The Man Who Vanished at Sea for 14 Months
Ойын-сауық
In November 2012, Salvador Alvarenga, a brave fisherman, embarked on a fishing journey off the Mexican coast. Barely two days into his voyage, a brutal storm struck, prompting his desperate SOS call for rescue. It was the last anyone heard from him for 438 days. Journey with us as we explore his incredible survival story.

i dont think any of us can ever truly cpmprehend the magnitude of this story of survival. thr sheer mental strength this man must posess is astounding. i wish him a long and happy life. he truly deserves it
To survive at sea for that long is incomprehensible. The human spirit and will are incredibly powerful at times.
One of the greatest stories of survival at sea
This is the most incredible story of survival ever. This man endured what could be considered the greatest ever testament to man's will to survive in the worst conditions imaginable. God was watching over this man no doubt. Excellent video. Pray this man has a happy and gratifying life.

What is the name of the book? I would love to read it myself.
I remember this case. I seem to recall that in the wake of his rescue, there were some allegations that his story was unbelievable, that it really wasn't as long as he alleged, and that he actually had more supplies to ensure his survival instead of the dearth of supplies he claimed was the case. I don't know what ever happened to these allegations or how the story ended. As for myself, I am a believer in his miraculous tale of survival.

I've owned my 14ft solo skiff for 3 years now. Two of my best friends own there own solo skiffs. Three times a year we do a 3 to 4 night, fun fishing and camp trips on different islands. All three of our boats are setup similar. We all carry air horns, flare guns, VHF radios, A emergency dry bag with a tarp for shelter, spare water, dry foods, dry clothes, all we need to start fires, survival gear, we each carry a legal firearm for protection. We all run a rear gas motor and bow electric motor, with charging ports on the hull for charging cell phones, Drones, and anything electronic. I go out usually 3 days a week, and I enjoy it. At the same time weather I go out for 6 hrs or do a 3 day trip, all of the most important survival gear is stored inside my vessel. All these stories are sad, but I keep seeing people not prepared. Never cheap out on your communication to the outside world, especially in the ocean. Always prepare for something to go wrong. These are our hobbies, but they're adventure's. purchase everything you need for your hobby. boating, hiking, mtn climbing. God bless us all who have our planned adventures.

@@TheScotian82You got a point there but I reckon an emergency solar radio / torch that flashes an SOS if need be, is an absolute must. Even a cheap windup radio torch would have been handy. At night an SOS light could probably be seen from space. These things are not prohibitively expensive.

From the west coast of Mexico to the Solomon islands....wow.

Ive never seen a man change so much in appearance .He went from looking Nigerian when he first set sail, then months later to a thin white man ,then when rescued he appeared over an weight hispanic ,to then a year later arabic..The sea will do that to you

I read this story about five years ago. I grew up on the water and was a commercial fishermen for many years. The oceans are very dangerous. But this guy and his helper went out fishing when a front was coming through and it made fishing excellent but the sad thing is 1400 lbs of fish was only going to pay him $250 …but one thing you never do is change the name of a boat.. it’s very bad luck and when he purchased his boat after he had it ready he changed the name of the vessel the day before he went out.. call me superstitious but if you ask any real fisherman they would probably tell you the same
"Despite warnings of incoming storm" why is it that these accidents always start like this?!
This story has a good book to read too. 438 Days, as I recall.

Written by Jonathon Franklin. I have a copy on my bookshelf.
I love this channel, great job.
So he knew a storm was coming and decided to go out anyways. In a small boat no less. This really sounds like he did this to himself and if he had played it safe he would of been fine. Always pay attention to storm paths on radar and any storm warnings in the area for that day. Unless you're in a massive commercial fishing vessel that can handle it and even then i would be nervous of any storms. Hell of a story we got out of it though so thanks to him in a way.

