The Last of Us Episode 5 is the Hardhome of GoT

Фильм және анимация

A review/analysis of The Last of Us episode 5 in which I dive into the big action set piece with the bloater and the tragic ending with Henry and Sam. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States.

I love the little detail of Ellie falling asleep knowing Sam is infected, like a part of her actually believed she could heal him with her blood. It's little moments like this that reinforce that she is still just a kid. So many shows these days forget to write kid characters like kids so its pretty refreshing to see how childlike and still full of hope Ellie is only for that hope to be ripped from her with the deaths of Sam and Henry. Really helps sell the tragedy of her character.

I actually felt that Kathleen's elementary school teacher vibes had the effect of making her even more unnerving than if she had been some rough and gruff character. I think this was done intentionally to show that this world can turn even seemingly nice innocent people into monsters.

THIS! On EP 4 I thought her character's lack of intimidation made the scenes a bit awkward because of her soccer mom/elementary teacher vibes, but after EP 5, I liked this way better. Because damn... This woman could be that type of school teacher that we don't fear, but we rather get annoyed at, but their world has become so messed up that even someone as simple as her is willing to do horrible things. One difference I noticed is when Henry kills himself. The game focuses on Joel's reaction, while in the show it focuses on Ellie. In the game Joel sees what happens to Henry after losing Sam, and is horrified by it. Scared that if he keeps going on this journey with Ellie, that if he loses her he might go down the same path. This referenced in the chapter with Tommy when Ellie says that Joel shouldn't worry since she can't get infected. By focusing on Ellie's reaction in the show and having her trying to save Sam, it helps add weight to Ellie's sense of survivors guilt at the end of the story. Although Ellie was born into this world, there are horrors that she hasn't seen.

One of the biggest W of this episode to me was how they effortlessly combined different levels and fights from the game into one giant set piece to make it super epic. First they merged the escape from the city with the sewer level while holding off on the enemy encounters. Then at the sniper's ambush location, instead of throwin the hunters at you and then the infected, they let both out together making for a huge climatic fight. It really fits better with the pace of a TV show, but also keeps at least something from every level. Also, really enjoyed the deeper characterisation for Henry. Episode 3 was amazing for me, but this one is right up there.

5:53 I noticed this too, I don't think it was on purpose but her constant cadence and tone of Soccer Mom/Kindergarten Teacher throughout was very funny. I think she was an essential part of this story and a very emotionally charged character, overall wonderful to follow, but at the same time she might be the weakest part

It was definitely intentional. In the real world, she'd be a classic "bit of a Karen" type who's condescending and a bit controlling. Once the apocalypse happens, any regular person could be pushed to extreme lengths as she does and the show is portraying this very well. We learn that her brother was the real leader, and she kinda inherited the role, so she's not a typical leader or inspiring person. She's a bit whiny and annoying by design. She struck me as being like those MAGA types who point pistols at protestors. She talks to the prisoners like naughty children because that's the only experience she probably has pre-infection of berating "naughty" people. It felt very natural and realistic to me. Not everyone in the apocalypse will be a strong badass or maniacal villain.

I think the way Kathleen acts is scary, she doesn't need to be more intimidating because she already is, her treating prisoners like children who've done something wrong belittles them, only to then kill them after treating them like children, shows that she really doesn't care who you are, cross her you die, and if you happen to be a kid related to someone who crossed her, she'll kill you too

***POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR GAME AND SHOW*** One neat detail about Ellie trying to heal Sam is that in the game, there's a conversation between Joel and Ellie where she wonders if she only has to cut her hand open and give a bit of her blood. Instead of lifting this conversation from the game, the series shows you why that won't be enough.

Yeah that's a leagacy think that still happens in all "zombie" media these days. The OG Romero zombie was undead, the dead being reanimated, looking for brains. In the early 2000s with the revival by the Snyder's DotD remake and 28 days later (among others), zombies became "infected", humans infected with a virus (or fungus) where they are still alive just transformed into a monster. Unfortunately the legacy concept still gets conflated by folks.

