considering compensation as this car was not ready for launch.

The chassis creaks and groans, also a design flaw. They can't fix it; they keep greasing it to temporarily solve it. Rear shock absorbers bounce excessively over bumps. Steering issues cause the car to drift, requiring constant correction, especially dangerous at higher speeds, leading to swaying. The driveshaft is a design flaw, producing clattering sounds and vibrations between 50km/h and 100km/h. Apple CarPlay connection often fails, drops during the journey, and doesn't return. Sensors are overly sensitive; some brake the car without apparent cause. We bought the car new for 70k euros (NL) and sold it after 6 months with a 40% loss. Many are aware of these issues, making trades challenging, as many dealers don't want these cars. I would advise waiting at least two years; personally, I will never consider another Mazda!