You seem to forget that you are dealing with another culture, an unsophisticated culture void of most of the conveniences and resources that you and I take for granted in everyday life. These poorer fishermen don't have a lot, so the drive to continue fishing in the face of approaching storms isn't as big a deal to them as it is for us. We're dealing with a completely different mindset hers with a different outlook on life and a propensity to live "outside of the box". Be thankful for you have. Many, many others aren't as lucky as you are.
vaavvv what a survival..unbeliavable..congrats for his great great effort...
Truly amazing
14 months at sea is pretty incredible. It makes me dubious as to how he was able to survive for most of it on his own and with limited food. Has anyone questioned whether or not his story of Cordova is the truth? He could have eaten him for sustenance.
This is great content please share more
Great book !
Excellent channel. Keep up with the good work. New subscriber.
Amazing
I wish i could know him some day. A great hero of endurance
You die of thirst not lack of food. It takes about three days before you die of dehydration. You can last without food for about 60-90 days depending on how must reserves your body has ?
Unbelievable. I'm glad he made it back to his family in El Salvador.
Quite an adventure! Those "pongas" are great boats.
“ with the engine attached to the stern” where the fuck else would you put it?
The stern is a good place to put the engine I tried putting my boat engine on the side it didn't work out well
Amazing how he survived
So that's Mr. Salvador who's from El Salvador who's mother is also from Salvador? Got it!
God is amazing ❤
How did he look so well at the end? He doesn’t appear to have lost any weight at all.
The motor was attached to the stern. What a weird fact to include

Isn't it "the law of the sea" , that any help or rescue of any vessel needing it , shall be applied ??? That Container ship really dropped the ball . I guess Tom Hanks just got really lucky that it wasn't the same one , huh ?

Wow really hard challenge
Wondering how much weight he lost
Why the white noise in my screen?
the speckles onscreen to mimic old film reel is not realistic and very annoying.
Not only does he have the longest survival at sea....but he's probably the only person ever to have ingested snake venom from eating seabirds...DAMM!
4 days no water you're dead days turned into weeks weeks turned into months months turned into years 84 years later they weighed 6 lb and worth 14 inches tall when they finally landed on Gulliver's Island or was it Gilligan's
I might starve unless someone was there to guide me. I couldn't do it alone.
Why didn’t he just activate his gyro stabilizers?
im surprised he didnt use his friend to chum the waters, it would be easy fishing .
Did the orange store ever open back up ? Coulda used the phone there

When adrift it is practically impossible to discover a floating coconut before passing/landing an island. Wind and current take you to the island. The coconut (from the island) would have been floating adrift away from it.
“Unburdened by family commitments “ says the narrator. How about an El Salvador gang was trying to kill him and to keep his daughter safe he fled the country. I doubt I’ll go any further than that in this video. In fact I think I’ll block your videos.

I always wondered who plots our destiny, events like these don't just happen they are charted, two professional fishermen caught in a storm end up lost at sea for over one year, one makes it one does not. What makes ill sense is that I have been out in high seas on different ocean liners and it doesn't take long before all signs of life disappear, once you notice the water changing its color is when any birds that might have been hitching a ride split and you are now on your own, there is no sign of life only an immense void which I used to describe as the third dimension you are the only ones out there and realize the enormity of this Planet, sea turtles and other life that are amphibious don't stray far from shore as do birds, 300 miles out there is bullshit, the only life we used to notice was when the boat dumped its garbage including food that came out a huge rear flap then the fish would show up for their free meal and then gone. What is worse than hunger is thirst, it is unbearable and being in a very salty sea there is always a fine mist that covers you including the lips which start feeling dry and you lick constantly, salt makes you very thirsty where did they get water, the baloney about blood doesn't work there is no life out there, they cut the net loose so every time they were hungry just grab whatever like the market??? These guys made up this story to give themselves an excuse, they were fooling around with some other chickens and needed a good excuse so they would be accepted by their wives after missing for over one year..
Were these guys having a killer time?
I hope this man is a millionaire and can do whatever he wants every day of his life now ( if not then I hate the human race) . Unbelievable story n so scary n sad . 😢