I agree. I think the changes they have made overall (like episode 3) were smart choices as the majority of the game is sneaking and fighting people and infected, and the show in general would lose it's impact with encounters with infected and human enemies, lose tension when they have to sneak around, and generally be more monotonous if they followed the game too closely. They are being smart with the change of mediums for the story.

To Supercuts, Excellent analysis on your part that is something I have never thought of before that "Hardhome" is roughly the equivalent of a zombie apocalypse scenario where the stakes of human extinction are made clear. To give you a couple of notes I have a guess Miss Lynsky's performance might have the mannerisms it did because writers gave her notes from things like the GE or Stanford experiments where researchers found even mid level, previously non violent supervisors in things like the finance or food service industry had what it took to be interrogators, concentration camp guards or run death squads when push cam to shove. In my old job we actually called that the "zombies get you first boss". So I think you picked up on something very important. Second, historically collaborator is one of the broadest brushes in human conflict. Her line of trading info for "apples", is reminiscent of the Vietnam war. American troops would trade opened ration cans (you broke the seal to make sure they wouldn't be stored to hand off to insurgents at a later date) to parents who were happy to get something with vitamins in it for their kids. (Platoon Leader, Robert Young) Patrols would later find these parents executed as "informers". Even in a brutal Fedra occupation there are going to be some girlfriends or charity cases who get caught in the middle. Not trying be a know it all, just appreciate your intelligence and wanted to share in kind. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions and have a great day. JT

Love how Kathleen's and Henry's characters introduced a more deep insight of how people after the apocalypse don't have any distinctions between what's really good or really evil. Like we see that a little on ep4 when Joel admits to doing the same raiding thing to Ellie, but I feel like when Henry admits that he handed over Kathleen's brother to FEDRA that's when I was really confused for a bit as to who's the more evil person, but then soon figured that it's no use deciding who's evil or not when you're trying to survive. You just gotta be selfish. Total 180 comparison to Bill and Frank. Great episode.

That healing scene does one more thing: It expresses Ellie's Will to be the cure. In the game we learn that she wants a purpose in life and that is her saving other through being the cure. In the show we have not really seen that, so the healing attempt was a good way of showing her intentions.

the shot at the end of Ellie walking away while Joel stands at the grave was also a callback that totally mirrors the end of Tess's death episode (ep 2), when the episode cuts as Joel had already started walking away and Ellie just stood there. I still sometimes can't believe they've pulled this off as well as they have, given the history of game adaptations. Just a bit anxious about season 2.

I disagree on your final assessment. I don't think Ellie is moving on from this at all, I believe that given the events with Sam she feels extremely guilty for being immune. She want to get to Wyoming as quick as possible to find a cure. I think the events of her initial infection ( the last of us DLC), Tess, Sam and Henry are culminating in to very deep survivors guilt.

The headcannon for me is that he was trying to disable the engine and hopefully block the road before finally realizing he would have to kill again and making the shot. The evidence for me was that several shots were in the center grill where he didn't necessarily know it was armored with a plow. To me it makes sense since he didn't want to kill the sniper and would probably assume the driver could be in a similar position and that disabling the vehicle would let them escape with minimal deaths.

I love how they portrayed Kathlyn, she’s a character who was never like this before but revenge struck deep to change her and cause her to change more harshly with every little move she makes next. She presents this casual malice, a motherly figure, for a misguided by free group of people and a cruel teacher above the rest. But she’s not in this for her group anymore, she’s in it for revenge, not her brothers legacy but for his downfall being avenged and it causes her entire group to fall. That entire resistance is dead

As an active reservee, I could guess that Joel had to shoot a few warm up shots, not for the barrel as it was already worked by the old guy, but for himself. He also adjusts the scope sight when the gang is cornered, so I see why he could start hitting. Plus Ellie was in danger, showing him focus more to protect her.

I completely agree, but she was also in danger when the truck was barreling down on her. But that part also had me a bit miffed that they did the movie thing where the character inexplicably doesn't get out of harms way (they keep running down the street in front of the truck instead of immediately running off to the side, into the houses where the truck couldn't follow). I get that it's a movie contrivance for the sake of tension and action, but it's more jarring than Joel miss/hit thing anyway.
