The Last of Us Episode 4 is Slow BUT Still Great

Фильм және анимация

A review/analysis of episode 4 of The Last of Us taking a look at why it's still a great episode despite it being slow. This episode is not comprised of filler lol. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States.

I'm not saying she was perfect, obviously there were some flaws with her as a leader but I think it is well nuanced. Someone we're supposed to root against but still understand.

I disagree with this episode being great the action and brutality of the game wasn't present in this episode also the pacing for the shortest episode is slowest it felt like half of an episode to me or they could of cut the first 10 minutes. I get the show is about these two but I want more action and the fact that most of the fans are ok with the most important thing to happen in this episode is them entering a city and Joel laughing. Most boring episode of the show thus far and the lack of visceral violence is the most obvious in this episode. If that's what you want fine but too pretend this is the quality of the previous episode is delusional

Kathleen seems very realistic, in our current world it seems the people who simply have the drive to lead... get to where they're going. It doesn't matter how cool you look, it's more about the drive to lead and the willingness to never give up. They could have had another actress with a visually appealing look, but I think in this new world folks just don't have their top priority being cool looking. The more real you seem the more people will follow you because they can relate to you. The stakes of being a leader in this story doesn't come with benefits, you either do it or not and if you fail people die. So that kinda empties the plate of folks who just want to *try* being a leader and replaces them with people who will do what is absolutely in their own interest. I like that she's not cool, not striking in appearance and just a person who simply has the will.

On Kathleen - you might have missed the point. In the podcast, the writers said that the uneasiness we feel towards her and her lack of badassery and confidence is the point, as she's not supposed to be this badass hardcore leader. Her followers might also already question her legitimacy and choices, as Jeffrey does in this episode. We are so used to the archetype of the badass manly confident leader that nobody questiones in media that most people fail to see what they were doing with her in this episode.

We already know that her overlooking the infected threat in the building is going to lead to a lot of people dying unnecessarily so I think they are setting her up to fail as a leader. Killing the doctor is also another objectively bad & selfish decision. There are already enough strong female characters on this show with Tess, Marlene and Ellie that I don't think the writers would hesitate portraying a woman in charge who is out of her depth which is the sort of thing that would typically enlist backlash in today's world. 🙄

The story is about the human condition. Particularly how to cope in an a chaotic environment. Joel goes from a jubilant loving father, to a hardened survivor who doesn’t allow himself to open up, to love, or care for people, knowing the pain of loss. The story shows how he grows with Ellie. They both have great character arcs in the story. The ending is perfect as well. This is why episode 3 was so great. It acted as a microcosm for the development of Ellie and joel.

[EDIT: HEAVY SPOILERS] I personally thought the cast choice for Kathleen was perfection. Kathleen is not someone who ever thought she would be in power. She tells us the story of how her brother would comfort her in their bedroom when there was a storm thundering outside. She is used to being #2, never "top dog" but his right hand woman, whom he protects. She only stepped into this leadership role 2 weeks ago because of the unexpected murder of her brother. It forced her to assume leadership. So to me, this character is brought to life by the nuances that Melanie Lynskey portrayed. Once I understood more about Kathleen and put myself in her shoes as the second-in-command forced now to be the leader, the acting choices made a lot more sense to me. Those criticizing her as "not bold, commanding, or decisive enough" are not realizing that all of those things are true of Kathleen, but that's exactly the point. That's why she's extra terrifying. She doesn't have the wisdom, expertise, or demeanor of a leader and yet, well, here she is now having to be the leader.

I think people are judging Kathleen's character too early. We'll see how they deliver, but Craig and Neil explicitly say in the podcast with Troy Baker that you're supposed to wonder why the guy who looks military trained is listening to an awkward, intimidating character like Kathleen. My guess is she's pivotal to motivating the city to overtake FEDRA and she has the people's support, even if she doesn't herself give off hardened survivor vibes. I mean, we catch her character in a moment when they're caught off guard. They're trying to get rid of the "collaborators" and Joel and Ellie just killed a group of people who were involved in their usually pretty reliable trap. And it's not like the hunters in the game were portrayed as this super disciplined group like the WLF or something. They're a loose collection of normal people who just got fed up with FEDRA.

Episode 3 was filler and pointless. It was a backstory for a character that died in the same episode. Joel and Ellie could have found a truck with supplies in it or just found Bill's house at the end of episode 2 and #3 could have been skipped. Honestly, if you didn't watch #3 you wouldn't even know it was gone. You would wonder where they got the truck and supplies but you would have assumed they found it.

I think that was the point of Kathleen's character, she is not the architype villain. Obviously, seems confusing at first but she illustrates that everyone can change when they are put through a traumatic situation. I think her development over the next ep or two made her even more chilling because you realize her motivation and the circumstances on how they got here.

The first two episodes established backstory and the corducept, and the third episode gave a side story that ties thematically into the main game. I think it makes a lot of sense that Perry, the army guy, would not a be the leader. He is someone who is clearly more used to taking orders then being the one giving them. He has the military experience yes, but that experience has made him someone who follows what he superiors says. In a way it does make sense that a Karen-type would be charge because if you think about who those kinds of people are, they are very good at getting what they want, very good being manipulative, very good at forcing/making listen people to them and they tend to get their way. If you think about these two types of personalities it makes a lot of sense for them end up in the positions that they do.

I think Kathleen was meant to feel weird in the leader roll because we find out that the only reason she was leader and people followed her was because of how well respected and good of a leader her brother was. I also didn't get the impression that people really beleived her manipulation, they more just went along with it. I think people are still holding onto the legacy of her brother and dont want to face the reality that his sister isnt him. Her anger at her brothers death also drove them to actually overthrow fedra but her anger is all she really has going for her as a leader. No one really knows how to turn a revolution into a functioning society.

  • @leanna9290
    @leanna9290 Жыл бұрын

I think Kathleen being a PTA soccer mom is the point. The podcast talked about humanizing villains, and this group becoming just a bad as FEDRA after they overthrew them. I think FEDRA killed Kathleen’s brother, she riled up this group, and then suddenly everyone is looking to her as the leader of this revolution that is quickly becoming a violent oppressive group, and Kathleen didn’t sign up for that, isn’t equipped for it, and is just trying to live up to what everyone is expecting of her. Shes not threatening because you don’t threaten people to join a revolution, you inspire them. Y’all can’t use two brain cells to realize the “mis-cast” of the character IS THE GODDAMN POINT

And it delivered on so many fun moments. I admit I also had that thought about Kathleen though. She's not fearsome so I figured she must somehow have a huge amount of respect from her men. Yeah, the only thing I didn't love about the episode was Kathleen. She absolutely did not give ruthless machiavelian leader. The most obvious reason is her voice. It's so light and sweet. It feels more like she's struggling to have people take her seriously instead of effortlessly commanding respect, unlike, say, Marlene. So, seeing all these people eagerly following her orders felt off.

The third guy busting in and nearly killing Joel was not a surprise to me, there were 3 guys, one faking being hurt, one on a fire escape who dropped a cinder block on the car, and the final guy with the gun who forced Joel to turn. Joel was in a gun fight with the two who were on the ground and killed them, but the third hadn't shown up yet, and Chekov's gun wouldn't allow for that third guy to just turn tail and run, he had to show up again.

It's been confirmed by Neil Druckman that she was designed in a way where we would question why people followed her. So, she'll either be overthrown, or we'll figure out the real reason why she's being followed. If it's the latter, then whatever the reason is, it's probably really fucked. The annoying thing is, everyone just assumed that it was bad writing and not an intentional creative decision, so a lot of people are hating on the actress, the character, and Neil without any proper context.
