Even when he was tortured and brainwashed by the capital his personality still showed after, when katniss and his squad helped him with his memories he was trusting them and believed what they said about his past He went through so much but came out stronger but still kind hearted and caring!

In District 12, no couple truly feels married until they have a toasting ceremony, where they each place a piece of bread into a fire and feed it to one another. The boy with the bread and the girl on fire literally equals toast lol. Suzanne Collins wrote beautiful imagery and symbolism into Katniss and Peeta's story in so many ways.

I hated that they didn't show in the film how depressed and shell-shocked Katniss was when she and Haymitch went back to the Victor's Village, and how the sight of Peeta and the primroses he was planting for Prim inspired her to finally shower after weeks of sitting, throwing away the rose that Snow left for her so long ago into the fire, and wanting to feel alive again. Anyone who has been depressed can't help but be touched by her launching into motion again. Struck by something so simple and powerful it can only have one name: love. Hits me so hard every time I read it.

It kind of pissed me off how the film (which I think is a fairly decent adaptation overall) sort of brushed off Peeta's kindness in the bread scene. Without knowing the book you have no idea why Katniss is sat outside the bakery looking sad, and Peeta's already burnt the bread, making it feel like a random decision without any reason behind it. Like the whole point is that Peeta deliberately burns the bread, because he sees Katniss first and feels bad for her situation. He actively decides to take a risk and do something incredibly kind and brave, and give her some food, even though he knows he'll get in trouble for it!

@@yashdhariyakumar4229 It has nothing to do with being smart. I saw this film when I was 20. Film language provides a story. This scene wasn't properly introduced or gave the right implication unless you were aware of the book. And even if you are, it doesn't do justice to a scene where we're meant to see Peeta's kindness and compassion (the two attributes that save him in the end). It's rushed over and Peeta is made to look thoughtless and careless, which is not in keeping with his character.

Actually the Latin words for bread are Panis and Panem. Usage of either varies on how you're using it. Peeta's name comes from the Middle eastern "Pita" bread. So kinda factually wrong. But I do like how you've likened his name to survival and nutrition, which is what Katniss needed.

In the first book, when Katniss's family has been starving and Peeta burns the bread, it makes Katniss remember that it is spring and there's tons of dandelions around to make bread with. In the last book, Katniss says, regarding choosing Gale or Peeta, that she needs the "dandelion in the spring ... the reminder that life can go on." This entire series is flush with symbolism. Peeta's strength of character is so strong that not only did he find his way back to himself after the horrific torture he endured but also found his way back to the feeling he had/has for Katniss. His first act after getting back to District Twelve after being released from the care of Dr. Aurelius was to plant Primroses for Katniss. The Capitol couldn't break him. They tried but failed. Even Pres. Coin couldn't, and boy did she want him to. Oh, and she only wanted him over Katniss, because she mistakenly believed Peeta was easily manipulated. Which he wasn't. He was also on board with a rebellion before Katniss was, even mentioning it during the Victory Tour during the party at Pres. Snow's mansion. Yeah, Peeta was not ignorant or blind to the atrocities of the Capitol, but unlike Gale, Peeta didn't give in to the anger and hatred it elicited. Instead, he used it to fuel his kindness and compassion.

I've loved Peeta ever since I first read this trilogy, and he's probably one of my top 3 favorite characters. I was just always so amazed that someone as kind and compassionate as him could exist in a cruel world such as Panem, and I truly believe that his resemblance to Prim was a sign that he would be a bright spot in Katniss's world just as Prim was, as both of them had innocence that became strength and resolve. Seeing him suffer so much pain is heart wrenching, but him fighting his way back is something worth seeing because ou know the worst of the world can't truly take away someone so good. It honestly breaks my heart that the "Peeta vs Gale" nonsense ever happened, because you can tell that a lot of it was people just deciding which actor they found more attractive rather than focusing on them as people, as Peeta got hit with this aspect of it way more than Gale, with people calling him weak and other words that just aren't true. It's one reason why I really feel the books should be read, so people can see Peeta for the man he was meant to be, rather than just a handsome face on the screen.

Katniss wasn’t faking anything in the first games. She just wasn’t ready to address her feelings for Peeta and how strong they were, so when Haymitch offered her the out of it being an act, she clung to it with everything she had. She was the epitome of the ‘push people away because I’m scared of my feelings’ trope. That’s why Peeta almost dying in the Quarter Quell when he hit the force field was such a huge moment for her. She had realized at that point that she cared about Peeta more than most people, but seeing him dead for those few short moments made her realize she’d been in love with him from the start and how much he really meant to her. Gale was just her safety net that she went back to when she was scared because he reminded her of home and her family. She loved Gale but was in love with Peeta. None of it was fake at any point.

