Lazy Athlete part of me wonders if he ever stopped loving Lucy. Yeah he turned on her really fast, but that was bc he wanted to protect himself and secure a better life, which is something that had been engrained into him from a young age. He probably never learned how to properly deal with his emotions, which is why feeling vulnerable and weak scared him so much. He turned his love into hate purely for self preservation.

    @lasttoparty7570

I think Snow was not so much upset about Katniss potentially killing him than he was upset that he'd been outmaneuvered and outplayed by Coin. What he tells Katniss in the greenhouse is "My failure was being so slow to grasp Coin's plan. (...) I fear we have both been played for fools." Snow is such an egotistical man that he hates losing to this challenger and in the moment after Coin dies, he's happy because he feels he's won a victory over her, if only by outliving her. As he drowned in his own blood, he probably thought to himself "Snow lands on top" because he'd won, he'd gotten revenge on Coin, just like when he poisoned Dean Highbottom, he hoped the man would reflect on how foolish he'd been to oppose Snow and more fooliish still to be so easily manipulated. Snow was a winner and he would always come out on top.

Also the fact that Katniss sung ‘deep in the meadow’ to Rue in the arena as she died and that the last time he probably heard that song was when Lucy Grey sung it to Maude Ivory to send her to sleep by the lake made Snow hate Katniss and remind him of Lucy Grey even more.

@@TheNerdyOrganist After reading the Ballad I came to conclusion that when Lucy Gray sang the part of the "The Hanging Tree": "Are you are you coming to the hanging tree" Was a crypted phrase for Coriolanus trying to tell him the place where Coriolanus should go to meet her when they are about to flee. And Coriolanus understood that. He was present at the hanging of the protagonist of this song. Also the woman who Sejanus tried to get out from prison was the woman that the victim call to flee before his hanging.

The Kendom nope. You’re wrong mate. Katniss is actually Maude Ivory’s granddaughter. Because if Lucy Gray ran away, she wouldn’t risk coming back just in case Snow was still there. And remember the only way Katniss could know ‘The Hanging Tree’ was because as stated in the book, Maude Ivory could memorise a song after only one hearing. And if ‘The Hanging Tree’ was only sung once then who else but Maude Ivory could remember it? Maude Ivory would NEVER let Lucy Gray be forgotten so she passed down the songs secretly.

For me one of the most shocking things about Snow is not about Snow himself, but the realization of what was about to become of Tigris. His sweet cousin, who was soo caring and supportive of him. She loved him so much, helped him in any way she could. To think this sweet girl was to become completely addicted to plastic surgery, which will lead to her turning into a grotesque cat-looking creature. To think she will become the stylist in the hunger games and THEN fired from this job (most likely by Snow himself, let's be honest) just to end up in a cheap fur store, away from people's sight, forgotten and probably broke. When she meets Katniss, she says ''I'm going to kill him'', Tigris looks really pleased with this thought. It's portrayed beautifully in the movie, the look on her face says everything. He must have been so cruel to her, probably gaslighting, lying to, manipulating just to abandon her completely in the end.

I've actually always had a different theory on what happened there. I always figured seeing what he had become Tigris distanced herself as much as possible from Snow. I'm not even sure whether the plastic surgery would have happened before she was a stylist or after. Perhaps she became so disgusted with not only Snow but her own part in the games that she spiraled. She mutilated herself to distance herself from who she used to be, maybe even feeling a sense of responsibility for who Snow becomes. To disguise her own association with him. And she tucked herself away in a shop of no significance to cut all ties with him I would love to get a story about Tigris to get some answers

The book was just fascinating, I didn't think it would be possible to sympathise with Snow but for the majority of the book I was on his side and rooting for him to receive a positive outcome. It wasn't until he abandoned Lucy Grey that I remembered what an awful person he would become. In that single chapter he turned from the boy at the start of the book to a total monster. The most shocking part was definitely him choosing to accept the support of the Plinth's despite being responsible for the death of their son without showing any guilt or remorse! I hope Suzanne Collins continues with these prequels as it would be interesting to see the new dynamic between Tigress and Coriolanus as well as further progressions in The Hunger Games themselves

Total chills on just how quickly Snow turned on Lucy to murder her. And how Snow knew about Katniss's lake- which explains how he knew about Gale kissing her. he probably had the woods watched, or cameras installed. When he lost his last few mementos after being in the lake, i knew he had totally lost all that made him human. Excellent book- i was afraid Susanne would make excuses for him to explain his evil. I really don't get this line from Snow. Snow at the end of TBOSAS is delusional, he's not at all self-aware. He really wouldn't admit to himself that he is not a good person, and that power is more important than people to him. So it's one hell of a line, but I just don't see how that fits into his character tbh.....

I found it shocking how quickly Snow turned on Lucy Gray, how he didnt even hesitate to kill her after he found out she knew what he was up to. Snows only loves things he knows wont effect him in a negative way, as soon as things start to go south, he instantly protects himself first. Thats why I think he could never get into a real relationship with Lucy Gray, as he thought of her as a something not as a someone. She was something he could own, she was his girl. Idk its all very interesting.

Did anyone else realize that the phrase, “it’s the things we love most... that destroys us.” that Snow tells Katniss in Mockingjay has a deeper meaning now because of the new novel? Snow being heartbroken (or destroyed) by Lucy Gray when she released the snake and he gets bit by it (aka the thing he “loved” most) was a major milestone for his decision later on in the timeline when he captures Peeta, brainwashes him, and lets him free with the rebels, just like the snake being set free from Lucy Gray, so he could then destroy Katniss in D13. (Aka her being destroyed by the thing she loved most too). All so Katniss could finally feel and understand the same way Snow felt when Lucy Gray did that to him.

