    I feel like Prim's death symbolizes that the story is so much bigger than just her. While in so many ways, she is the reason for the direction the story went, there was still so many more lives at stake. Because of her, Katniss made the decisions she made and even had to continue doing so after Prim's death. While she wasn't there physically anymore, her spirt and all that Kat stood for will always be there. She was a martyr for sure.

    One of the things I love about The Hunger Games is that, Snow says in his eulogy to Katniss when he believed her dead: "[Katniss was] a poor, unstable girl with a small talent with a bow and arrow. Not a great thinker, not the mastermind of the rebellion, merely a face plucked from the rabble because [she] had caught the nation's attention with [her] antics in the Games." Everything he says is true... Katniss is no way The Chosen One (TM). She doesn't have some special gift: she is not Harry Potter destined to kill Voldemort; she is not Moses; she's not Ender Wiggin born to kill the Buggers; she's not the Dragon Warrior; she's not the key to a virus by running through mazes; she's not Arthur Pendragon, etc. The Mockingjar symbol came from her friend, Madge; her fire and style came from her stylist, Cinna; her desirability and likability came from Peeta; her tragedy came from Prim; her strategy came from Haymitch, etc. What Katniss brought to the table was her spirit. She sparked the war, yes, but the war wasn't _about_ her.

    I also like that Rue is compared to Prim in such a way that Rue was and is as important to Katniss as Prim was to her. “Rue. Primrose. None of them can tip the scale at seventy pounds soaking wet.” In other words, prim shaped the way that katniss interacted with the world, and in seeing rue, who reminded katniss of her little sister, she started a revolution. One meant to bring peace and love, becuase katniss dared to love and take care of her sister

    Suzanne collins isn’t afraid to kill off many people’s favourite characters in both her bestselling novels. Prim and finnick in the hunger games and Ares and Hamnet in the underland chronicles. But out of all these deaths prims was easily the most devastating to me. her development from a scared little girl to a frontlines medic for the resistance was an amazing thing to both read and watch; just for it to be cut short by bombs dropped by people she trusted as ally’s.

    I feel like the theory she was set up to be chosen was planned is right but after Katniss won the plans had to be changed. Basically Prim was meant to be the Mockingjay, avenging the death of her sister who volunteered in her place. She was younger and less rebellious as well as would have been a great face on the front lines for the cameras. Either way, a sister was going to be sacrificed to perpetuate the rise of district 13.

    Prim, in my opinion, represents the oppressed people (both citizens and hunger games participants) and how many of them are sacrificed jsut for a system to work. Her physical absence in the film profoundly symbolizes how many of us easily forget and take for granted that so many people had to die along the process of this sadistic world. That these very same people are capable of character growth and development, but had to all die to make a point that the system does not work anymore. Prim doesn't have to always be in the film, just as all the people who died in the games didn't have to always be mentioned, but they are there. They are part of the bigger picture. Prim is you. You who's worth protecting.

    I think we can all agree that, as vile as Snow is, Alma Coin was far worse. Like Snow himself said- he's not above killing children, but he's never taken life without "reason". Katniss singlehandedly saved Panem from an even worse monster than Snow.

  • @CaptainPikeachu

    @CaptainPikeachu

    This implies that Coin took lives without reason though? Which is not true. Sure maybe she wasn’t specifically targeting Prim but let’s remember that the bombing was done so that it would turn the Capitol against Snow and it worked. So Coin is simply exactly like Snow. She too was willing to kill for a reason.

  • @LilacSreya

    @LilacSreya

    Not exactly fair to just write off Coin as worse since we don’t see much. Her reign ended before it began. Who’s to say she would have been worse? Are we gonna put all blame on her and ignore the rest of the citizens? This plot isn’t unrealistic, but these kind of things give a wrong impression to rebellions against tyranny. :/

    Does anyone think toward the end as Katniss and Gale are headed to the capital, when Gale gets snatched by Peacekeepers and Katniss is free to keep going, that maybe those peacekeepers were district 13 people dressed in the uniforms (ordered by Coin) to grab Gale and keep him safe while hoping Katniss would get killed in the district 13 bombing of the capital that killed Prim

    That’s an interesting theory. He seems to have gotten away relatively unscathed from what we know since we see him apologizing to Katniss later. Though I think she was in intensive care for a long time (I know at least in the books she had very extensive burns all over her body; probably had to tone it down in the movie to maintain the PG-13 rating) so if he did have any injuries he probably would have long since recovered from them by that point. 🤔

    I see a lot of Prim in myself. I grew up in tough times, being the youngest of 3 of a single mother. I'm also an avid animal lover. I have 2 cats of 21 years old and got them when I was in 2nd grade and now almost 28. I always tell people I would feed my cats before I feed myself, even if that means going without eating for a couple of days like my own mother did with me and my 2 sisters! Keep up the great work, and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos!

And all my family and I who had read all 3 books already... could only just hold our breaths because we all knew that Prim died... and boy was Mom mad when we didn't tell her that Prim died and she had to find that out the hard way.

    I always felt that Prim's death symbolized that in war even when you win you lose because of the price you have to pay. Everyone paid a price to win the war. Peeta lost his family, Gale lost Katniss, Mrs. Everdeen lost both her daughters and Katniss lost her sister. If you ask me Mrs. Everdeen got it the worst. At least Peeta and Katniss have each other and had kids. Gale most likely got married too but Mrs. Everdeen ended up alone all because Katniss couldn't forgive her for losing it when the father died. Oh and Haymitch but I think he still got it better than Mrs. Everdeen. I'd like to think he felt some comfort living next to Katniss and Peeta.

    You should have put in more about Coin. The movies left out how complicit she was in Prim's death, and so did this video. In the books, she proved time and again that she had to be in absolute control. Well, absolute power corrupts absolutely. She couldn't control Katniss, so she took away the only one Katniss cared about. I don't like that Gale is being called a villain here. He's just a boy who found a talent for weapons and traps, something to be used against an enemy. It was Coin that ordered the attack, and then put Prim in the path of those bombs just to get back at Katniss for not being her good little public slave. When a person is shot, you blame the person who pulled the trigger, not the manufacturer of the gun or the bullets. You said this was going to be about the books, but it only was until the end. Then you followed the movie.

    The story of Prim is sort of complicated. Her character is played by one of the most beautiful actresses. It makes her role and..eventual demise, so damn heartbreaking.

    I wish Suzanne Collins had just left Prim SERIOUSLY injured, like in a coma that they didn't know if she was going to wake up in, so katniss would still have a reason to kill coin, but Prim didn't deserve to die.

  • @Amatureb

    yea that would be cool. I expect that the poorest parts of districts one and two probably have about the same amount as the richest parts in twelve (except the victors in 12)

    I can't believe I share a birthday with Prim. The more you know One of the things I noticed while rereading was the symbolism of Lady and Buttercup, as foreshadowing for Prim's death. Katniss describes Buttercup as a useful creature, and considered it deserving, while thinking of Buttercup as kind of a waste of resources that was only worth it becuase Prim liked him. In close to the same breath, she volunteers to the games to save her sister from them. Later on, Lady dies in the bombing of 12th, and Buttercup somehow survives. Buttercup is used as enterntainment and hope for those in the bunker with the game with the lights. Katniss becomes entettainment and hope through being the mockingjay, and Prim dies in a bombing. And after all that, both Katniss and Buttercup survive and go back to 12th to lick their wounds and heal somehow