Let’s be real, peeta is the true protagonist of this series. It hurts knowing how he feels the whole time, going back and reading katniss’s interpretation of his actions just wanting to shake/hug this poor traumatized girl who can’t imagine kindness being a motivation. When I first read the books I was 11, (not eligible for a reaping) and a 16 year old seemed so much older, now I’m 19 and reading it again and think through the lens of myself at 16 and it just hits different

I read the books for the first time at 9 but I reread at 16 during quarantine. The emotions I felt knowing that these people were meant to be my age. That they were still children. That they didn’t know any other world than suffering. Reading it with a 1 year old baby sister is one thing, but reading it with an 8 year old blonde little sister who is too sweet for her own good is another. I’m thinking of rereading again but I don’t think I can make it through Mockingjay now that my sister is Prim’s age. Prim’s death has always been too much for me, I sobbed my way through the last few chapters.

@@thorragnarok8112 yeah, I love the idea of The Hunger Games as a series. Also, as I'd recently reread the trilogy, I realized there were so many moments that really shouldn't have been cut -- so much of the important stuff were either poorly executed or completely left out, and that's a real shame. So yea, I think The Hunger Games is a book trilogy that would be an excellent source material for a series~

He made me love Peeta even more, personally. I think it’s amazing how good, kind-hearted, and selfless he really was in the books as well tbh. Peeta was my favorite character of the whole hunger games series. I think he is so underated. I do agree that he was a little useless in the Arena , but he was so useful out of it ( like the time he warned Katniss that the Capitol was going to attack disctrict 13). If it wasn't for him and his warning, the people of disctrict 13 would've died in the attack and president Snow would still be there. On top of that you have to think about the life he lived. His mother abused him both physically and verbally, when he was picked for the Hunger games his mother didn't even try to make him feel better ( like i don't know maybe lie to him and tell him you believe in him ?) , he lost his leg and than it was replaced by a fake leg ( it couldn't have been easy to run with it in Catching fire). To top it all, his worst fear became reality when the Capitol kidnapped him, tortured him and transformed him into something he's not... And still, he was able to come back to who he really is , a warm, kind, selfless and gentle person

For someone who didn’t train throughout his life, he did great in both Games. People forget that Katniss literally had years of practice with a weapon and a more athletic life (Although people also forget that Peeta is good at wrestling?? Which means he’s strong at close combat when weapons aren’t involved). It’s not Peeta’s fault his family ran a bakery. Also, physical strength isn’t everything. He’s smart and knew how to manipulate the crowd in their favour. Without that, Katniss’ physical strength wouldn’t have been enough. So in no way was he useless in the arena 🙄.

The movies really twist this into a much bigger love triangle than it actually was. They leave out a lot of the details that make you realize how much she love Peeta, while also failing to mention how while she does love Gale in a way they don't usually see eye to eye or agree on most things. That being said I think the movies did a pretty good job all things considered. Especially since they had to cut so much due to time.

I disagree with everyone constantly saying Peeta loved Katniss in the beginning. He didn't know her. He respected and crushed on and idealized vision of her, but he couldn't have really loved her. He was right when he finally realized that he put too much pressure on her and that they needed to get to know each other first. Katniss was smart enough to realize, at the time, that she knew Gale and Gale knew her. She never let Peeta in. I think that this was one of the few YA books that made that distinction and I was happy at the end of the first book when she didn't fool herself that she was in love with Peeta. But, I also appreciated how they gradually fell in love as they both changed, grew and got to know themselves and each other.

Ironic that the Capitol tried so hard to destroy Katniss through hurting Peeta and by Peeta hurting her… but they underestimated the strength and the depth of the love these two held for each other. I think it’s beautiful that in such a cruel tragic world it was selfless love between two poor kids that helped shape a brighter future for all other kids. His giving her the bread long ago symbolized that he was the nurturer that both Katniss and their peaceful future needed. I’m so glad he got the happy ending he deserved, because so often the good pure characters are the ones that are tragically sacrificed-like Prim, Rue, and Finnick. As horribly sad as I am about their deaths, I feel above all else Peeta **had** to survive or the storytelling would have been a failure. He’s a wonderful, layered, and very human character-thank you for this video!

I will say in reading the books Katniss mentions the warm and comfort feeling that Peeta gave her a couple times in the cave. And goes on to eventually say she didn’t feel that with Gale. She was faking to stay alive at times but there were genuine moments in the cave where she was falling for the boy with the bread🥺💖 Edit: Gale making the bombs that killed Prim among other innocents with their snare techniques also was a huge factor in her never wanting to be near him again.