I have watched sooo many videos about TBOSBAS and hardly anyone has picked up on the bit on page 516 (the epilogue) where Snow says: 'She could fly around District 12 all she wanted, but she and her mockingjays could never hurt him again.' By 'she' he is referring to Lucy Gray, but the ironic thing is, and the thing that made me throw the book to the floor and walk around the room arms raised, silently sobbing is the fact that in the end it was the mockingjay that brought about his fall from power, the fall of the Capitol and the fall of the Hunger Games. I agree that Katniss was a descendant of Maud Ivory or CC and that's why she knew the song and about the lake house. In the end the Covey's mockingjay, the creature Snow would always link to his lover, the creature we will always link to his downwards slope towards pure evil, the thing he was certain he was safe from was the voice of the rebellion. i wondered if anyone else noticed this, because I thought it tied everything up at the end. Is it just me? Also I absoloutely LOVE your videos. Could you do the life of Ollivander, Primrose Everdeen and Lucy Gray Baird. I would love that so much. You have been my quarantine lifeline!

The significance of it being that Snow could have done something about it long ago, and Katniss' life could have been so different to the point she might not have survived the 74th or 75th hunger games due to the fact a lot of those skills she had that helped her survived came from learning how to hunt and fish outside the fence.

I found this really cool theory that says that Maude Ivory ( Lucy’s cousin ) is Katniss’ grandmother. Why? Lucy Gray said that Maude can remember a song very quickly. Lucy Gray sung the hanging tree. As soon as Lucy Gray disappeared music was outlawed in 12. The only other person who could remember that song was Maude. Katniss was taught the song by her dad. So Maude taught it to Katniss’ dad. So this means that Lucy Gray was an ancestor of Katniss

Many people in the comments seem to think that lucy gray actually tried to kill Snow but she didn't. The whole snake thing was trying to show not only how delusional snow was but how he'd tell himself anything in order to justify his actions. She did not plant the snake which snow later realizes when the doctor tells him that the snake that bit him wasn't poisonous and again tells himself that it's better this way anyway. Lucy gray being the expert she was on snakes would've known which was poisonous as suzanne collins makes very clear when lucy grey talks about her knowledge of snakes early on in the book. She wouldn't plant a snake in the first place because the likelihood of it actually biting him would be very unlikely and she definitely wouldn't plant a non poison one to kill him as she's not stupid. The snake being there was an accident. She also definitely wouldn't be loudly singing if she knew that he was out with a gun trying to kill her and if she didn't know that then why would she plant a snake venomous or not? Sorry for the long rant

She did, the snake wasn't meant to kill Snow, it was a ploy as a warning to give Lucy time to run, hence it's a parallel to her time in the Hunger Games and how she won it, it was a message showing that she didn't need snow anymore to help her and that she had grown by herself, the snake was placed and covered up, Snow at that point already wanted to kill her. Lucy and Snow are just as bad as eachother which differentiates from Katniss although the themes are the same while Katniss did some bad actions to eventually lead to others freedom, Lucy did bad actions to lead to her own freedom, they were both manipulated by the Dr thought, but both were as bad as eachother, Lucy at multiple points manipulated Snow for her own end despite their connection. If she wanted to kill Snow it would've been poisonous but she didn't.@@kaitlyn3066

Theory: Clerk Carmine is the(Great) Grandfather of Katniss. A lot of people agree, that some Covey member has to be an ancestor of Katniss. The hints for that are pretty clear. They are all musicians and Katniss's father sang with her and passed a very nice songing voice to her in his genes. They also know about the lake house outside the fence of 12. A hiding spot for Katniss, which her father showed her. A lot of people suggest that Maude Ivory or even Lucy Gray is the grandmother of Katniss, but my theory is, that Clerk Carmine is her (great) grandfather. In the scene when the Covey, Coriolanus and Sejanus visit the lake house, CC took some herbs and showed them to Lucy Gray. Her reakrion was "Oh, you found katniss." In my opinion this could be foreshadowing for someone called Katniss could one day be in his family tree. You could also argue, that Billy Taupe, CC's brother was a rebel. CC could be more rebellios as well. That could be something passed down to his son, Katniss's father who also showed some signs of rebellion when he went to the other side of the fence to go hunting, which was forbidden, as well as singing the hanging tree, a song that is not allowed to be sung. Even if it's not Clerk Carmine, some Covey member must be an ancestor of Katniss. No one else could have known the Hanging Tree song, besides the Peacekeepers.

I never expected to enjoy this book as much as I had thought. In the beginning, I was even considering not finishing it. But I'm so glad I didn't. The thing that I think I loved most about it was how Suzanne Collins created Snow's charecter. In the beginning, I was able to sympothize with him, as I did with Katniss. Growing up poor, the loss of his family, etc. I had no idea what to expect because I expected him to be evil his whole life, which was not the case. Early in the story, he was just a driven young man hoping to redeem his family's name. But Gaul was able to twist him into the monster that he really is. And his love for Lucy Gray gave me even more hope that he would change. But no. His need for power overcame the love he felt for her, and even tried to kill her to claim that power. THAT is what made me hate him even more. And it shaped him into the snake that he turned out to be.

I think it's pretty cool that "Baird" has a similiar pronunciation to "Bird"... And both of them, Katniss and Lucy Gray, are "songbirds" - And it's awesome, cause Snow's demise was precisely "a girl from District 12", and not once, but twice in his life

  • @rachellestang3519

I wonder if his hatred for district 13 also stems from the fact his family lost all their wealth from its destruction. To find out it still exists would be a tough pill to swallow.

The thing I’ve noticed about the Prequel is that President Snow has a weird obsession with Lucy Gray and Katniss he apparently thought he had complete control over Katniss and that ultimately led to his downfall and he ended up dying from that
